“...and don’t forget that soup is the people’s dish. Hungry
families all over the world put their few scraps of food in a
pot and call it soup. A weak essense of cabbage or turnip
kept thousands of people alive during the war. It’s well to
think of these things once in a while as we sit down to the
plentiful meals of the USA.” -CBF

Philadelphia Bulletin, Jun 2, 1949

Crystal Bird Fauset lived in this three story 5401-03 Vine Street, Philadelphia, PA
brick townhouse between 1933 to 1944. It
was built as a single home in the Victorian
Italianate style, at 54th and Vine Streets in
the Haddington section of West Philadelphia,
between 1872 and 1878. A marker was
placed by the Pennsylvania Historical and
Museum Commission in 1991.

Mission Statement: Crystal Bird Fauset Institute is an 501(c)3 designated educational and historical organization

which promotes awareness in policy making decisions that affect minority communities in Pennsylvania. Through
education, information, and participation in the community based environment we will promote sustainability creating a
viable, and politically aware community.

Vision Statement: To involve communities in civic engagement to maintain an educated and politically aware

community.

The CBF Institute promotes its mission and vision through these projects:

Citizens for the Future. Develop strategies and programs to promote civic engagement in African American

communities through civics education for youth and adults, voter registration and education, and community forums. We
also serve as a resource center to encourage Black women to run for public office.

Crystal Bird Fauset Legacy Exhibit celebrating Fauset as the first Black women to be elected to a State Legislature

in 1938 and her long forgotten achievements before and after that. Images and artifacts of her legacy will be exhibited in a
dedicated space in the home.

The Political Black Women’s Memorial of Pennsylvania The memorial celebrates the work and lives of black

women elected or appointed to positions in the three branches of government of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with
a portrait gallery and landscaped garden.

Political Black Women’s Archives and Registry This project will consolidate pertinent information on past and

current elected, appointed and activist political Black women from community grassroots to the executive level who
dedicated their lives to the service of their communities. The collection will include campaign materials and memorabilia
and incorporate a comprehensive database and library.

Crystal Bird Fauset Distinguished Service Award This distinguished service award was established a to recognize

women of African descent, currently in an elected or appointed position in one of the three branches of Pennsylvania
government, who exhibit outstanding and distinguished achievements in public service.

Historic Crystal Bird Fauset House Rehabilitation This project entails restoring all windows and replacing all wood

trim with PVC lumber. The nonprivate areas of the facility will be used for administrative functions, classes, meetings, a
gallery of Black political art and incubator for engagement ideas. Our Row House Organic Gardening project uses the flat
roofs for gardening using a hybrid method of hydroponics and containers.
