From the Boardroom

Firstly members of the CSTFC management committee would like to extend a warm welcome to all
the players, officials and supporters from near neighbours Oldland Abbotonians to The Ridings this
evening for this GFA Challenge Trophy 3rd Round fixture.

We go into the game following a three-nil defeat against third placed Exmouth Town who were a big
well organised outfit and on the day too good for us on a heavy pitch. Hopefully the last few dry
days will suit our style of play during tonights match.

For the second week on the trot the other teams in the relegation zone all lost at the weekend so the
gods were with us again and, without wanting to show any favouritism, we hope it continues as we
still have to play all the relegation threatened teams again this season.

Hopefully the change in the weather will enable both the Reserve and A teams to play this coming
weekend as they are well behind in their fixtures which no doubt will result in huge fixture
congestion towards the end of the season.

Whilst we are on the subject of the weather and the continuing trend of a warmer and wetter climate
it does seem that the new development at the ground will include a 3 or 4G pitch to appropriate
standards to enable matches to take place at all levels of football, and to ensure that assets are
being used to their maximum potential.

Upcoming fixtures are:

Tues 21st Jan – Oldland Abbotonians (H)
Sat 25th Jan – Plymouth Parkway (H)
Sat 1st Feb – Bradford Town (A)
Sat 8th Feb – Westbury Utd (A)
Sat 15th Feb – Cadbury Heath (H)
Sat 22nd Feb – Clevedon Town (H)
Tues 25th Feb – Shepton Mallett (H)

Come on you Sods

CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN HISTORY

In the summer of 1959 Cliff Phelps decided it was time football association was brought back to
the town. It had been six long years since the boys of the town had donned the Blue & White of
Sodbury in the Western League. After several meetings at The Bell Inn (Now Brooks Bar & Kitchen)
the new club was formed. Major L.M.Harris was President, Mr. E Purbrick Chairman, Mr. C Phelps
Vice Chairman, Club Captain Dennis Greenaway and Youth Captain Michael Boulton. In the initial
1959/60 season they entered a senior team into The Dursley & Wotton League and a team into the
Youth Section. The following season Sodbury joined the Bristol and District League and throughout
the 60's remained in Division 3.
The 1970's began with relegation, when we finished bottom of Division 3 and the slump continued
in 1971/72 Season when finishing bottom of Division 4. The Mid 70's saw a few changes and the
ground work of the team today. Mike Fox became player Manager and 'The Sods' began a Sunday
Side. In the 1976/77 Season Sodbury finished third in Division 5 and gained promotion. The
1978/79 Season saw us go one better and finished runners-up of Division 4. To finish the decade
off and celebrate twenty years of the club's rebirth, we won the Championship of Division 3 in
1979/80.
The 1980's began were the 70's left off and a fourth place finish gave Sodbury promotion to Bristol
and District Division 1. 1981/82 saw the rebirth of our Reserve side and by the end of the season,
the 1st's had gained promotion to the Senior Division. From Division 5 to the Senior League in six
seasons. The first season in the Senior division was mid-table finish and the end of the season saw
Mike Fox's testimonial and an Ashton Gate appearance against Mangotsfield united. The following
season we finished third. After finishing 15th in 1985/86 we were relegated to Division 1, where
we remained until finishing runners up in 1988/89.

The 1990's kicked off with a third place finish and promotion to the Bristol Premier Combination
Div 1. in 1990/91. The early 90's saw a new clubhouse and changing rooms built with Players and
Committee members contributing their trades. A forth place finish and the winning of the Premier
cup in 1992/93 was the clubs best season so far. The Sods remained in Division 1 until the end of
the ninties, when they were promoted to the Premier Division for the 1999/00 Season.

The 2000's and after 3 seasons in the Premier, the Sods were relegated at the end of 2001/02
season. A new manager and new era began in 2002/03. Les Underdown and his Assisstant Jeff
Clark both ex-players with the club took over the reigns. A mid table finish in their first season,
saw Les leave and left Jeff in the hot seat. The following season saw another mid-table finish and
the Reserves become Champions with the exciting players now in the squad. 2004/05 ended in a
disappointing third place but the club now had a third team as well. The following season, the
previous year was forgotten when the club won the Championship and promoted back to the
Premier division. A mid table finish in the Premier division and the other 2 teams both winning
promotion was a good season in 2006/07. 2007/08 became the clubs most successful season,
when the first's won the Championship of the Premier and the reserves Champions of Bristol &
District division 1. The first season and a change of manager in the Gloucestershire county league
and the team finished bottom of the league, only winning 5 games. Even though the club finished
bottom, they were not relegated. Mark Stenner was appointed manager and he started the steady
march up the County league.

The 2010's has produced the club's most successful time in their history. Mark Stenner had taken
the team to a third place finish in the County league in 2010/11. After his departure early the
following season, Scott Gibson took over. A disappointing bottom place finish was followed by
two seasons of rebuilding and climbing the league. Karl Reese was appointed new manager at the
beginning of 2014/15 season and in his first season had promoted the club from the County league
to the dizzy heights of Western League football with a third place finish. Not a bad start for the
new gaffer but with some new faces and playing great football, we went 1 better the following
season and won the Western League Division 1 Championship. 2016/17 and the Western League
Premier division was tough but a very creditable 13th position and competing in the F.A.Vase was
our most successful season so far. 2017/18 was going to be a massive mountain to climb. Karl had
left the club and also half the first team had departed to pastures new. Enter Neil Simons our new
gaffer, a season in the Western league to take on with half a team and to make things a little more
difficult, your first game is the clubs first ever game in the F.A.Cup. The season ended with a 13th
place finish, an FA Cup victory and a quarter final place in the GFA Challenge trophy. Early in the
2018/19 Season Neil decided to leave the club and shortly afterwards we appointed our present
manager Joe White and his assistant Steve. At the end of the season under his leadership, the club
had finished 10th in the Western League and had the best run in the FA cup in the clubs history.
The club were successful in their appeal against the Hellenic League, sideways move by the F.A. So
2019/20 season we will remain in the Western League Premier. This uncertainty of which League
we would be playing in, unsettled the players and so several departed the Club before a ball was
kicked this Season. Three weeks before the season started we also lost our Manager and his
Assistant. Scott Gibson & Justin Bishop are our Caretaker 1st team management team.

UP THE SODS.

CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN

During our League Championship winning season of 2015/16, we met tonight’s
opponents twice, drawing 1 and losing 1. Our Home encounter, saw the Sods take the lead
early in the 2nd half but concede with just 4 minutes left on the clock, to a great strike by
Man of the Match Jack Parker. Both sides had been in the top 4 for most of the later part
of the season. It went to the wire and the last weekend of the season would decide if
Sodbury or Wells would be Champions.
For Sodbury to be crowned Champions they needed a win away at Calne by 5 clear goals
and Wells to lose. As we all know we played probably the greatest game i have witnessed
and won 6 – 0 and Wells lost away to Jack Parker and Oldland Abbotonians.
At the beginning of the 2016/17 season Jack Parker signed for The Sods and he made his
debut on 9th August 2016.
Jack in his fourth season with us, is our longest serving 1st team player and for the last 3
seasons has made a big contribution in keeping this club in the Premier division.
Jack has made 98 1st Team League Appearances and 6 F.A. Cup Appearances including the
Clubs first ever appearance in the competition on 5th August 2017.
This season Jack leads the way with the most appearances for the club and has also
contributed 2 goals. Jack Bleeds Black and White Stripes. UP THE SODS.

OLDLAND ABBOTONIANS – CLUB HISTORY

2010 was Oldland's centenary Year after Bristol and District League handbooks of the
1920's revealed that the team was founded as St. Anne’s (Oldland) at California Road in
1910. St. Anne’s (Oldland) won the GFA Minor Cup at the end of the 1921/22 season
when league programmes resumed after World War One, then lifted the 1925 GFA Junior
Cup but had to wait until the 1950's for further success. Little is known about the club's
fortunes between the wars, but they became founder members of the Bristol Premier
Combination in 1962 and were promoted to the Gloucester County League in 1973,
remaining there for twelve seasons until being re-elected as Oldland Decora in 1986.
The seventies were a successful period for the club; the reserves were District League
division 5 and 4 champions in two successive seasons (1975 and 1976) and the first team
won the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in 1977. Secretary of the Reserve and A sides, Reg
Hamblin, first played for the club in 1952 and has been secretary since 1962, he is a life
member of the Bristol and District League and highly regarded for his efficiency and
manner throughout local football.
The A side won the Bristol and District division 5 title again in 1991, then former player
Herbie Johnson led a B team of mainly 16-year olds to the GFA Primary Cup in 1994 and
the Bristol and Avon League's Jack Jenkins and Sportsman's Trophies in the following
year. In 1996 they also won the league's Division 1 title. In 1995 the first team were
relegated from the Gloucester County League but bounced straight back as Bristol
Premier Combination champions the following year.

ABBOTONIANS

Pupils at Hanham Abbots school launched Abbotonians football club as juniors in 1947
and they enjoyed many league and cup successes in the early years, including Kennedy
Cup wins in 1961, 1966 and 1972. The club also won the GFA Intermediate Cup in 1962
and 1969, the 1968 GFA Minor Cup. It also became the Bristol Churches League Under 16
league winners in 1959 and 1961 and Under 18 league winners in 1960.
Whilst playing at Longwell Green, Abbots were guided by long serving and now sadly
passed away secretary George Threader, manager Jeff Evans and chairman Bill Holloway,
whose son Ian has enjoyed tremendous professional success as a player with Bristol
Rovers, Wimbledon and QPR and is now a successful football league manager.

OLDLAND ABBOTONIANS

The two clubs merged in 1998, playing in the Somerset Senior League. The late Alan Bush
was appointed chairman of the newly merged club based at Oldland's Castle Road
ground. Oldland Abbotonians won the Somerset Senior League Division One in 2004/05,
were Premier Division runners up in 2005/06 and eventually promoted to the Toolstation
League in 2006/07. Derek Jones has remained with the club ever since and is now
Chairman.
Lee Gibbs had led the club into the League before passing over to ex-Arsenal, Bristol
Rovers and Portsmouth player David Hillier at the start of the 2008/09 season; Hillier

helped them become the first ever Division 1 side to win the Les Phillips (league) cup,
securing 7th place in the league as well. Replacement manager Spencer Thomas and his
squad managed to debut in the FA Cup and gain runners-up spot during the 2010/11
season, but promotion was snatched away as the ground was not up to the League's strict
regulations so he and most of the squad left for Longwell Green.
A new management team of Paul Britton and Gary Brown arrived, planning permission
was granted for floodlights and these were unveiled in November 2011. The pair stayed
at Castle Road for two seasons and led the side to a 5th place finish in 2012/13, ending
with a 19-game unbeaten run but they too left and took most of the squad, this time to
local rivals Bitton.
They were replaced by former Keynsham Town and Paulton Rovers player Nigel Lee but
shortly before Christmas, Nigel left the club being replaced by former Yate United
Reserves boss Dale Dempsey. Having finished 4th and been assured that promotion was
imminent at the end of 2015/16 Oldland were disappointingly not promoted and had to
start again. 2016/17 was a pivotal year as although the football side disappointed,
through fundraising and grants the club spent in excess of £70,000 on ground
improvements including safety fencing, pitch maintenance equipment,a new stand and
CCTV system and it is hoped that the dream of Premier Division status can now be
achieved.
In 2017/18 the team were led by former Southampton trainee and Bristol Rovers
professional Scott Armstrong, but he stood down for personal reasons in September 2018
as did later that season former player Jon Toy. The 2018/19 season saw Clayton
Woodman arrive along with assistant Steve Cains plus coaches Darren Sealey and Paul
Weeks.
The Reserves are managed by Tom Hutton and Steve Bristow and from 2018/19 a newly
formed adult third team, The Colts, plays in the Bristol & District League, managed by
Sam Jones.
The Under 18s are managed by Tony Podluzny.
In total, the club now runs three adult sides, a ladies team and Under-18s plus following a
merger in the summer of 2013 at youth level with Deerswood Youth FC, 13 junior sides
from under-6’s to under-16’s training.

PROFESSIONAL CONNECTIONS

Oldland has often been described as a nursery for Bristol Rovers with Vic Lambden, Peter
Sampson, Brian Bush and Mike Tippets all playing for the club before turning professional
at Eastville. Former Rovers favourite Bobby Jones was one of many successful Oldland
managers, a list which includes David Hillier.
Abbots rose to heady heights under the leadership of Alan Bush in the 1980s with the
help of former Rovers players Jeff Meacham, the late Steve Talboys (Wimbledon) plus
Rovers favourites Graham Day, Peter Aitken and Phil Bater. Among other youngsters who
left Abbots to play for Rovers were Stuart Taylor, Phil Kite and Kevin Westaway.

CHIPPING SODBURY RESERVES HISTORY

When Chipping Sodbury reformed in 1959/60 season, a Reserve team was formed and
entered the Dursley and Wotton League the following Season in 1960/61. The Reserves
then entered The Bristol & District League Division 6 the season after. The Reserves
stayed in the Bristol & District League through the 1960’s. The Present history of the
Reserves began in the 1981/82 season under manager John Beer. The Reserves spent two
seasons in The Bristol & Avon League before joining The Bristol & District League in
1983/84 Season. After two promotions in 9 seasons, the Reserves became Champions of
Division 4 in 1992/93. Ten years later, in 2003/04, the Championship of Division 3 was
attained. A Great run in the GFA Intermediate cup saw the side reach the final but come
runners-up to Soundwell Victoria the following Season. After finishing runners-up and
getting promoted in 2006/07 they go 1 better and become Champions of the Bristol &
District League Division 1 in 2007/08. The next seven seasons were spent yo-yoing be-
tween the Senior Division and Division 1. Becoming Champions for a fourth time in the
Reserves history saw them win the Senior Division in 2015/16. The following season was
another success for the Reserves, when in their first season in The Premier Combination
Division 1 they finished runners-up and were promoted to The Premier Combination.
The first season in The Premier Combination saw “The Sods” leaving it late and winning
5 of their last 6 games in a 15 day period, to finish in tenth place. 2018/19 Season saw the
team finish in 11th place and remain in the Premier Combination, the highest league
standing in the Reserves History.
