Community Introduction
! Here at King, we think that we don’t have to be similar
to be compatible. We all have our own ideas and
personalities that make the community unique. One thing
that makes us different is how we come from many different
places. In this book you will learn about where people come
from, the many languages we speak, all of our own traditions
and how we make our community a kind and welcoming
place! During our expedition, we worked together to get
everybody to the top of Bradbury Mountain and worked on
many team building activities. We also went downtown and
surveyed many people on the streets to compare their ideas
about community with our own. After reading the answers
people gave us, we decided community is a group of people
living in a particular area or place, helping each other out,
and I think King has a wonderful, unique community.
Stewardship
Imagine you’re riding down your
street on your way to school. What
do you smell? What do you feel?
You might be inhaling the clean
fresh air around you or you could be
smelling the foul, funky stink of the
polluted atmosphere.There are
simple ways you can keep the Earth
clean and healthy!That quick bike
ride is an amazing deed to the
environment. Since it takes gas to
drive a car, (which sends carbon
dioxide into the sky, polluting the
earth), riding your bike or walking
are the perfect substitutes.You
don’t need to have much money, all
you need is a kind heart and a bit of
time. Just imagine if everybody in
Portland got a little exercise
everyday!That’s about 66,000
people, daily, carrying out one small
action to a better, fresher Earth.

Shipping goods using the railroads
allowed communities to grow quickly. To
construct the buildings needed for homes
and businesses, lumber was brought in
along the railroads. As companies started
building more with steel, the railroads
were needed to haul the heavy material.
People used the railroad to get to the city
nearest to where their new home would
be located. Over time, the amount of
railroads in the country made it possible
for people to settle almost anywhere.
One of the oldest railroads in the United
States runs through our city, and a former
rail yard called Union Station is right
around the corner from King Middle
School. One of the landmarks that I’ll
always remember about my community is
the railroad trestle over Park Street.

Languages Hello!
Ciao!
There are multiple languages
around Portland. You might go up
to somebody and say “Hi” and they
might say hi back in Chinese,
French, Spanish, or something else.
If that happened to me, I would be
pleased knowing there are all kinds
of people from other countries and
cultures here. A visitor to our
school said people who speak
different ways can help spread that
language. I appreciate people who
speak ways that are unique to the
American people. Languages make
a better community when people
communicate around town in a
variety of ways. King is already a
school that is enriched with all
kinds of languages. The amount of
languages we speak in King are 30!
Wow! That is a lot for one school!
What languages do you bring
to your school?
Language Data
This graphic shows what English:67 French:7 Somali:7 Arabic:5
different languages people in
York 6 speak at home. In my Spanish:3 Bangla:1 Kinyarwanda:1 Lingala:1
graphic, 67 people speak Acholi:1 Farsi:1 Swahili:1 Afrikkans:1
English, 7 speak French, 7 speak
Somali, 5 speak Arabic, 2 speak Kirundi:2 Portuguese:2
Portuguese, 3 speak Spanish, the
rest speak other languages like
Bangla, Kinyarwanda, Lingala,
and Kirundi. Just like most
people, my native language is
English, but currently, I am
learning Spanish. I think that
everyone should learn at least
one language that is different
from there native language, even
if it is sign language. I think that
this graphic is accurate because
we want to know what York 6
kids usually speak in their
homes.
Traditions
Holiday food is an important
tradition for many people.
Thanksgiving is a holiday that has
food as a tradition. At
Thanksgiving, many people like to
eat turkey, gravy, green beans,
cranberry sauce and mashed
potatoes. Many traditional foods
of Thanksgiving are from North
and South America. Thanksgiving
dinner is a harvest feast that began
with the pilgrims in 1621. I eat the
traditional Thanksgiving foods
with my family every year. In
conclusion, a tradition for many
people is having special foods at
holidays.

Ab!t "e Au#ors There is always opportunity for improvement. Elspeth Howland
I believe that no matter how much you know regarding one topic, thereʼs still something else about it thatʼs unlearned. I
mostly find learning new things enjoyable, and I like to try my hardest to tackle whatever it is Iʼm trying to master. Even
when things get tough, I always make an effort to give it my ultimate concentration. I think this is a good habit to have
because it leads to successful thinking, which leads to success. To add on to that, I feel that sometimes life can be like a
piano piece: When I was first taking lessons, I got a super easy, simple version of “Jingle Bells.” Back then, it was hard for
my small, still learning hands to handle. Eventually, as I practiced hard on it, I had it memorized. Then, in a few years, my
new teacher gave me a slightly more difficult piece of the same song. Just like before, I practiced with all my ability. Later
on, I again received a piece that was so complicated and polished that I couldnʼt help thinking back on my first “Jingle
Bells” and of how much Iʼve improved. Itʼs like that everyday. Iʼll learn one thing and Iʼll have memorized it to the best of
my capacity, then I learn something so much deeper and complicated about it the next day. Even some of the cleverest
people in the world have so much to learn. I think that, being the youngest in the family, I get to learn so much from my
sisters and parents that are so far ahead of me in their education, and I canʼt help feeling lucky. At the dinner table, my
sisters sometimes just spew out weird and interesting facts they learned at school. Other times, my parents will be talking
about politics and work. It can be interesting, and maybe in a few years I could be learning even more captivating details
about it. This is why I think that no matter how much youʼve learned, there will still be more information you can gather.
Lucy Moritz-Jones
Learning more means participating in class.
My goal in school is academic responsibility. My hope is to participate in most class discussions. Sometimes it is hard
to participate when everyone else is talking. Sometimes I just look at people in the room and donʼt participate. If I donʼt
participate, others might not, also. So, I will try more often. Since my strongest Habit of Work and Learning is
perseverance, I will not give up, and I will speak up more in class. Participating more in class is difficult for me, but I will
try to do it a little more often.
Inventing apps; using website Game Maker. Frank Katunda
! Sometimes in my spare time I like to make inventions. I do not like to copy someone elseʼs work, and I want to make sure
that everything I make is not copied. I consider myself a good gamer. I have been gaming all of my life, all the way back to
Playstation 1 and the first Xbox. The first time I heard about Game Maker, it was from my brother. He told me that it is an amazing
application for making video games, so I tried it. After playing “Call of Duty Black Ops 3,” I got an idea. I opened my computer and
started working on my project. It took me about two days. When I was done, it looked awesome. My friend also liked it, and thatʼs
what motivated me to keep on making games. After my game was born, I saved the game, copied it and added it in a website that
lets you play video games for free. Two days later I saw that 3,000 people liked my game. I was so happy that people liked my
invention. It is pretty cool. So in my spare time, I use this app to make video games.

Activities are important in my life.
I have been involved in many of activities, and I am planing to be in more. One of the first actives was the
Science Fair which made me excited for learning science. What I studied was Galileo. Even though it was not
too much like “science,” it still got my attention for loving science. Second, singing in the Glee Club made me
burst out in my talent. When I found out that I could join, I was thrilled! That was when I knew what my future
would hold. My singing led me to Glee Alstarz which made me step up my singing game. It was a week after I
tried out for Glee Alstarz, and finally they announced the people who got in. When I saw my name, my eyes
were almost bursting out into tears. Fourth, playing tennis this fall made me excited to play more sports. For
example, even though I do not know too much about tennis, it is the most exciting sport I could play in school. I
canʼt wait to play it next year. Fifth, even though I have not done this yet, drama will express my talent in singing
and acting. On my momʼs side of the family, they are singers and actors, and I would love to follow in their foot
steps. Finally, track will help me get better in every sport I am going to be in for the next few years. I have been
in track before, I am willing to be in it again, so I can be in more running activities. As you can see, activities
keep me involved in school and outside of school.
