From the Boardroom

Firstly I’d like to extend a warm welcome to all the players, officials and supporters
from Roman Glass St George to The Ridings this afternoon for this Premier Division
local derby. We’d also like to thank them for their Scrooge like attitude and not
entering them into the Christmas spirit by refusing to waive the notice period and
denying us the opportunity to re-sign George Box. A great attitude, from a club
which comprises mainly of our ex players. Enough said except for the fact that their
plan doesn’t seem to be working very well.

We hope that everyone here today has had a good Christmas and like the club is
looking forward to the New Year.

We go into today’s game in the back of a hard fought victory in our GFA Challenge
trophy against Tytherington Rocks followed by a 4 – 3 reverse at Tavistock where we
managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory when leading 3 – 1 with ten
minutes to go. Maybe it was because we didn’t have any substitutes as players cried
off at the last minute. Thanks guys from those players who did go and from the
volunteer officials of the club who work their butts off to provide you with a game at
this level.

I am hoping that the new year will see a change of fortune for us, and as you will see
we have a run of home games in January which means that we will probably have a
full squad available. We are entertaining some of the better teams in the league
however it would be a good time to show that we are ready to put up a real fight for
survival. The spirit is there now we need to convert it to results.

Interestingly I watched the Cribbs v Hallen game on Boxing Day and was pleased to
see Joe White on the subs bench in their 4 – 1 thrashing. They were very poor and
well beaten in the end in what was in general a poor game.

Finally Chipping Sodbury Town FC would like to wish everyone attending this
afternoons match a very Happy and Prosperous New Year.

Upcoming fixtures are:

Sat 4th Jan – Shepton Mallett (A)
Sat 11th Jan – Wellington (H)
Sat 18th Jan – Exmouth Town (H)
Sat 25th Jan – Plymouth Parkway (H)
Tues 28th Jan – Cadbury Heath (H)

Come on you Sods - Geoff Endicott – Toolstation Fixture Secretary.

CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN HISTORY

In the summer of 1959 Cliff Phelps decided it was time football association was brought back to
the town. It had been six long years since the boys of the town had donned the Blue & White of
Sodbury in the Western League. After several meetings at The Bell Inn (Now Brooks Bar & Kitchen)
the new club was formed. Major L.M.Harris was President, Mr. E Purbrick Chairman, Mr. C Phelps
Vice Chairman, Club Captain Dennis Greenaway and Youth Captain Michael Boulton. In the initial
1959/60 season they entered a senior team into The Dursley & Wotton League and a team into the
Youth Section. The following season Sodbury joined the Bristol and District League and throughout
the 60's remained in Division 3.
The 1970's began with relegation, when we finished bottom of Division 3 and the slump continued
in 1971/72 Season when finishing bottom of Division 4. The Mid 70's saw a few changes and the
ground work of the team today. Mike Fox became player Manager and 'The Sods' began a Sunday
Side. In the 1976/77 Season Sodbury finished third in Division 5 and gained promotion. The
1978/79 Season saw us go one better and finished runners-up of Division 4. To finish the decade
off and celebrate twenty years of the club's rebirth, we won the Championship of Division 3 in
1979/80.
The 1980's began were the 70's left off and a fourth place finish gave Sodbury promotion to Bristol
and District Division 1. 1981/82 saw the rebirth of our Reserve side and by the end of the season,
the 1st's had gained promotion to the Senior Division. From Division 5 to the Senior League in six
seasons. The first season in the Senior division was mid-table finish and the end of the season saw
Mike Fox's testimonial and an Ashton Gate appearance against Mangotsfield united. The following
season we finished third. After finishing 15th in 1985/86 we were relegated to Division 1, where
we remained until finishing runners up in 1988/89.

The 1990's kicked off with a third place finish and promotion to the Bristol Premier Combination
Div 1. in 1990/91. The early 90's saw a new clubhouse and changing rooms built with Players and
Committee members contributing their trades. A forth place finish and the winning of the Premier
cup in 1992/93 was the clubs best season so far. The Sods remained in Division 1 until the end of
the ninties, when they were promoted to the Premier Division for the 1999/00 Season.

The 2000's and after 3 seasons in the Premier, the Sods were relegated at the end of 2001/02
season. A new manager and new era began in 2002/03. Les Underdown and his Assisstant Jeff
Clark both ex-players with the club took over the reigns. A mid table finish in their first season,
saw Les leave and left Jeff in the hot seat. The following season saw another mid-table finish and
the Reserves become Champions with the exciting players now in the squad. 2004/05 ended in a
disappointing third place but the club now had a third team as well. The following season, the
previous year was forgotten when the club won the Championship and promoted back to the
Premier division. A mid table finish in the Premier division and the other 2 teams both winning
promotion was a good season in 2006/07. 2007/08 became the clubs most successful season,
when the first's won the Championship of the Premier and the reserves Champions of Bristol &
District division 1. The first season and a change of manager in the Gloucestershire county league
and the team finished bottom of the league, only winning 5 games. Even though the club finished
bottom, they were not relegated. Mark Stenner was appointed manager and he started the steady
march up the County league.

The 2010's has produced the club's most successful time in their history. Mark Stenner had taken
the team to a third place finish in the County league in 2010/11. After his departure early the
following season, Scott Gibson took over. A disappointing bottom place finish was followed by
two seasons of rebuilding and climbing the league. Karl Reese was appointed new manager at the
beginning of 2014/15 season and in his first season had promoted the club from the County league
to the dizzy heights of Western League football with a third place finish. Not a bad start for the
new gaffer but with some new faces and playing great football, we went 1 better the following
season and won the Western League Division 1 Championship. 2016/17 and the Western League
Premier division was tough but a very creditable 13th position and competing in the F.A.Vase was
our most successful season so far. 2017/18 was going to be a massive mountain to climb. Karl had
left the club and also half the first team had departed to pastures new. Enter Neil Simons our new
gaffer, a season in the Western league to take on with half a team and to make things a little more
difficult, your first game is the clubs first ever game in the F.A.Cup. The season ended with a 13th
place finish, an FA Cup victory and a quarter final place in the GFA Challenge trophy. Early in the
2018/19 Season Neil decided to leave the club and shortly afterwards we appointed our present
manager Joe White and his assistant Steve. At the end of the season under his leadership, the club
had finished 10th in the Western League and had the best run in the FA cup in the clubs history.
The club were successful in their appeal against the Hellenic League, sideways move by the F.A. So
2019/20 season we will remain in the Western League Premier. This uncertainty of which League
we would be playing in, unsettled the players and so several departed the Club before a ball was
kicked this Season. Three weeks before the season started we also lost our Manager and his
Assistant. Scott Gibson & Justin Bishop are our Caretaker 1st team management team.

UP THE SODS.

Our visitors today recognised in the first game of Asso-
ciation Football to be played in the Bristol area on 2nd

Chipping Sodbury Town v Tytherington Rocks

GFA Challenge Cup 2nd Round - Tuesday 17 December 2019

Ten years ago these teams met in round one of the same competition and it was the
Hellenic Div. 1 West side that progressed to round two following a win on penalties after
the match ended 2-2.

On a cold but dry evening it was the visitors that opened the scoring after 22 minutes
having dominated possession in the opening quarter without really threatening the
Sodbury goal. With their first shot on target the Rocks Rahem Rowan found the right hand
corner of the net with a shot from the edge of the area.

The Sods responded almost immediately and were awarded a penalty just three minutes
later after a clear trip in the penalty box. Chris Kritikos struck a fierce shot into the roof of
the net to give his side the equaliser.

The gamed levelled out into an evenly fought contest with most of the action taking place
in midfield. With just five minutes of the half remaining Rahem Rowan added his second
of the night with a low shot that didn’t appear to have any power but that bypassed
everyone to find the corner of the net.

Just five minutes before the home side were unfortunate not to take a lead of their own
when Dan Brown’s dipping shot from the edge of the area was tipped over by
theTytherington keeper.

The Sods could count themselves unlucky to be behind at the break with their visitors
scoring from their only two shots of the half.

Both sides struggled to create an opening in the second half with both defences on top
however it was the home side that looked the most likely. Tytherington found themselves
under increasing pressure as the half progressed with Sodbury looking for an equaliser.

With just over half an hour played the Sods were awarded their second penalty of the
evening following a robust challenge and Luke Burman stepped up with Kritikos having
already been substituted. Burman replicated his team mates spot kick firing hard and high
into the centre of the net with the keeper diving to his right.

The game opened up with both teams searching for a winner but clear-cut chances were
few and far between and the game ended 2-2.

And so to penalties and Jack Murray the Sods keeper saved his best to last and blocked
the visitors second and fourth penalties and despite the Sods also having a penalty saved
they recorded a reverse of the fixture from 10 years ago and ran out 4-3 winners in the
shoot out.

ROMAN GLASS ST GEORGE CLUB HISTORY

The club Roman Glass St George is the result of an amalgamation between Bristol St
George and Roman Glass. Bristol St George was formed in 1882 and is the oldest club in
Bristol. They were founder members of the GFA in 1886 and won the GFA Senior
Challenge Cup on two occasions 1894 and 1895 beating Eastville Rovers 3-1 on the first
occasion.

The club also entered the FA Cup in 1891 and the inaugural FA Amateur Cup in 1894. The
current ground at Bell Hill was opened with a match between a Bristol & District XI and
the English champions Aston Villa in 1894. In 1897 the club turned professional and spent
two seasons in the Birmingham & District League. The club reverted to amateur status in
1901 and continued that way until joining the Western League in 1928. In 1935 after
struggling financially they dropped out and joined the Bristol & District League once again.
They won the first division only once in 1949/50 but were always a leading team until they
became founder members of the Bristol Premier Combination in 1957. St George played in
this league winning it five seasons in succession from 1963/64 season to 1967/68 until
they joined the Gloucestershire County League on its formation in 1968.

The Sixties was the Golden era for the club as in addition to winning these league titles
they also managed to win the Gloucestershire Senior Amateur Cup, five times which
included four successive seasons. Success was also found in the FA Amateur Cup when
they regularly took on the top amateur clubs in the Country such as Hendon, Dagenham,
Hayes and Leytonstone in front of crowds numbering thousands. St George won the
County league in 1969/70 and was runners-up twice before a gradual decline in fortunes
until in 1987 the club were expelled from the league due to sub standard facilities. A
return to the Premier Combination saw a brief improvement resulting in winning the
Premier Division in 1992/93. With no promotion gained the club nosedived and were in
danger of folding when Roman Glass stepped in.

Roman Glass originated as a street team called Wyndham Wanderers in 1960 and played
in the Bristol Church of England League and then joined the Bristol & District League in
1974. The club enjoyed moderate success gradually climbing the leagues and in 1980
changed its name to Roman Glass. The club began to decline until in 1990 Roger Hudd
took over as manager and steered them to win the Division 4 title the club continued to
improve gaining successive promotions until the amalgamation in 1995.

Roman Glass St George in the Premier Combination immediately gained success, winning
promotion to the Premier Division that season and then winning that league in 1998/99
season to earn promotion to the County League. The club won the County league in
2001/02 and then season 2006/07 which resulted in promotion to the Toolstation
(Western) League, a league the club last played in, in 1935.

BRISTOL PREMIER COMBINATION

CHIPPING SODBURY RESERVES HISTORY

When Chipping Sodbury reformed in 1959/60 season, a Reserve team was formed and
entered the Dursley and Wotton League the following Season in 1960/61. The Reserves
then entered The Bristol & District League Division 6 the season after. The Reserves
stayed in the Bristol & District League through the 1960’s. The Present history of the
Reserves began in the 1981/82 season under manager John Beer. The Reserves spent two
seasons in The Bristol & Avon League before joining The Bristol & District League in
1983/84 Season. After two promotions in 9 seasons, the Reserves became Champions of
Division 4 in 1992/93. Ten years later, in 2003/04, the Championship of Division 3 was
attained. A Great run in the GFA Intermediate cup saw the side reach the final but come
runners-up to Soundwell Victoria the following Season. After finishing runners-up and
getting promoted in 2006/07 they go 1 better and become Champions of the Bristol &
District League Division 1 in 2007/08. The next seven seasons were spent yo-yoing be-
tween the Senior Division and Division 1. Becoming Champions for a fourth time in the
Reserves history saw them win the Senior Division in 2015/16. The following season was
another success for the Reserves, when in their first season in The Premier Combination
Division 1 they finished runners-up and were promoted to The Premier Combination.
The first season in The Premier Combination saw “The Sods” leaving it late and winning
5 of their last 6 games in a 15 day period, to finish in tenth place. 2018/19 Season saw the
team finish in 11th place and remain in the Premier Combination, the highest league
standing in the Reserves History.

THE RESERVES

Half-time Thoughts with The Gaffer

Christmas is always a time of reflection, it is an opportunity to find out what can be
expected in second half of the season. Hope you all had a great Christmas and did not eat
too much (players included). As you are all aware that this season has not really gone to
plan with the weather. Only playing 7 league games, only a third of the season, long way
to go with a few night games thrown in. Never seen so much rain and this has had, not
only for us but for all Sodbury teams in getting any momentum with playing week in ,
week out. Having said that, the weather has probably helped us in getting players back
from long term injuries, especially Ollie Clarke who has been out for eight months and
only missed four games of this season.
The reserves’ first game of the season when it was sunny and dry was full of optimistic
having a good pre-season. Alas, it did not go to plan losing 9-1 against Longwell Green.
We have had a few honest words after the game which it seems the players have taken
this on board. From then, the players have responded brilliantly and are now moving in
the right direction having picked up 2 wins in the last 3 games. Besides the first game, we
have been playing well, some great football from the team. I am disappointed for the
players, the effort they put in we haven’t picked up more points. We are a young team
with the core players only having an average age of 22, great for the future of the club,
they are all willing to learn and have the desire to get into the first team.
I would to thank Ian Jevons for his support again this year, without his backing my blood
pressure would be even higher! The committee, for their continuing support, it is huge
team effort behind the scenes that no one sees in running Chipping Sodbury.
Wish you all a Happy New Year - UTS
