FROM THE BOARDROOM
Firstly on behalf of CSTFC I would like to extend a warm welcome to all the players, officials and
supporters from Plymouth Parkway to The Ridings this afternoon for this Western League
Premier Division fixture.
Our visitors are in their second season in the Western League after moving across from the South-
West Peninsula League at the start of last season when they finished as runners up to Willand
Rovers. Earlier this season we were beaten 5 – 2 at Bolitho Park although with less than ten
minutes left the score was 3 – 2 and we were on top. Hopefully we can go one better than last
season’s 3 – 3 draw at The Ridings this afternoon. Parkway are currently in second place with a
game in hand on leaders Bradford Town who we visit next Saturday.
Last Tuesday’s result in the GFA Challenge Trophy was no real surprise as the Gaffer chose to rest
some of our key players as avoiding relegation has to be our main priority. It also provided us
with the opportunity to have a look at some of the younger and reserve team players at a higher
level.
The other teams in the relegation zone all lost last weekend so the gods were with us again and,
without wanting to show any favouritism, we hope it continues as we still have to play all the
relegation threatened teams again this season.
The weather still seems to be our biggest enemy with games still being called off at all levels, this
is a particular problem in the Western League with Our visitors today, Bitton and Bradford Town
still in the last sixteen with matches due to take place on Sat 8th Feb. We, at Sodbury, wish all
three clubs well in their matches. Both the Reserve and A teams are also well behind in their
fixtures and fixture congestion during April looks an unwelcome certainty.
Whilst we are on the subject of the weather and the continuing trend of a warmer and wetter
climate it does seem that the new development at the ground will include a 3 or 4G pitch to
appropriate standards to enable matches to take place at all levels of football, and to ensure that
assets are being used to their maximum potential.
Upcoming fixtures are:
Sat 1st Feb – Bradford Town (A)
Sat 8th Feb – Westbury Utd (A)
Sat 15th Feb – Cadbury Heath (H)
Sat 22nd Feb – Clevedon Town (H)
Tues 25th Feb – Shepton Mallett (H)
Come on you Sods
CHIPPING SODBURY TOWN HISTORY
In the summer of 1959 Cliff Phelps decided it was time football association was brought back to
the town. It had been six long years since the boys of the town had donned the Blue & White of
Sodbury in the Western League. After several meetings at The Bell Inn (Now Brooks Bar & Kitchen)
the new club was formed. Major L.M.Harris was President, Mr. E Purbrick Chairman, Mr. C Phelps
Vice Chairman, Club Captain Dennis Greenaway and Youth Captain Michael Boulton. In the initial
1959/60 season they entered a senior team into The Dursley & Wotton League and a team into the
Youth Section. The following season Sodbury joined the Bristol and District League and throughout
the 60's remained in Division 3.
The 1970's began with relegation, when we finished bottom of Division 3 and the slump continued
in 1971/72 Season when finishing bottom of Division 4. The Mid 70's saw a few changes and the
ground work of the team today. Mike Fox became player Manager and 'The Sods' began a Sunday
Side. In the 1976/77 Season Sodbury finished third in Division 5 and gained promotion. The
1978/79 Season saw us go one better and finished runners-up of Division 4. To finish the decade
off and celebrate twenty years of the club's rebirth, we won the Championship of Division 3 in
1979/80.
The 1980's began were the 70's left off and a fourth place finish gave Sodbury promotion to Bristol
and District Division 1. 1981/82 saw the rebirth of our Reserve side and by the end of the season,
the 1st's had gained promotion to the Senior Division. From Division 5 to the Senior League in six
seasons. The first season in the Senior division was mid-table finish and the end of the season saw
Mike Fox's testimonial and an Ashton Gate appearance against Mangotsfield united. The following
season we finished third. After finishing 15th in 1985/86 we were relegated to Division 1, where
we remained until finishing runners up in 1988/89.
The 1990's kicked off with a third place finish and promotion to the Bristol Premier Combination
Div 1. in 1990/91. The early 90's saw a new clubhouse and changing rooms built with Players and
Committee members contributing their trades. A forth place finish and the winning of the Premier
cup in 1992/93 was the clubs best season so far. The Sods remained in Division 1 until the end of
the ninties, when they were promoted to the Premier Division for the 1999/00 Season.
The 2000's and after 3 seasons in the Premier, the Sods were relegated at the end of 2001/02
season. A new manager and new era began in 2002/03. Les Underdown and his Assisstant Jeff
Clark both ex-players with the club took over the reigns. A mid table finish in their first season,
saw Les leave and left Jeff in the hot seat. The following season saw another mid-table finish and
the Reserves become Champions with the exciting players now in the squad. 2004/05 ended in a
disappointing third place but the club now had a third team as well. The following season, the
previous year was forgotten when the club won the Championship and promoted back to the
Premier division. A mid table finish in the Premier division and the other 2 teams both winning
promotion was a good season in 2006/07. 2007/08 became the clubs most successful season,
when the first's won the Championship of the Premier and the reserves Champions of Bristol &
District division 1. The first season and a change of manager in the Gloucestershire county league
and the team finished bottom of the league, only winning 5 games. Even though the club finished
bottom, they were not relegated. Mark Stenner was appointed manager and he started the steady
march up the County league.
The 2010's has produced the club's most successful time in their history. Mark Stenner had taken
the team to a third place finish in the County league in 2010/11. After his departure early the
following season, Scott Gibson took over. A disappointing bottom place finish was followed by
two seasons of rebuilding and climbing the league. Karl Reese was appointed new manager at the
beginning of 2014/15 season and in his first season had promoted the club from the County league
to the dizzy heights of Western League football with a third place finish. Not a bad start for the
new gaffer but with some new faces and playing great football, we went 1 better the following
season and won the Western League Division 1 Championship. 2016/17 and the Western League
Premier division was tough but a very creditable 13th position and competing in the F.A.Vase was
our most successful season so far. 2017/18 was going to be a massive mountain to climb. Karl had
left the club and also half the first team had departed to pastures new. Enter Neil Simons our new
gaffer, a season in the Western league to take on with half a team and to make things a little more
difficult, your first game is the clubs first ever game in the F.A.Cup. The season ended with a 13th
place finish, an FA Cup victory and a quarter final place in the GFA Challenge trophy. Early in the
2018/19 Season Neil decided to leave the club and shortly afterwards we appointed our present
manager Joe White and his assistant Steve. At the end of the season under his leadership, the club
had finished 10th in the Western League and had the best run in the FA cup in the clubs history.
The club were successful in their appeal against the Hellenic League, sideways move by the F.A. So
2019/20 season we will remain in the Western League Premier. This uncertainty of which League
we would be playing in, unsettled the players and so several departed the Club before a ball was
kicked this Season. Three weeks before the season started we also lost our Manager and his
Assistant. Scott Gibson & Justin Bishop are our Caretaker 1st team management team.

The previous encounter between the sides had been abandoned at half time
due to a freezing pitch but Lydney must have hoped for a positive outcome
this time round as they had been leading 4-1 before the game was called off
by the officials.
Sodbury were determined to show that the previous encounter was just a
fluke result and they made every effort to reverse the scoreline with some
excellent flowing football. Despite the Sods dominating possession it was
Lydney’s long ball tactics that resulted in the first goal on 14 minutes when
they took the lead following a speculative punt by the goalkeeper, which
caught the homes sides back four out. The Sods defence sat deeper after this
and dealt comfortably with any threat and Josh Pandolfino equalised 15
minutes later.
New signing Arnold Jarvis was introduced ten minutes before the break and
he made an immediate impact assisting with the Sods and Josh Pandolfino’s
second goal of the match to give the home side a 2-1 advantage at half time.
With defensive pairing Ben Ashpole and Jarnell Japi dealing decisively with
their opponents long ball tactics before the break Lydney switched from their
direct approach in the second half and began to pass the ball to good effect.
They were rewarded with an equaliser 15 minutes in when the referee gave a
free kick on the edge of the Sodbury box for a very doubtful handball.
(Where is VAR when you need it?)
Both sides worked hard for the remaining 30 minutes but it was Sodbury who
rued missing some excellent chances with Joe Stott in the home goal largely
untroubled for the entire half.
The U18s next fixture is at home to Tuffley Rovers on Wednesday 29 January,
7.30pm KO.

A contender for goal of the season was all that separated the sides at
the break with both sides unable to secure a foothold in a half that
offered much endeavour but little if any entertainment for the on
looking supporters. On 13 minutes Exmouth’s Jordan Harris spotted
that Archie Watts in the home goal was on the edge of his area and
with a quick look up he lobbed the keeper from 40 yards out. Up until
that point and for the remainder of the first half the teams were
evenly matched with defences largely on top.
Third placed Exmouth Town came into this league tie with a run of four
straight wins and they were quick to add to their lead in the second
half when just two minutes in Harris scored his second with a 20 yard
deflected shot that left Watts stranded. With Exmouth on the front
foot Jimmy Hinds added a third three minutes later when he was
unchallenged at a corner to give his side an unassailable lead.
Despite the introduction of most of their substitutes the Sods were
unable to break down a well drilled Exmouth defensive line and the
score remained unchanged.

THE HISTORY OF PLYMOUTH PARKWAY
The club was originally formed in 1988 when a group of players left the youth
team Plymouth Kolts and joined the Plymouth & District League in Division 4.
In that same year the club secured sponsorship from Exeter Airport, and as
part of that deal they changed their name to Ex-Air Flyers. They were the first
club in Plymouth to be sponsored from outside the city limits. The club
colours of yellow and blue are from the colours of the airport logo and
remain the same today.
In their first season the club gained promotion and then moved the Parkway
Sports Club. The club carried on to be promoted in successive seasons until it
reached Division one and was waiting to join the Premier Division when the
Devon League was formed in 1992. The club decided to apply to become
members of the Devon League instead as the Parkway Sports Club had
sufficient facilities to join the league. The club was accepted into the league
but the club had to change its name so they become known as EAF Plymouth
FC.
Before the 1993–94 season the Sports Club offered a number of extra
facilities and help to the club, so the club changed their name to Plymouth
Parkway FC. Five seasons later in 1998 the club left the Devon league to join
the South Western League. On the eve of the 2000–01 season the club
became homeless with the loss of the Parkway Sports Club due to a
disagreement over the terms of the lease and subsequent maintenance costs.
As a result, and with special permission from the league, the club spent that
season having to play all of its games away from home. During their build up
to the 2001/02 season the club announced they would be developing an area
of Manadon as their new ground, to be known as Bolitho Park. While work
was being completed, with controversial assistance from Plymouth City
Council, they used The Brickfields athletics ground in Devonport, before they
moved to their new and current home in August 2003.
In the 2006–07 season the club entered the FA Vase for the first time, making
it to the second qualifying round in their first attempt. A season later the
club became founding members of the South West Peninsula League, when
the South Western Football League and the Devon County Football League
merged.
The identity of the football club has been built on the drive to improve and
progress on and off the pitch! Having spent nearly 20 years in the South
Western leagues, at the end of the 2015/16 campaign the club’s officials
decided that they wanted to put a plan together to move even further up the
football pyramid. In order to achieve that goal, it was identified that
Plymouth Parkway as a business were missing a few things. Subsequently, it
was a busy summer before the 2016/17 season – the result of which
Plymouth Parkway merged with another ambitious Plymouth football club
formally named as Bar Sol Ona! Bar Sol Ona, who were challenging for
promotion in the Plymouth and District Premier Division at the time, became
Plymouth Parkway’s reserve team and moved to the East Cornwall Premier
League Division One. Their under 18’s became Plymouth Parkway’s under
18’s. Off the pitch, Bar Sol Ona’s Chairman, Mark Russell, became the new
Chairman of Plymouth Parkway and their first team manager, Andy Notman,
became Parkway’s General Manager. Plymouth Parkway’s former Chairman,
Jim Parsons, became Club President and former General Manager, Gez
Baggott, became the Vice President! The merger and the new faces brought
with it a fresh drive and ambition for the club to progress – not to mention
stronger financial capabilities. The six members of the board (including long-
term Club Secretary Genny Turner and Treasurer Brian Martin) made their
intentions known immediately by applying for promotion to the Toolstation
Western Football League.
Following an outstanding season in 2017-18 which saw Plymouth Parkway
promoted as League Champions of the SWPL, losing just one game during the
season.
2018/2019 was another fantastic season for Parkway, which commenced
their first campaign within the Western League. The season proved to be
nearly as good as the previous year, as we finished runners up in the League
and Devon St Luke’s Bowl but winning the coveted Les Phillips League Cup.

CHIPPING SODBURY RESERVES HISTORY
When Chipping Sodbury reformed in 1959/60 season, a Reserve team was formed and
entered the Dursley and Wotton League the following Season in 1960/61. The Reserves
then entered The Bristol & District League Division 6 the season after. The Reserves
stayed in the Bristol & District League through the 1960’s. The Present history of the
Reserves began in the 1981/82 season under manager John Beer. The Reserves spent two
seasons in The Bristol & Avon League before joining The Bristol & District League in
1983/84 Season. After two promotions in 9 seasons, the Reserves became Champions of
Division 4 in 1992/93. Ten years later, in 2003/04, the Championship of Division 3 was
attained. A Great run in the GFA Intermediate cup saw the side reach the final but come
runners-up to Soundwell Victoria the following Season. After finishing runners-up and
getting promoted in 2006/07 they go 1 better and become Champions of the Bristol &
District League Division 1 in 2007/08. The next seven seasons were spent yo-yoing be-
tween the Senior Division and Division 1. Becoming Champions for a fourth time in the
Reserves history saw them win the Senior Division in 2015/16. The following season was
another success for the Reserves, when in their first season in The Premier Combination
Division 1 they finished runners-up and were promoted to The Premier Combination.
The first season in The Premier Combination saw “The Sods” leaving it late and winning
5 of their last 6 games in a 15 day period, to finish in tenth place. 2018/19 Season saw the
team finish in 11th place and remain in the Premier Combination, the highest league
standing in the Reserves History.
