Snapshot into Summer 2016

2016 International Business Pedagogy Workshops
June 2–5, 2016 in Atlanta, GA

Over 85 participants from 14 countries and 57 institutions gathered for the 2016
International Business Pedagogy Workshops hosted by the GSU CIBER at the
GSU Buckhead Center on June 2-5. The event focused on teaching and
pedagogy with a thoughtful line up of plenaries and workshops led by some of
the leading international business faculty in the nation and abroad.
New this year were three plenary sessions: Instructional Technology and
Resources for Teaching International Business, Insights from Master
Teachers, and Designing and Teaching the Introductory IB Course. Also new
this year was a poster session, allowing participants to share their classroom
innovations and experiments.
Workshops were designed to assist business faculty improve their practical
knowledge and skills for teaching international business. Participants chose
from the following thematic workshops to attend: Introduction to International
Business, International Management, International Financial Management,
Global Supply Chain Management, and International Marketing. The event
allowed for inspiration, networking, and learning.

2016 CIMaR Conference

The 2016 CIMaR Conference was hosted by Xi'an Jiaotong University in
China. Nearly 100 participants from Canada, China, Europe, Japan, Hong
Kong, Taiwan, and the United States enjoyed a professional experience full of
academic exchanges, thought-provocative brain-storming, best teaching
practices, and wonderful social events.

The CIMaR Annual conferences will continue to be great events for scholars
and practitioners in the realm of international marketing and international
business, while the 2016 Xi'an conference will definitely be the one existing in
our memories for years to come.

The 2017 annual meeting will be held in Florence, Italy, under the auspices of
University of Florence, Italy.

Cavusgil visited GSU’s partner universities in Turkey.

In April 2016, Dr. Cavusgil visited GSU’s partner universities in Turkey, held
discussions on ongoing collaborations, and also made several research
presentations. In particular, he spoke to young executives enrolled in the Brand
Practitioners Master’s program jointly offered by Sabanci University and the
Turkish Advertising Foundation.

New Ph.D. Graduates:

Dr. Ayse Ozturk as well as Dr. Ozlem Tuba Koc, who were Ph.D. candidates
sponsored by GSU-CIBER, successfully defended their Ph.D. dissertations and
graduated from the program.
Ayse is now a research associate at GSU-CIBER. Currently, Tuba works as an
instructor of marketing at Leeds School of Business, University of Colorado
Boulder.

GSU Title VI Centers Collaboration for
World Languages Day

World Languages Day, cosponsored by GSU-CIBER, was hosted by the
Center for Urban Language Teaching and Research (CULTR) of Georgia State
University on September 19th, 2016. The event welcomed over 400 high school
students and provided them opportunities to

 meet leaders in international commerce, social services, and
government agencies with global connections,

 explore language-related professions and the language skills that
employers seek,

 discover resources for language learning.

Meet Our New Visiting Scholars

Ayse Akyol
Ayse Akyol is currently working as a Professor of Marketing in the Department
of Business Administration, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences,
at Trakya University, Turkey. She received BA degree in Business from Dokuz
Eylul University, Turkey (1990); MA degree in Human Resources Management
from Istanbul University, Turkey (1996); MSc degree in Research and
Consultancy and a Ph.D. BA degree in Business from Dokuz Eylul University,
Turkey (1990); MA degree in Human Resources Management from Istanbul
University, Turkey (1996); MSc degree in Research and Consultancy and a
Ph.D. degree in Marketing both from the University of Portsmouth, UK (2000).
She also worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of South
Florida, USA (2005). Her research interests are international marketing,
marketing research, and contemporary issues in marketing.

Gabriel Vouga Chueke
Gabriel Vouga Chueke is the founder and coordinator of the Brazilian
Multinationals Observatory sponsored by ESPM, a research center engaged in
generating and disseminating knowledge about Brazilian FDI worldwide.
Gabriel holds a Master in International Management by ESPM (Brazil) and will
receive his Ph.D. in business from the University of Sao Paulo (Brazil). Gabriel
was an MBA exchange student at the University of Chicago, and he is a Global
Mindset Facilitator through the Thunderbird School of Global
Management. His research interests include emerging market multinationals,
host-country institutional environment, and entry mode strategy.

New Faces at GSU-CIBER

Ayse Ozturk, Research Associate
Ayse Ozturk joined CIBER at Georgia State University as a Research Associate
in August 2016. Ayse received her Ph.D. in Marketing with a minor in
International Business from the Robinson College of Business in May 2016. Her
research interests lie in marketing strategy, global marketing, emerging
markets, and marketing analytics. Her doctoral dissertation focuses on
examining the global convergence of consumer spending across international
markets and identifying its implications on market shares of firms. Her
research has appeared in International Business Review and Thunderbird
International Business Review. Prior to her doctoral studies, Ayse earned a
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Galatasaray University,
Turkey and two M.S. degrees in Marketing and Managerial Sciences from
Georgia State University. She also worked with globally recognized companies
including PricewaterhouseCoopers, Deloitte, and Peugeot.

Isabella Pagsisihan, Student Assistant
Isabella serves as a student assistant for CIBER. Her tasks include providing
administrative aid to the faculty and staff of the center. She is a current
undergrad at Georgia State University and is majoring in nursing.
