THANK YOU TO
TOOL DESIGN & MANUFACTURE LTD

OUR MAIN CLUB SPONSOR

Cover Photograph Courtesy Alex James.

Firstly I would like to say a massive thank you for welcoming my
team and myself to the club.

After agreeing to take the role, it was about assessing what
position we were in, players wise.
A lot of players had left through the summer and we knew this
was going to be total rebuild of the squad. We had a good chat
with the players who committed again and were keen to bring in
some of the U18s into the squad. We also looked at recruiting
players I’ve worked with before and after speaking to them we
decided to introduce them into rebuilding the squad.
We knew that pre season fitness wise was going to be tough but
the lads have worked extremely hard and really started to gel
together.
In the pre-season friendly’s we have started to get a lot of
positives from players, in what we want. But we know, to get
into full swing, this is going to take a few months, to be where
we want to be.
It’s important that we are in this league to compete and a mid
table position would be a
massive achievement from
everyone with no budget.
As we look to move the club
forward within the next few
years, we really need the sup-
port from local businesses and
individuals to make sure the
club is financially secure to
achieve these goals.

CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN HISTORY

In the summer of 1959 Cliff Phelps decided it was time football association was brought
back to the town. It had been six long years since the boys of the town had donned the
Blue & White of Sodbury in the Western League. After several meetings at The Bell Inn
(Now Brooks Bar & Kitchen) the new club was formed. Major L.M.Harris was Presi-
dent, Mr. E Purbrick Chairman, Mr. C Phelps Vice Chairman, Club Captain Dennis
Greenaway and Youth Captain Michael Boulton. In the initial 1959/60 season they en-
tered a senior team into The Dursley & Wotton League and a team into the Youth Sec-
tion. The following season Sodbury joined the Bristol and District League and through-
out the 60's remained in Division 3.

The 1970's began with relegation, when we finished bottom of Division 3 and the slump
continued in 1971/72 Season when finishing bottom of Division 4. The Mid 70's saw a few
changes and the ground work of the team today. Mike Fox became player Manager and
'The Sods' began a Sunday Side. In the 1976/77 Season, Sodbury finished third in Divi-
sion 5 and gained promotion. The 1978/79 Season saw us go one better and finished run-
ners-up of Division 4. To finish the decade off and celebrate twenty years of the club's
rebirth, we won the Championship of Division 3 in 1979/80.

The 1980's began were the 70's left off and a fourth place finish gave Sodbury promotion
to Bristol and District Division 1. 1981/82 saw the rebirth of our Reserve side and by the
end of the season, the 1st's had gained promotion to the Senior Division. From Division
5, to the Senior League in six seasons. The first season in the Senior division was mid-
table finish and the end of the season saw Mike Fox's testimonial and an Ashton Gate
appearance against Mangotsfield united. The following season we finished third. After
finishing 15th in 1985/86 we were relegated to Division 1, where we remained until fin-
ishing runners up in 1988/89.

The 1990's kicked off with a third place finish and promotion to the Bristol Premier
Combination Div 1. in 1990/91. The early 90's saw a new clubhouse and changing rooms
built with Players and Committee members contributing their trades. A fourth place
finish and the winning of the Premier cup in 1992/93 was the clubs best season so far.
The Sods remained in Division 1 until the end of the nineties, when they were promoted
to the Premier Division for the 1999/00 Season.

The 2000's and after 3 seasons in the Premier, the Sods were relegated at the end of
2001/02 season. A new manager and new era began in 2002/03. Les Underdown and his
Assistant Jeff Clark both ex-players with the club took over the reins. A mid table finish
in their first season, saw Les leave and left Jeff in the hot seat. The following season saw
another mid-table finish and the Reserves become Champions with the exciting players

now in the squad. 2004/05 ended in a disappointing third place but the club now had a
third team as well. The following season, the previous year was forgotten when the club
won the Championship and promoted back to the Premier division. A mid table finish in
the Premier division and the other 2 teams both winning promotion was a good season in
2006/07. 2007/08 became the clubs most successful season, when the first's won the
Championship of the Premier and the reserves Champions of Bristol & District division
1. The first season and a change of manager in the Gloucestershire county league and the
team finished bottom of the league, only winning 5 games. Even though the club finished
bottom, they were not relegated. Mark Stenner was appointed manager and he started
the steady march up the County league.

The 2010's has produced the club's most successful time in their history. Mark Stenner
had taken the team to a third place finish in the County league in 2010/11. After his de-
parture early the following season, Scott Gibson took over. A disappointing bottom place
finish was followed by two seasons of rebuilding and climbing the league. Karl Reese was
appointed new manager at the beginning of 2014/15 season and in his first season had
promoted the club from the County league to the dizzy heights of Western League foot-
ball with a third place finish. Not a bad start for the new gaffer but with some new faces
and playing great football, we went 1 better the following season and won the Western
League Division 1 Championship. 2016/17 and the Western League Premier division was
tough but a very creditable 13th position and competing in the F.A.Vase was our most
successful season so far. 2017/18 was going to be a massive mountain to climb. Karl had
left the club and also half the first team had departed to pastures new. Enter Neil Simons
our new gaffer, a season in the Western league to take on with half a team and to make
things a little more difficult, your first game is the clubs first ever game in the F.A.Cup.
The season ended with a 13th place finish, an FA Cup victory and a quarter final place
in the GFA Challenge trophy. Early in the 2018/19 Season Neil decided to leave the club
and shortly afterwards we appointed our present manager Joe White and his assistant
Steve. At the end of the season under his leadership, the club had finished 10th in the
Western League and had the best run in the FA cup in the clubs history. The club were
successful in their appeal against the Hellenic League, sideways move by the F.A. So
2019/20 season was in the Western League Premier. The uncertainty of which League we
would be playing in, unsettled the players and so several departed the Club before a ball
was kicked that Season. Three weeks before the season started the club also lost our
Manager and his Assistant. Justin Bishop & Scott Gibson took control of the 1st team as
Caretaker management and remained there until the League came to an abrupt halt.
The F.A. announced on 26th March 2020 that the Step 1-7 game and all grass-
roots football leagues and competition under its umbrella had ended, as a result of the
Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic. All results for the season would be expunged.

The 2020’s begin with Jeff Roberts and his team, Drew, Sean & Nick steering the 1st
Team.

But not disgraced by any means. The team that’s been grafted
together in a matter of weeks, did the Club proud. Two goals
from Kalum Youngsam and after 90mins it was 2 - 2. No Extra

The Ridings, we would have put them out but instead we were
defeated from the spot. Proud to be a SOD.

What’s “NEW” at The Ridings ?

At the beginning of recent seasons, we have been left in a little confusion
and chaos but the Covid19 Angel has been good to “The Sods” and sup-
plied us with buckets of “NEW”.
The 1st team have a NEW gaffer in Jeff Roberts who brings with him
three NEW wingmen, Drew, Sean and Nick and they have assembled an
exciting NEW squad.
The Ladies have a NEW manager and two NEW coaches and will be
playing in a NEW division.
The ‘A’ team will be competing in a NEW division. The Bristol & Dis-
trict Senior Division. Not a NEW division but a NEW division for them
and they are now playing at the highest level in this, their short 17 season
history.
We have a NEW U18 team, which will be playing on Sunday’s in The
Bristol U18 Combination. Brian Cook the NEW Manager has a large
squad of NEW lads, who hopefully will be the future of this Club.
And lastly…… The Club has a NEW Bar Manager in Diane and the
Clubhouse has NEW décor. Many hours have been put in by a small
band of people. Without these people our Club would not survive.

TAVISTOCK CLUB HISTORY

Adhoc football, a cross between rugby union and soccer and perhaps a few other games to boot, took
place between Plymouth and Tavistock sides from the mid 1870s, but it took a letter in the Tavistock
Gazette from scribes under the pseudonym of “Wei/wisher” and “Halfback”, to attract the attentions of
two local businessmen.

The club was thus founded on September 8th, 1888, the foundation year of the Devon County FA, when
sportsman and businessman Herbert Spencer summoned “interested persons to assemble at the
Guildhall where a committee was elected under the chairmanship of his brother, Wilfred, with Herbert
as his deputy and another brother, Kingsley, on the committee with Tom Owen Esq as secretary. The old
Tavistock Grammar School playing field in Russell Street hosted the newly formed club and the first
match against the Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry resulted in a 1–0 victory. The first AGM held at the old
Temperance Hotel, now the Ordulph Arms, proudly recorded a first season playing record of Won 13,
Lost 3 Drawn 1.
By 1890 the club adopted a strip of blue and old gold and formed a second team, moving two years later
to Green Lane, Torlands courtesy of the proprietor of the Bedford Hotel. Going from strength to strength
the team won the league and were cup runners up in 1900-1901. On one day in 1903 at Torlands on the
edge of Dartmoor, a game had to be abandoned due to a sudden blizzard. In the same year wild ducks
invaded a flooded penalty area and set up home for a week in a makeshift pond, resulting in a
postponed fixture. No wonder that over the next few years venues changed, from a return to the old
grammar school pitch, to Green Hill and Sandy Park. It is believed that in 1913 the entire Tavistock team
was selected to represent the County.
During the period of 1914-1918 structured football was abandoned.
Eventually there were at least three other clubs in the town, Tavistock Comrades, Bannawell Blues
United and Tavistock West End. Amalgamation in 1939 produced the familiar colours of red and black. A
welcome change to the salmon pink shirts with chocolate collars and cuffs of 1919. The years 1920 to
1930 were successful times with excellent results in the league, Bedford Cup and Senior Devon Cup.
Sadly the next decade saw a decline in both results and attendance. Play ceased at the end of the 1931-
32 season due to debt. Jumble sales and whist drives were held to ease the financial situation and
football resumed once more in 1937.
The onset of World War II put things on hold until 1945 when the Lambs joined the Plymouth
Combination League First Division. In 1947 the Club President Herbert Thomas Langsford purchased
Langsford Park, giving it under trust to the club in 1949. A carved commemorative stone serves as a
reminder of his benevolence.

In 1952 Tavistock joined the South Western League but were forced to withdraw in 1961 due to financial
embarrassment until re-joining in 1968.
The Club has been the birthplace of many players going on to enjoy professional pay-days in the Football
League including Harold Redmond and Danny Sullivan to Crystal Palace for a fee of £100, Neil and Peter
Langman to Plymouth Argyle, Mike Trebilcock, perhaps the most newsworthy footballer to have played
for Tavistock scored two of the three goals in the 1966 Cup Final in Everton’s 3–2 win over Sheffield
Wednesday. Robbie Pethick, Tavistock born and ex-player of the Club, signed professional forms for
Portsmouth in October 1993, where he had five successful seasons before moving to Bristol Rovers.
The Club won the Devon Premier Cup in season 2001-02 and repeated this success in season 2006-07, by
beating Upton Athletic by six goals to nil, creating a record winning margin in the final of this
competition.
In season 2005-06, the Club reached the last thirty-two in the FA Vase, going out to Pickering Town in a
very close encounter. The Club also entered the FA Cup for the first time since 1953-54.
Perhaps the saddest entry in this brief history of football in Tavistock is the fire of 3rd February 2011,
which all but saw the complete destruction of the old changing rooms and the Red & Black Clubhouse,
since then a rebuilding programme has seen the club rise from the ashes and achieve great things by

becoming the SWPL East Divisions Champions in 2014/15 and then SWPL Premier Division Champions in
2016/17.
Tavistock AFC also made SWPL history the following year by becoming the first club to win both the
SWPL Charity Vase and Bowl.
Success has continued and after being runners up to Plymouth Parkway in the SWPL Premier Division for
the 2017-18 season the Lambs won the league on the last day of the 2018/19 season, beating Plymouth
Argyle to gain promotion to the Toolstation Western League.

We can say that football is very much alive in Tavistock!

CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN RESERVES HISTORY

When Chipping Sodbury reformed in 1959/60 season, a Reserve team was formed and
entered the Dursley and Wotton League the following Season in 1960/61. The Reserves
then entered The Bristol & District League Division 6 the season after. The Reserves
stayed in the Bristol & District League through the 1960’s. The Present history of the
Reserves began in the 1981/82 season under manager John Beer. The Reserves spent
two seasons in The Bristol & Avon League before joining The Bristol & District League
in 1983/84 Season. After two promotions in 9 seasons, the Reserves became Champions
of Division 4 in 1992/93. Ten years later, in 2003/04, the Championship of Division 3 was
attained. A Great run in the GFA Intermediate cup saw the side reach the final but
come runners-up to Soundwell Victoria the following Season. After finishing runners-up
and getting promoted in 2006/07 they go 1 better and become Champions of the Bristol
& District League Division 1 in 2007/08. The next seven seasons were spent yo-yoing
between the Senior Division and Division 1. Becoming Champions for a fourth time in
the Reserves history saw them win the Senior Division in 2015/16. The following season
was another success for the Reserves, when in their first season in The Premier Combi-
nation Division 1 they finished runners-up and were promoted to The Premier Combi-
nation. The first season in The Premier Combination saw “The Sods” leaving it late and
winning 5 of their last 6 games in a 15 day period, to finish in tenth place. 2018/19 Sea-
son saw the team finish in 11th place and remain in the Premier Combination, the high-
est league standing in the Reserves History. In the 2019/20 season the F.A. announced
on 26th March 2020 that the Step 1-7 game and all grassroots football leagues and com-
petition under its umbrella had ended, as a result of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pan-
demic. All results for the season would be expunged.

THOUGHTS from LES THEOBALD RESERVES MANAGER

I am looking forward to this season and hopefully it will be completed.
It has been an exciting time leading up to this weekend. New players
joining the club, which is great for all the teams.
The reserves aspirations this season must be trying to stay out of an-
other relegation battle.
Last season Ian and I felt we had turned the corner by playing teams
off the park and starting to enjoy that winning feeling. The core of the
team is still here and together with the new players we hope to con-
tinue the good work from last season.
The first team have a new manager in Jeff Roberts who has already
shown the way forward by using 3 of last season’s under 18’s in his
squad. I believe there is more young talent to come through the ranks
of the club, coupled with experience players the club is heading in the
right direction to make Chipping Sodbury a force to be reckoned with
at all levels .The importance of getting off to a good start is paramount
to a good season. Like always it will down to the players commitment
and desire to play every week.

Finally I would like to wish the managers Jeff, Ricky, Mark . Steve,
Brian and Jake, all the very best for the seasn.

UTS - Les - Reserve Manager.

THOUGHTS from RICKY GRAY ‘A’ TEAM MANAGER

With expectation that players would come back, following the break
due to COVID having consumed to many cocktails and food from so-
cially distances BBQ’s, I was very impressed with their fitness and
attitudes, once the FA gave us permission to resume training.
They had taken the time to work on their fitness and came into our pre
season showing huge enthusiasm for the forthcoming season.
Our four friendly’s were against tough opposition and tested us at all
levels. However, we were able to come away with 4 wins, scoring 11
and conceding only 1 goal.
Whilst this gives us confidence, going into our first league game on
the 5th September, we cannot take anything for granted, as again we
have stepped up a standard, into the Bristol & District Senior League.
Any Manager would be wrong if we didn’t say that promotion is their
ultimate goal but come the end of the season we need to ensure we are
in the same league and anything after that is an ultimate bonus!
The A Team has a great squad of players, with a strong bond and Rich
and I cannot wait to experience a new league season with them.

“UP THE SOFA”!!!! (The A Team will know what I mean!)

Ricky - ‘A’ Team Manager.

We Would Like To Welcome
Brian Cook
The New U18’s Manager

I would firstly like to thank the CSTFC Committee for their warm welcome to myself and my players
as this will be our first season at the club. During last season it was always my ambition to bring my
Yate Utd U16 squad to CSTFC as a new U18’s side competing on a Sunday for the 2020/2021 season.
I have now assembled a strong squad consisting of approximately 50% of my old U16 side and 50%
new players which I am expecting to compete at the top of our division. The squad will take time to
gel together as would any new squad, but early signs are encouraging. I am looking forward to the
friendlies and our first league match, at home V Olveston on September 20th @ 2pm.
My longer-term ambition of course would be to see some of my players move through the adult
teams and play for the first team, this was my main reason for joining CSTFC to provide a pathway to
adult football for my players.
I look forward to seeing you all supporting the CSTFC U18’s Sunday team!
Many Thanks
Brian Cook
