Where I’m From Joanna Pena-Avila
I am from boiling beans and the smell of coffee grounds early in the morning
I am from flashing carnival rides lights as I sit in traffic to “Move you idiot!”
I am from, “There’s no milk” to eating Froot Loops with orange soda
I am from the flooded waters of the cherry creek reservoir,
That placed granular sand in between my toes.
I am from reality and not make believe
From worrying about a clean house and not daydreaming colorful unicorns
I am from, “Sister” to “Mommy”
I am from tears, that placed a hold on life
I am from “I love you mija”
To “Can you see me dad? I really need and miss you”
I am from, “You mean nothing to this family,” to, “I need you.”
I am from happiness of a gold hearted kid to a lost broken adult
I am from memories I can never get back.
I am from “Why me.”
