Welcome
September 8, 2022
Dear Friends of Les Passees,
Welcome to Stock Exchange 2022! We are thrilled to begin the 36th annual upscale
“popup” consignment store to support the children and families in our community.
Les Passees is a women’s volunteer organization with 400+ members which has
been serving the Memphis community for 111 years. We are proud to continue this
labor of love. And what a testimony this is for our volunteers who spend well over
5,000 service hours each year to operate Les Passees Stock Exchange. e proceeds
of Stock Exchange support Kids on the Block, Harwood Center and other local
organizations supporting children.
I love everything about Les Passees Stock Exchange, from the monumental e ort to
acquire a location, greet the consignors and tag merchandise to opening the store
each day to shoppers and neighbors. From August through October, the army of Les
Passees volunteers work tirelessly to ensure that the business operates successfully.
You will nd new treasures every day as consignors continually bring new items.
Vignettes and display areas provide a showcase for our customers.
As Judy Ashby, a Les Passees past President says “giving and receiving can be
spread from person to person by practicing kindness and showing generosity to
others.” e contagious and energetic spirit of Les Passees is evident throughout
Stock Exchange. We thank you, our sponsors, donors, advertisers, consignors and
customers for your generous giving and your kind hearts as we begin another Les
Passees Stock Exchange.
We sincerely appreciate your support.

OUR MISSION
Through the art of puppetry, Les Passees
Kids on the Block seeks to educate, celebrate
individuality, and inspire young people within
our community.
OUR HISTORY
Kids on the Block is an award-winning
international program. The program was
initially developed in 1977 in direct response
to US Public Law 94-142 which required that
children with special needs should be educated
in the least restrictive environment.
For the majority of these students, this meant
leaving the security of their special education
classrooms and enrolling in classrooms with
their peers. To make the transition smoother,
KOTB programs shared the belief that we are
all the same inside and even if we must do
things differently, we can all achieve our goals!
Les Passees Kids on the Block chapter began in
the 1980s. Les Passees KOTB reaches 25,000
Mid-South Area youth every year.
OUR KIDS
Stepping into a performance by the Les Passees
Kids on the Block, it is quickly apparent that
these puppet voices resonate with their youth
based audience. The child-sized puppets talk
about their hopes and dreams and let their
personalities show while they air their troubles:
social issues that affect today’s children. Their
frank dialogue is part of a proven national
and
combating peer pressure.

For the
Love of Silver
By Barbara Hvasta
My love for silver began as a young child and
memories of my grandmother. Grandmother
was a very elegant Southern hostess and
vacations to her home meant sitting on
her beautiful eggplant colored velvet sofa
and admiring her shiny sterling silver tea
set. Holiday gatherings signaled time with
extended family, all the cousins, and using the
“good” silver, china and crystal, even at the
“children’s table.” In a scrapbook, I have a
treasured newspaper article with a picture of
my grandmother serving coffee from her silver
service.
Years later, during college summer breaks
and during the holidays, I worked at Brodnax
Jewelers in Memphis. Learning the silver,
china and crystal patterns, along with how to
coordinate different pieces, further spurred
my passion for pretty serving pieces and
collectibles. Over time, I began to look
for ways to incorporate sterling silver and
silverplate items into everyday life and not
just during the holidays. An antique toast rack
holds mail on my desk and I have repurposed
a silver cracker holder to hold writing pens.
A silver wine holder has made a great orchid
planter and a Revere bowl is the perfect
container to display hydrangea blooms.
You can vary the pieces for summer plants,
poinsettias for the holidays, and for spring,
eggs and a bird. For upscale tailgating, a large

member or memorable purchase, I encourage
you to think of ways to use them every day and
search the internet for ideas.
Whether you are looking for sterling silver
or silver plate, the opportunity to spot a new
collectible is part of the fun during Les Passees’
annual Stock Exchange fund raiser. As a Les
Passees volunteer, it is exciting to see all the
beautiful pieces arriving every day throughout
the event.
Sterling Silver
or Silver Plated
There are different types of silver including
international silver. When silver is mixed with
other metals, it becomes an alloy. Copper is
usually used because it is quite durable. Sterling
silver is commonly referred to as 925, meaning
it is 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals. Most
sterling silver is stamped with a hallmark
indicating the purity of the silver (like 925), the
mark of the silversmith or manufacturer. Some
people use a strong magnet to help determine if a
piece is sterling silver. Silver has weak magnetic
effects and a magnet will usually not stick
strongly.
When shopping for silver, carry a soft white
cloth. Rub it on the piece like you were
polishing it. If no black comes off, it’s probably
not silver. To be certain, check with an appraiser
or silversmith to check the authenticity of the
piece.
When a base metal is covered with a thin silver
layer, it is referred to as silver-plated. Over
time with use and polishing, the base metal will
become exposed. Another way to spot silver-
you see another metal underneath the silver, it is
plated or overlayed.
