Welcome to

#REELPRIDE25

Dear Fresno Reel Pride Film Festival Family:

We’re Here! We’re Queer! We’re Having a Film Festival!

It was 25 years ago this fall that a Fresno State student organization –
GLBSA (Gay Lesbian Bisexual Student Alliance) and today known as
USP (United Student Pride) – participated in the 3rd annual NCOD
(National Coming Out Day) event. The group passed out flyers from
a pink and lavender painted booth located in the free speech area.

Some members even had their names published in a “Daily Collegian”
newspaper ad to celebrate the occasion, too.
Concurrently, Ken Fries, a Fresno State student, had the
incredible idea to establish a local gay and lesbian film festival. That
fall semester of 1990, on behalf of the GLBSA, he and I co-founded,

co-produced and co-presented Central California’s inaugural gay and
lesbian film festival, in conjuction with NCOD.
What an amazing moment and magical time for our wonderful and
diverse community and allies. That first year was truly international,
as well. We presented, for free, 11 films, from 5 countries, screened

2 times per day, throughout 6 days. Some offerings were on film,
some were video, but this was the beginning of an event that has now
lasted a quarter-of-a-century.
Today, this organization is known as Fresno Reel Pride! And, this week it celebrates the 25th
Annual Gay & Lesbian Film Festival!
Thank you to our loyal festival pass holders, our generous sponsors, our endowment and silent auction
donors, our smiling volunteers, and our stedfast allies for your continued support.
Finally, I salute and thank the 2014 Board of Directors for their vision, guidance, patience and cooperation
in presenting this year’s film festival.

Peter Robertson
Co-Founder & Festival Director

From the Board of Directors
Every year, the goal of Fresno Reel Pride’s Board of Directors is to bring a wide array of LGBTQ+
cinema and entertainment to this great Central Valley and the diverse population that we fondly
call “Our Community”. Following with the festival’s long history of outreach, community awareness,
and just plain old-fashioned fun, this year promises to be five days of celebrating film, enjoying live
entertainment and parties, all while reconnecting with familiar faces.

This year, our volunteer Board of Directors, with new direction, bold ideas, and a fresh outlook, have
come together to bring what we hope to be an amazing adventure through the lens of our featured
filmmakers. By the time the festival closes, attendees will have taken a tour around the world, peeked
into intimate moments, peered into cultures of one or more countries, religions, or ethnicities and
emerged with new insights and knowledge. We invite you to laugh, cry and cheer with us, as we
experience the hard work, efforts and energies supplied by the artists, producers, sponsors and
volunteers of this year’s 25th Annual Fresno Reel Pride Film Festival.

Welcome to Fresno Reel Pride, the sixth oldest - and one of the largest – LGBTQ+ film festivals in
the nation, we are excited to be celebrating our 25th anniversary with you!

5:30 p.m. A Straight Year on the Gay Rodeo
$10 Director: Matt Livadary; 2014; USA; 93 min.

8 “QUEENS & COWBOYS: A Straight Year on the Gay Rodeo” chronicles
a complete season of the International Gay Rodeo Association (IGRA). Roping and
RP2014_GUTS.indd 8 riding across North America, the IGRA’s courageous cowboys and cowgirls brave
challenges both in and out of the arena on their quest to qualify for the World Finals at
the end of the season. Along the way, they’ll bust every stereotype in the book.
The film tells the story of five members of the International Gay Rodeo
Association. From Wade Earp, a descendant of cowboy legend Wyatt Earp and one of
the best competitors on the circuit; to Char Duran, a female bull rider who’s never won
a buckle but seems determined to die trying; “QUEENS & COWBOYS” weaves
the stories of its protagonists over the course of an entire rabble-rousing year.
An unprecedented look at the strength it takes to be gay in the rural west, this
film explores the many struggles threatening the IGRA and the LGBTQ community at
large, how far society has come on the subject of LGBTQ equality, and how far we still
have to go.

Argentinian writer-director Rodrigo Guerrero crafts a stunning chamber
piece with THE THIRD ONE, a story of random encounters and
surprising connections. Fede never expected to meet a couple while surfing
gay webcam chat rooms, but after some naughty flirtation, an older pair,
Franco and Hernán, invite the self-described punk over for dinner and some
fun. An engrossing and humorous evening unfolds, full of frank conversation
and natural sexual attraction. Using unconventionally long takes to propel the
dialogue and tension, Guerrero explores the intersection of intimacy, raw
sexuality, and human expectations in this stimulating character study that’s as
transformative for the young lead as it is for the audience.

Tower Theatre Lilting

4:30 p.m. Director: Hong Khaou | 2014 | UK | 87 min.
$10 In English and Mandarin with English subtitles

Junn, a widow who speaks only Mandarin, lives in a London nursing home; her son Kai
is her only visitor. When Kai dies suddenly, his “friend” Richard (actually Kai’s longtime
partner), out of a desire to be close to his partner’s beloved mother, hires Vann, a
translator, to facilitate and nourish Junn’s relationship with Alan, an English suitor with
whom she can share only flowers and dancing. While Richard balances his respect for
Kai’s secret and Junn’s fragility with his own grief, Junn is nudged toward understanding,
and bonds of family begin to form from the depths of their shared loss.
Director Hong Khaou’s short films SPRING and SUMMER have previously touched
Reel Pride audiences with his thoughtful and nuanced style. In this latest effort -- his
feature film debut -- he has crafted a beautifully moving film about family, grief, and
reconciliation.

Tower Theatre Appropriate Behavior
7:30 p.m. Director: Desiree Akhavan | 2014 | USA | 86 min.

$10 Attractive twentysomething Shirin (Desiree Akhavan) is seriously on the rebound after her
difficult breakup with Maxine (Rebeca Henderson), whom she is still pining after. In an attempt to
forget her and move on, Shirin dives into the world of casual sex in NYC. Between a threesome,
one-night stands, and the limitless OkCupid dating pool, she’s got a lot of options for distraction.
But it’s going to be difficult hiding her pansexual adventures from her Iranian parents, who are
accustomed to Shirin being their straight, rule-abiding daughter. She makes another effort
at human connection by getting a job as a film teacher for children, only to find that, like her
relationships, this job also falls short: her film students don’t have the capacity to give her any more
attention than Maxine could. Binge drinking might not solve any problems, but she doesn’t let that
stop her from trying. There’s got to be a better option than striving to be the unattainable ideal that
Maxine and her parents expect her to be!

Also written and directed by Desiree Akhavan, APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR won the
Emerging Female Filmmaker Award at the Provincetown International Film Festival and the
Grand Jury Prize for Best Screenwriting at the 2014 Outfest. This won’t be the last we see of
Akhavan, since she will be introduced as a new character in season four of Girls, set to air in 2015.

In this beautiful and uplifting gay romance, two teen track stars discover first love as
they train for the biggest relay race of their young lives. Chiseled Dutch phenom Gijs
Blom stars as Sieger, a thoughtful 15-year-old who grapples mightily with his emerging
gayness. Equally handsome Ko Zandvliet co-stars as his love interest, the spirited
and outgoing Marc. In their boyish summer courtship the two of them swim, bike,
run — and share ice cream and kisses as they gradually find the courage to become
vulnerable with one another. The romance between them unfolds with a palpable
sense of longing — and an aching sequence of heartache as Sieger tries to fight the
inevitable.

With its authentic and perfectly poignant tone BOYS ranks as one of the most
wholesomely romantic gay teen films ever.

42 LIMITED PARTNERSHIP is a 40-year love story of one of the first
same-sex marriages in the world, still trying to find its “happy ending.”
RP2014_GUTS.indd 42 In 1975, Filipino-American Richard Adams married his partner,
Australian-born Tony Sullivan, in Boulder, CO. Even their lawsuit,
the first ever to seek equal treatment for a same-sex marriage, couldn’t
secure a green card for Tony, who has lived his life as an undocumented
immigrant for four decades. Their heartbreaking tale has been
documented publicly for years in newspaper articles and talk shows, and
these pioneers for marriage equality fight to this day to gain Tony his
citizenship in light of last year’s historic Supreme Court rulings on gay
marriage.

Severance Dance Regarding Susan Sontag
Studio

2:30 p.m. Director: Nancy Kates 2014 | USA | 100 min.
$10
REGARDING SUSAN SONTAG is an intimate and nuanced investigation into the

life of one of the most influential and provocative thinkers of the 20th century. Passionate

and gracefully outspoken throughout her career, Susan Sontag became one of the most

important literary, political and feminist icons of her generation. The documentary explores

Sontag’s life through evocative experimental images, archival materials, accounts from

friends, family, colleagues, and lovers, as well as her own words, read by actress Patricia

Clarkson.
From her early infatuation with books and her first experience in a gay bar; from her marriage in
adolescence to her last lover, REGARDING SUSAN SONTAG is a fascinating look at a towering
cultural critic and writer whose works on photography, war, illness, and terrorism still resonate today. More
than any other thinker of her day, Sontag was watched, viewed, photographed and stared at. She was gazed
at, and she looked back, very carefully, particularly at language and metaphor and at photography and what
she called “the ecology of images.” REGARDING SUSAN SONTAG gives viewers the chance to
watch Sontag while she examines the world.
