Presentation

St. Finn Barr Catholic School in collaboration with
the San Francisco Department of Public Health and
the Archdiocesan Department of Catholic Schools

has created the following framework for the
reopening of school. All contents are subject to
change in deference to local, state, and federal

mandates.

Approved by the Archdiocesan
Department of Catholic Schools
as of Tuesday, July 28th and will
be published to our school site

on Thursday, July 30th.

Our Goal
Our top priority continues to be meeting the spiritual, academic,
physical, and emotional needs of every child entrusted to our
care while ensuring the safety of our community.

Preparing 1. A hybrid model where some of the
Specifically for learning occurs on campus and some
Two Models occurs from home (or families choose
to learn solely from home).

2. An upgraded remote-only learning
model should local, state or federal
mandates require at-home learning.

Remote-Only Learning Model

As of, Thursday, July 23rd, all
Catholic Schools in San Francisco

will begin the 2020-2021
academic year remotely.

What we learned from last year:

● Students and families did a remarkable job of transitioning to a remote model of learning
● Teachers were able to create consistency while also considering the well-being of students
● Students did not fall behind → teachers made sure to teach the standards so students could still

reach mastery
● Teachers learned ways to improve the schooling experience whether students learn remotely, in

a hybrid model, or physically together.
● We have strengthened our Remote Learning Program in response to student and parent

feedback along with professional development opportunities.

Kindergarten What will this look like?
First and Second Grade
Third through Fifth Grade Teachers took each level into
consideration while creating a
robust plan for remote learning this

school year.

Hybrid Model: Reducing the Number of Students on Campus

Plan for when we are allowed to return to campus.

Cohort A Cohort B Cohort C

Alternating Mondays* Alternating Mondays* Choose to stay home and
Tuesday and Wednesday Thursday and Friday participate in 100% remote
learning/livestreaming during
the first trimester of school.

*Alternating Mondays are optional. If your family chooses to remote learn on Mondays only,
students will be expected to participate in livestream lessons.

Families MUST choose if they will do Remote Mondays before the school year begins.

Cohorts

St. Finn Barr will create stable cohorts in order to limit transmission. Staff rotations between cohorts will also be minimized
in order to maintain stable cohorts. Rosters that identify student composition of all cohorts will be available to every
teacher. Cohorts will remain in their designated classrooms unless they are attending recess or PE.

The purpose of the stable cohorts is to limit the number of students on campus each day of school so that we can ensure
every student has 6 feet of space for social distancing.

Teachers who rotate between cohorts will go directly to the teaching area at the front of the room, which will be sanitized
before the previous teacher leaves the space.

Cohorts

Families will receive their cohort assignments on Monday, August 10th.

Please note that while we work to place students in cohorts of the families’
choosing, our top priority is to ensure siblings are in the same cohort and
that we balance classrooms in terms of number, gender balance, etc.

What will We have invested in technology that will

students who are learning from home.

Additionally, students will have the
opportunity to interact with peers during
certain lessons since we will set up the
classroom in a way that allows the
students to join Zoom and work from
home or class while they are fully
engaged in the same lesson at the same
time.

Entrance Protocol (Driving) FIRST GRADE ONLY

K, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8

Driving Instructions

Families are required to complete a health screening with a faculty/staff member prior to dropping their student off. In order
to ensure easy flow of traffic, parents and students are required to drive eastward on Hearst Avenue and pull up to the curb
next to the West Gate or the East gate. Students will remain in their car until directed by staff/faculty to go directly to their
classroom. Students who do not pass the health screening will not be allowed out of the car.

Entrance Protocol (Walking)

Students who walk to school, will stand behind a designated line until
they are called by a faculty/staff member for their health check. All
students will wait in the designated area and will stand six feet apart in
the line on the sidewalk. If parents walk with their child(ren) to school,
they will need to wait with their child(ren) until their child(ren) is cleared
to proceed into the classroom. If a student walks to school without a
parent/guardian and symptoms are observed, the student will be moved
to the “Isolation Room” which is the conference room next to the main
office, where they will remain until picked up.

Entrance Protocol

At the assigned check station, students can expect to:

- Remain in the car or stand 6 feet apart if they walk
- Wear their mask*
- Complete a questionnaire by answering questions asked by a staff member

If they are clear to enter the school, students will:

- Sanitize their hands before entering the school gate
- Go directly to their classroom

- Teachers will be at their doors to admit students.
- Go directly to their assigned seats

Parents/caregivers are not allowed on campus and will be asked to say their “goodbyes” to their child(ren) before they exit the car

*In a case where a mask is not present, one will be provided for the student.

Health Screening Questions

1. Do you or your child live with anyone or have you or your child had close
contact with anyone with a prolonged cough, fever, flu-like symptoms, or been
diagnosed with COVID-19 within the last 14 days?

2. Do you or your child live with anyone or do you or your child have a fever,
cough, and/or shortness of breath? For children and adults, fever is 100.4
degrees.

3. Do you or your child live with anyone or do you or your child have any other
signs of communicable illness such as a cold, flu, rash, or inflammation?

4. Do you or your child live with anyone or have you or your child experienced
diarrhea or vomiting (within the past 24 hours)?

Entrance Protocol

If you miss your window for coming on campus, you will be directed to either wait until 8:45 to enter or
you can choose to go home to participate in Remote Learning.

Student Procedures for Entering the Building

Once a health screening has been conducted and students enter the building they will:

● Walk directly to their classroom
● Use hand sanitizer at the door
● Sit at their desk which will be in a designated and marked 6 x 6 foot area of space
● Unpack their belongings which will stay in their 6 x 6 foot area of space

Additional Supplies Students Need for Reopening

● Each student will keep their supplies at their own desk. Students will not
share any school supplies, materials, or toys.

● Students will be encouraged to have two sets of necessary supplies: one for
school use and one for home use. Books can travel between home and
school daily.

● Students will bring their own water bottle(s) to school to avoid the use of
water faucets. Students will not be able to fill their bottle during the day.

● Due to the safety of students, it is recommended that students bring a water
bottle with a straw so that the straw can fit beneath the mask without
adjusting it by hand.

● Students should bring their own supply of tissues with one ziplock bag for
dirty tissues as well as hand sanitizer to reduce time out of their space and
diminish opportunities for students to congregate in one area.

Planning for Social Distancing
Outside of the Classroom

Visitor Policy

No visitors will be allowed on campus including parents until it is deemed
appropriate. The office administrator will be available via phone or email. If
students forget their lunch, parents may drop the lunch bag on the bench next to
the gate. The office administrator will wipe the bag down with a sanitizing wipe
before bringing the lunch bag into the building and the lunch bag will be
dropped off at the door of the student’s classroom.

School Gatherings

All gatherings of large groups are prohibited on campus. Therefore, any gathering such as Back
to School Night, Parent Board or Room Parent Meetings, faculty meetings, and school
assemblies will be held virtually via Zoom.

Closed Communal Spaces

The hall will be closed for school lunches. If students purchase lunch from the lunch program, a
pre-packaged lunch will be delivered directly to the classroom.

Extended Care

There will be no Extended Care for the duration of the First Trimester since we are prohibited
from mixing cohorts on campus.

Sports

All extracurricular athletic programs are on hold until CYO resumes athletic leagues. St. Finn Barr
will follow the CYO and San Francisco Department of Public Health timeline for re-opening when
possible.

Key Message for Schools

● Exposure risk is a gradient, rather than an all-or-nothing condition.

○ A rule of thumb is that a person must spend at least 10-15 minutes
within 6 feet of someone with COVID-19 to be at risk of infection.

○ Shorter interactions at greater distances lower risk.

○ Universal face coverings decrease risk, and being outside is lower
risk than inside.

○ Other factors include whether the infected person was sneezing or
coughing, or doing an activity that produced more respiratory
droplets (not talk < quiet conversation < loud talking < singing).

● Coronavirus is easy to kill compared to norovirus. Most household
cleaning products are effective. (We will use cleaning materials
approved by the EPA.)

Key Message for Schools
● Remember that the virus must get into a person’s nose, mouth or eyes to
cause infection.
○ To get COVID-19 from touching a contaminated surface, a person
must first get the virus on their hands, and then touch their eyes,
nose or mouth with their hands. Frequent hand washing breaks the
chain of transmission.
○ Sanitizing stations will be set up in each classroom and teachers
will teach students how to properly wash their hands.
○ SFB will send home a document that will explain the importance of
hygiene and how you can practice these habits with your child(ren)
before they return to school.

Taken from SFDPH Reopening TK-12 Schools for In-Person, On-Site Instruction Preliminary Guidance for School Year 2020-2021

Notification of Exposure

When a student shows signs of COVID-19

● Identify isolation rooms for students with symptoms of COVID-19.
● Students with symptoms should be sent home. Students should not return to school until they have met the criteria in “COVID-19

Health Checks at Programs for Children and Youth.”
● Keep students who are waiting to be picked up in a designated isolation room, preferably in an area where others do not enter or

pass. Make sure that students should keep their face coverings on.
● When a parent or guardian arrives to pick up a student, have the student walk outside to meet them if possible instead of allowing the

parent or guardian into the building. Since most children with COVID-19 are infected by a parent or other adult in their home, the
parent may also have COVID-19.
● Find alternative locations for classes whose regular classroom is being cleaned or disinfected.
● Open windows in areas used by the sick person to maximize outdoor air circulation. Close off those areas as soon as feasible, until
they can be cleaned and disinfected.

Taken from SFDPH Reopening TK-12 Schools for In-Person, On-Site Instruction Preliminary Guidance for School Year 2020-2021

When a staff member or student tests positive for COVID-19

● Contact the Archdiocesan Department of Catholic Schools and San Francisco Department of Public Health as soon as possible.
● ADCS and SFDPH will help the school determine if the classroom, cohort, or school needs to be closed. Schools with smaller and

more contained cohorts are less likely to require school-wide closure.
● Work with ADCS and SFDPH to identify individuals who had close contact with the person with COVID-19.
● Exposed individuals or their families should be notified, know how to get tested, and understand when they or their child can

return to school, usually 14 days after the exposure.
● Notify all school staff, families, and students that an individual in the school has had confirmed COVID-19. Do not disclose the

identity of the person as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act.
● Open windows in areas used by the sick person to maximize outdoor air circulation. Close off those areas as soon as feasible,

until they can be cleaned and disinfected.
