From the Boardroom

Firstly I’d like to extend a warm welcome to all the players, officials and supporters from
Cadbury Heath to The Ridings this evening for this Premier Division local derby.

When we played at the Heath a few weeks we were unlucky not to come away without a point
as missed chances cost us dearly and instead of being clear winners we were on the end of
a 2 – 1 defeat. Since then we have suffered further defeats against Roman Glass Chipping
Sodbury and Keynsham Town and currently we occupy the bottom of the table position.

We knew that this season would be difficult and that building a new team that can compete
at this level would take time however again we have not been helped by loss of several
players and injuries to players who would normally been playing. We hope that today’s
game will provide us with a platform to move forward.

Following last season’s FA fiasco with regard to Lateral Movement the Leagues Committee
have been issuing regular newsletters, the latest of which clearly indicates a change of rule
to address the mistakes made by the FA last season as well as suggesting further boundary
changes which may well affect more clubs. The relevant information is set out below:

“The prospect of lateral movement is an annual one for all Clubs participating at Steps 2 to 7 of the
National League System. However, on completion of the 2019-20 season this prospect will increase for
Clubs operating at Steps 4, 5 and 6 owing to the NLS restructure.
The Regulation that covers lateral movement was amended over the summer and so we take the
opportunity to highlight this to Clubs:
‘‘It may be necessary from time to time to move Clubs laterally at the same Step. Each year the
Committee will consider whether any lateral movements may be necessary at each Step and the final
decision shall rest with a sub-committee of the Committee. A Club may appeal the decision of the
Committee to an Appeal Board and such appeal shall be conducted in accordance with the Appeal
Regulations.
In coming to its decision the Committee will have regard to any representations made by any party,
the distance to be travelled by any Club to be moved compared to the distance travelled in the Playing
Season prior to movement; the financial impact on the Club to be moved, the frequency with which
the Club has been moved in the past; the number of Clubs both in the
division to which the Club is to be moved and in the division from which the Club is moved, and any
other matter that it considers to be relevant.’’

It’s time therefore for the clubs Management Committee to start preparing the case why we
should not be laterally moved. Watch this space!!!

CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN HISTORY

In the summer of 1959 Cliff Phelps decided it was time football association was brought back to
the town. It had been six long years since the boys of the town had donned the Blue & White of
Sodbury in the Western League. After several meetings at The Bell Inn (Now Brooks Bar & Kitchen)
the new club was formed. Major L.M.Harris was President, Mr. E Purbrick Chairman, Mr. C Phelps
Vice Chairman, Club Captain Dennis Greenaway and Youth Captain Michael Boulton. In the initial
1959/60 season they entered a senior team into The Dursley & Wotton League and a team into the
Youth Section. The following season Sodbury joined the Bristol and District League and throughout
the 60's remained in Division 3.
The 1970's began with relegation, when we finished bottom of Division 3 and the slump continued
in 1971/72 Season when finishing bottom of Division 4. The Mid 70's saw a few changes and the
ground work of the team today. Mike Fox became player Manager and 'The Sods' began a Sunday
Side. In the 1976/77 Season Sodbury finished third in Division 5 and gained promotion. The
1978/79 Season saw us go one better and finished runners-up of Division 4. To finish the decade
off and celebrate twenty years of the club's rebirth, we won the Championship of Division 3 in
1979/80.
The 1980's began were the 70's left off and a fourth place finish gave Sodbury promotion to Bristol
and District Division 1. 1981/82 saw the rebirth of our Reserve side and by the end of the season,
the 1st's had gained promotion to the Senior Division. From Division 5 to the Senior League in six
seasons. The first season in the Senior division was mid-table finish and the end of the season saw
Mike Fox's testimonial and an Ashton Gate appearance against Mangotsfield united. The following
season we finished third. After finishing 15th in 1985/86 we were relegated to Division 1, where
we remained until finishing runners up in 1988/89.

The 1990's kicked off with a third place finish and promotion to the Bristol Premier Combination
Div 1. in 1990/91. The early 90's saw a new clubhouse and changing rooms built with Players and
Committee members contributing their trades. A forth place finish and the winning of the Premier
cup in 1992/93 was the clubs best season so far. The Sods remained in Division 1 until the end of
the ninties, when they were promoted to the Premier Division for the 1999/00 Season.

The 2000's and after 3 seasons in the Premier, the Sods were relegated at the end of 2001/02
season. A new manager and new era began in 2002/03. Les Underdown and his Assisstant Jeff
Clark both ex-players with the club took over the reigns. A mid table finish in their first season,
saw Les leave and left Jeff in the hot seat. The following season saw another mid-table finish and
the Reserves become Champions with the exciting players now in the squad. 2004/05 ended in a
disappointing third place but the club now had a third team as well. The following season, the
previous year was forgotten when the club won the Championship and promoted back to the
Premier division. A mid table finish in the Premier division and the other 2 teams both winning
promotion was a good season in 2006/07. 2007/08 became the clubs most successful season,
when the first's won the Championship of the Premier and the reserves Champions of Bristol &
District division 1. The first season and a change of manager in the Gloucestershire county league
and the team finished bottom of the league, only winning 5 games. Even though the club finished
bottom, they were not relegated. Mark Stenner was appointed manager and he started the steady
march up the County league.

The 2010's has produced the club's most successful time in their history. Mark Stenner had taken
the team to a third place finish in the County league in 2010/11. After his departure early the
following season, Scott Gibson took over. A disappointing bottom place finish was followed by
two seasons of rebuilding and climbing the league. Karl Reese was appointed new manager at the
beginning of 2014/15 season and in his first season had promoted the club from the County league
to the dizzy heights of Western League football with a third place finish. Not a bad start for the
new gaffer but with some new faces and playing great football, we went 1 better the following
season and won the Western League Division 1 Championship. 2016/17 and the Western League
Premier division was tough but a very creditable 13th position and competing in the F.A.Vase was
our most successful season so far. 2017/18 was going to be a massive mountain to climb. Karl had
left the club and also half the first team had departed to pastures new. Enter Neil Simons our new
gaffer, a season in the Western league to take on with half a team and to make things a little more
difficult, your first game is the clubs first ever game in the F.A.Cup. The season ended with a 13th
place finish, an FA Cup victory and a quarter final place in the GFA Challenge trophy. Early in the
2018/19 Season Neil decided to leave the club and shortly afterwards we appointed our present
manager Joe White and his assistant Steve. At the end of the season under his leadership, the club
had finished 10th in the Western League and had the best run in the FA cup in the clubs history.
The club were successful in their appeal against the Hellenic League, sideways move by the F.A. So
2019/20 season we will remain in the Western League Premier. This uncertainty of which League
we would be playing in, unsettled the players and so several departed the Club before a ball was
kicked this Season. Three weeks before the season started we also lost our Manager and his
Assistant. Scott Gibson & Justin Bishop are our Caretaker 1st team management team.

KIERON HACKERS

Kieron was just 17 when he was diagnosed with a termi-
nal brain tumour.
Kieron started playing for Sodbury’s Under 18’s a year
before his diagnosis and was just starting to make his
mark within the adult teams. No doubt if Kieron was
here today he would be playing adult football for one of
the men’s team.
Kieron was a midfielder who scored some quality goals
none more special than his goal against local rivals St
Nics Under 18’s.
The club held a fundraising football match to raise
money for his bucket list, which not only saw the largest
crowd ever at the Ridings but also Kieron played football
for the last time against medical advice.
As he said to the manager... ‘What’s the worse that could
happen I’m already dieing’.
Unfortunately on 3rd November 2017 Kieron lost his
battle with Cancer and sadly died.
The Kieron Hackers award which the club have set up
will ensure this young talent’s name continues to live on.

CADBURY HEATH FOOTBALL CLUB (THE HEATHENS)

The Club was first established in 1894 by Cadbury Heath Adult School (later to
be known as Cadbury Heath Primary School) when Cadbury Heath was just a
little narrow, one-street village, way outside the boundaries of Bristol.

Our first pitch was situated at Mill Lane, changing in the Social Club and
heating up water for tin baths. With a break for the War years, and the
transferring to what is now Coronation Park, we progressed from the Bristol &
District League to Division Two of the Bristol Premier Combination, and then to
Division One in 1961, after winning the GFA Junior Cup in 1950. In the 60’s the
team (only a first team then) built their own baths at the Social Club. This
period of success coincided with the renting of our present ground – Springfield
– for £10 per annum from a local farmer and President Jim Warner. This was
then an open pasture land with cows, a rope had to be put around the playing
area. It had no Electricity Water or Drainage. The tea bar was a garden shed.
The offer to purchase for £250 was short-sighted declined, as the field was later
sold as part of major development land and only intense lobbying led by the
then Chairman, Mike Packer persuaded the Council to allocate Springfield as
part of Public Open Space leased to the Football Club for dual use. This has
meant that we have not been entirely masters of our own destiny. Even so,
Gloucestershire county League championship in 1971-72, 1972-73, 73 74 and
runners up 74/75 at the same time winning the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in
1972/73 73/74 and 1974-75, under Ralph Miller’s Management. The success
pushed the club into joining the Midland Combination after being turned down
by the Western League due to the dressing rooms being situated too far from the
pitch (what is now the Social Club bottle store). A stand was built for the
requirement of the Midland Combination (with tea bar). After finishing fifth
and reaching the quarter finals of the FA Vase with a crowd of 2,000 at
Springfield, and more listening live on local Radio Bristol for the tie against
Billericay Town from Essex, the Manager left after a disagreement with the
committee, and took most of the players, to Cinderford Town. This shook the
club to the core, we were relegated and had to drop two divisions to the Avon
Premier Combination (we were founder members) there was no `Pyramid
System’ in force. A slow recovery took place, half time rooms being built, then a
terrapin to provide on-pitch dressing rooms, taking advantage of newly laid
drains for the new houses, a water supply, and electricity for training
floodlights. Elected back into the Gloucestershire County League in 1984 a
reserve team was started in 1988 ran by John Clarke formed from CHYMCA
the first team finished as runners-up in the County League in 1990. The
Managers in this period were Bob Williams, Dave Pitman, Les Allan, John
Harris, Andy Stone, Keith Cottrell, Brian Knighton, Mike Ratcliffe, and Chris
Stone. We celebrated our Centenary by winning the League Championship for
the fifth time in 1994, under the consistent managership of Brian Knighton, and
we continued to dominate the league once again. Continued improvement on

and off the field saw new dressing rooms built on the ground in 1997, a youth
academy started under Malcolm Knowlson and a new terrapin replaced the one
for the youth section formed from an amalgamation with local youth football

club, Grimsbury Rangers. After winning the Gloucestershire County League for
a record sixth time, under the management of Andy Black, an application to join
the Western League was again turned down due to the lack of a fence. Andy
then left the club to join Bitton and Steve Plenty was appointed Manager along
with Lee Knighton. After a public open meeting and a long battle with the
Council, the fence was finally erected at a cost of £15,000 funded by Cadbury
Heath Football Club. Steve and Lee’s first season in charge got runners up spot,
of which consequently secured our election to the Toolstation Western League at
long last! After 2 seasons in charge, Steve Plenty stood down due to family
commitments and Lee Knighton took over the hot seat for a season and then the
reigns were handed over to his assistant, Glen Smart, who consolidated our
position for four seasons. Lee Knighton took over as First Team Manager for his
second spell and appointed Andy Weeks as his assistant in season 2005/6, also

that year Steve Plenty became Chairman when Dave Smart stood down. After
five years of planning tribulations Floodlights were successfully installed at the
end of season 2008/2009 this being Phase one of Heaths redevelopment plan,
being largely due to the efforts of Chairman Steve Plenty. The Heath and The
Social Club went their separate ways in season 2011/12. Andy Black joined the
club for his third spell in season 2010/11 appointing Glenn Smart as his assistant
culminating in the first division championship and promotion to the Premier
Div. in season 2011/12. Then followed two good seasons in the premier division
with the last two seasons being a period of trying to rebuild the side after most of
the original players either retiring or moving on to higher level football. Phase
two, is in the planning stage which is for a new dressing room facility
incorporating a new clubhouse & new 100 seat stand with a covered area for a
further 100. During season 2015-2016 Roger Coke joined the club as coach.

Season 2016-2017 starts with a new first team coach Phillip Bater Ex Bristol
Rovers and the introduction of a U18 side who will be playing in the Bristol &
Glos U18 league. Mid season Rob Mallett joined the coaching staff to assist
Andy Black. First team won the GFA Challenge Trophy beating Fairfield Town
4-3 0n penalties. End of season Andy Black resigned as manager and became
director of football. Season 2017-2018, Rob Mallett was appointed first team
manager. Season 2018-2019 Andy Black was appointed first team manager.
2019-2020 John Black has joined the management team.

system. were soon troubled by Filton’s attack.
The Home side opened the scoring in the first 10
minutes after a free-kick, the shot being
deflected into the net by the inside right.
Sodbury’s new signing set up a good move that
led to a Greenman shot hitting the post. Sodbury
equalised a minute before half-time after forcing
a corner on the right. Didcott sent the ball to the
near post for Messenger to head in a great goal.
The Visitor’s dropped the 4-2-4 system in the
second half but Filton still had the edge in
attack, bringing some fine saves from
Hallhouse, while Brace, Brown and Messenger
went close to scoring for Sodbury.

Chipping Sodbury 1969/70

Bristol & District Division 6.
18th October 1969
Henbury OB ‘A’ 2

Chipping Sodbury Reserves 0

Chipping Sodbury Reserves have only themselves to blame for defeat
at the hands of the league leaders Henbury. For if the visitors had
taken their chances they could have won the match in the first half.

Henbury took an early lead when Peek was too casual with a back
pass and the home centre nipped in to score with a first time shot.
Sodbury hit back strongly and shots from Lediard and Messenger
were well saved by the Henbury keeper. Hockey put through by Mes-
senger shot tamely wide with only the keeper to beat and the same
player missed an even easier chance shortly afterwards. Then a
fierce 25 yard free kick by Lidiard was brilliantly saved.

The Visitors started the second half strongly and Messenger twice
just failed to connect with centres from the right. But as all their ef-
forts went unrewarded Sodbury became distinctly ragged. Henbury
took advantage to pile on the pressure and only a series of fine saves
by Swatton kept them at bay until shortly before the end when the
Henbury centre forward took advantage of a defensive mix-up to
score a neat goal.

CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN RESERVES
BRISTOL PREMIER COMBINATION

CHIPPING SODBURY RESERVES HISTORY

When Chipping Sodbury reformed in 1959/60 season, a Reserve team was formed and
entered the Dursley and Wotton League the following Season in 1960/61. The Reserves
then entered The Bristol & District League Division 6 the season after. The Reserves
stayed in the Bristol & District League through the 1960’s. The Present history of the
Reserves began in the 1981/82 season under manager John Beer. The Reserves spent
two seasons in The Bristol & Avon League before joining The Bristol & District League
in 1983/84 Season. After two promotions in 9 seasons, the Reserves became Champions
of Division 4 in 1992/93. Ten years later, in 2003/04, the Championship of Division 3 was
attained. A Great run in the GFA Intermediate cup saw the side reach the final but
come runners-up to Soundwell Victoria the following Season. After finishing runners-up
and getting promoted in 2006/07 they go 1 better and become Champions of the Bristol
& District League Division 1 in 2007/08. The next seven seasons were spent yo-yoing
between the Senior Division and Division 1. Becoming Champions for a fourth time in
the Reserves history saw them win the Senior Division in 2015/16. The following season
was another success for the Reserves, when in their first season in The Premier Combi-
nation Division 1 they finished runners-up and were promoted to The Premier Combi-
nation. The first season in The Premier Combination saw “The Sods” leaving it late and
winning 5 of their last 6 games in a 15 day period, to finish in tenth place. 2018/19 Sea-
son saw the team finish in 11th place and remain in the Premier Combination, the high-
est league standing in the Reserves History.
