Clouds and Raindrops
Roaring clouds across the sky,
Tell us that the rain is here.
Rising from the ocean coast,
Clouds are filled with drops of rain.
And at last when it rains,
Clouds make the earth,
Spread its fragrance everywhere,
When it meets with the drops of rain!
To join with the ocean again!

When I see the dark clouds,
I am sure this is a rainy day.
The day that rainbow comes,
With seven colours in it.
And I will be scared,
Of the thunder and lightning!
I make a paper boat
And float it in rainwater.
I drink hot coffee.
And eat French fries.

Oh! The rainy season has come. It’s raining heavily,
Rain makes us happy. Raining everywhere.
The dry lands get wet, Raining on the playground,
And these lands turn green, On streets and on the trees.
In the fresh morning birds sing,
And happy are the frogs too. The clouds are black,
Meadows are full of raindrops, Birds are in their nests,
The peacock dances in rain. The wind is blowing heavily
And when the rain stops, And birds are making sounds.
In the blue and clear sky, The rain is falling on the rooftops,
I could see a rainbow, Trees are waving in the wind.
That makes everyone happy. And when the rain stops,
The beautiful rainbow is seen!

The Diamond Ring
(The marriage of two celestial bodies)
The gently smiling silvery Moon,
In her white silky bridal gown,
Is moving alone to reach soon,
Near the Sun, her bridegroom.
He, the sparkling, rising Sun,
Extending all his thousand hands,
Is waiting there for his lovely lass,
To receive her today as his bride.
With light and slow steps she moves,
Towards him who is blazing bright,
Mounting the golden steps of clouds,
To give us all that amazing sight!
And when they reach face to face,
There in heaven the angels sing,
Embracing her with all his love,
He puts on her finger, the diamond ring!
Then though eager but with patience,
Staring through their dark glasses,
Wondered the anxious eyes on the Earth,
Ah! The gorgeous Solar Eclipse.

My Friend
My friend, whom I never can buy,
From anywhere and who never will say bye,
To me you are always new,
Each time about you the more I knew.

We are one in my heart and in your mind too.
I remember the tales together we’ve read,
Those spring flowers we plucked that were in red,
The games that we played and those we’ve won,
With the feeling that we are one.
Oh my friend, in your eyes I can see,
The gift of God’s love as deep as the sea.
A real asset that no one can steal,
A bond that is strong as that of the steel.
Oh dear! You are the gift from that heavenly altar,
My love to you, I’m sure will never ever alter.
Those stories of our friendship that now here I write,
From my heart I can say, are always true and right!

An elephant with a humble hearthere is a famous temple in Kerala named Guruvayoor. One day people
decided to lay a wooden pillar to host the festival flag. There was a deep pit
Twith small radius and it was the same size of the wooden pillar to fit exactly
in it. At the time to lay the wooden pillar the elephant came there with the huge pillar
on his trunk. The rituals started, Everybody started chanting. The master commanded
the elephant to put the pillar into the pit. The elephant moved forward and suddenly
stopped. Everybody surprised. His master forced him. But no use. Everybody was
confused. After some time people heard a weak meow – meow sound and they all were
surprised that there was a small kitten in the pit. Suddenly the elephant put the log
down and rescued the cat from the deep pit with his long trunk. And thereafter picked
the wooden pillar, placed it into the pit. Everybody appreciated the greatness of the
elephant and treated him with food as compliment and the name of the elephant was
Guruvayoor Keshavan.

Role of a Mother
As we celebrate mother’s day on 12th
May I would like to write a short
piece about the important role of a
mother in our life. We all are familiar
with the saying “Mother is the light
of the home”. The important thing is
that a mother loves her children
deeply. A mother’s role is to love her
children with all her heart. One of the
most meaningful roles that a mother plays is the role of a nurse. It
is also the role of every mom to understand her children. When a
child feels this he/she learns to trust the parent better. Mothers are
trusted by God, because souls are entrusted in their care.

Pleasures And Duties of a Student’s Life
Radha G
[Department of Social Science]
student life is a period of preparation-preparation for all the struggles
that he has to face as an individual and community. It is the period
when a man acquires knowledge and equips himself with those
qualities which may Student life is a life of discipline, pleasure and joy. Discipline
demands a good deal tolerance and sacrifice. A student
without a sense of discipline is like a ship without a rubber.
Regarding pleasure and joy, to many students –
life is the period “When everything appears appareled in
celestial life. “The student feels that life is all happiness, and
he leads a life of idealism. There are also the pleasures of
companionship with comrades, of sharing the affection of the
teachers, of participating in sports, excursion etc. It is for this
reason that every person always retains a fond memory of the
happy and carefree days of his student’s life and longs to live
them over again .Student has his duties and responsibilities
too. Duties which he owes to his own self to his parents and
elders, to the society in which he lives, to his country, to the wide world and above
all to his Maker.
The foremost duty of a student is to study with undivided attention and
by hard diligence that he can acquire the knowledge necessary to achieve success
in life. His duties to his parents and elders consist in rendering obedience to them
and treating them with respect which is their due. His duty to society requires him
to render some kind of social service. He should develop a broader outlook and
behave as if he were the member of the great family, a worthy citizen of the world.
Lastly in regard to his duty to his Maker, the simplest way to serve Him has been
indicated by Milton when he said “They also serve who only stand and wait.” If
a student cultivates this attitude of readiness to serve God, that is enough for him.
To conclude, opportunities once lost in this period of life may not come
back again. It is therefore the bounden duty of student not to fitter away his
youthful energies in idle pursuits. He should strive for self-development as much
through the restraint enjoyment of the pleasures as through the disciplined
performance of the duties of student life.
Always remember the famous quote “There is a learning time in youth which
suffered to escape and no foundation laid, returns.”
Prize Winning Essay
Interdisciplinarity – The Need of The Time
(Conducted by Vidyodaya Institute of Education & Management)
Gayathri Devi [Department of English]
A fascinating team for educationalist and passionate teachers –
interdisciplinarity aims at
integration of various branches
of knowledge for a more
efficacious learning experience. The team is
self-explanatory and is about crossing the
traditional frontiers of academic disciplines
which happened as the sequel of the new needs
and demands in the field of education.
Researchers, teachers, students and scholars
find interdisciplinary approach a fruitful one as
it connects and integrates several academic
schools of thought professions, technologies
etc. and provide them with better results in the
field of their study.
Piaget, the eminent psychologist defines
disciplinary field as “a specific body of
teachable knowledge with its own background
of education, training, procedures, methods
and content area.” Therefore interdisciplinary
field is the amalgamation of various
departmentalized disciplinary fields. It helps
us to make a different perspective of the topic
of study.
Historical Overview
Interdisciplinarity is generally believed to be a twentieth century coinage.
However the concept seems to be resonant in Greek philosophy and drama.
Ancient Greek philosophers like Plato and Aristotle and dramatists like
Sophocles and Euripides did not compartmentalize their subject of study.
Instead they viewed them as a whole entity drawing inspiration and elements
from other realms of knowledge.
The progress of human knowledge has sowed seeds of plethora of sciences
which have grown into huge trees each branching itself into remarkable degree
if specialization as a result of research and practice. It is very evident that each
branch of knowledge is inter related to the other, the study of one alone makes
it incomplete. Thus twentieth century educationalist and psychologists have
chosen interdisciplinary approach as a better method of teaching and learning
than the conventional disciplinary approach.
Significance of Interdisciplinarity in Education
In academic discourse, interdisciplinarity typically applies to four realms,
via knowledge, research, education and theory. In all these domains self-
contained, isolated expertise will not provide a desired result. A paradigm shift
from focusing on specialized segments to a sense of wholeness of form and
function should emerge. This will subsequently function as a unified whole to
provide a coherent view of the subject.
In educational setting interdisciplinary programmes facilitate the study of
subject which have some coherence, but which cannot be adequately
understood from a single disciplinary perspective. For instance, disciplines like
anthropology and sociology are at time intertwined. Sociology cannot stay
aloof from technology as technology changes society. Nano technology, the
most discussed and demanded branch of science is an amalgamation of
Quantum physics, computer science and bioinformatics which itself is a
combination of molecular biology with computer science.
The aim of education should be the unification of knowledge that is spread
in different branches of knowledge. It is quite
evident that no subject can be taught in isolation.
Physics cannot be taught in isolation with
mathematics. Politics cannot be studied alone
without the knowledge of history. Interdisciplinary
approach is thus a technique or tool that
established reciprocal relationship for better
understanding of the subject. The correlation of
different subjects should be identified and utilized for a better learning
experience. This ultimately provides practical shape to knowledge of various
subjects.
The Indian Education Commission, popularly known as Kothari
Commission in its recommendation in 1996 specified that the interdisciplinary
approach should be dealt with departments having close relationships. For the
successful implementation, the commission established educational
departments in 4 or 5 universities with the help of UGC which would ensure
research developments in interdisciplinary approach and organize summer
training to encourage it. It is quite unfortunate that, 51 years hence we have
not made any remarkable change from the traditional academia, while the
developed countries of the world have changed their perspective. Since 1998
there has been an ascendency in the value of interdisciplinary research and
teaching in the U. S. According to the data provided by the National Center of
Education Statistics (NCES) there is a remarkable hike in the number of
bachelor’s degrees awarded annually from 1973 to 2005.In addition to it ,
educational leaders across the world have advocated for interdisciplinary
rather than disciplinary approaches to problem solving in 21st century.
It is high time that we change from the narrow , fragmented pattern to a
broader , unified sense, for interdisciplinarity will result in fostering creativity,
solving many intellectual , social and practical problems, making contribution
to the new area of study, detecting errors made by experts who follow single
discipline , flexibility in research and bridging fragmented disciplines and
providing academic freedom.
Implementation of Interdisciplinary Approach
For a successful implementation the number of disciplines involved, the
‘distance’ between them, the novelty of any particular combination and their
extent of integrations have to be studied in detail. Changes should be brought
in curriculum construction, syllabus, learning materials and teaching
procedure adopted.
At grass root level the teachers should identify the disciplines to be
combined and adopt methodology of teaching in such a way that the students
would get a novel learning experience helping them to view things as a unified
whole. Teachers should be given regular in service training to help them update
their knowledge.
Conclusion
To quote John Dewey, the exponent of pragmatism, “Education is not
preparation for life; education is life itself. “Life is so complex. Education too
becomes hardly an easy affair. Thus it needs an eclectic approach to facilitate
the actual process of learning. Triggering off interdisciplinary and making a
paradigm shift from the traditional academia is indeed the need of the hour.
