Welcome

Hey stranger!
I want to extend a warm welcome to you, no matter who you are. Whether you’re a
Galilee regular or here for the first time. Whether you’re a cradle Christian or a spiritual
explorer. Whether you’re a political progressive or a rock-ribbed Republican, a Redskin
fan or a Cowboy supporter!
We’re all different, but we’re all loved by God.
Reaching out to people who are different from ourselves, extending helping hands in
hurting times, these are BRIDGES that we can cross together.
Paul’s second letter to Timothy speaks of virtues that serve to connect people: persever-
ance, faithfulness, grace, the willingness to work together. These are themes that we are
going to explore in October’s worship series, “Bridges: Bringing People Together.”
Are you with me? Let’s cross some bridges together in worship.

Small Group will meet Nov. 7, 21, Dec. 5, 19
Led by Heather Cox

together create the recipes included with the devotionals.

Sundays: Sunday Small Group

Led by Chris Richter

Tales from the Madhouse – This series imagines discussions with minor characters
in the New Testament: people who encountered Jesus, had the opportunity to be
transformed through him, and – for their own reasons – chose to pass. More broadly,
these vignettes will allow us to explore those things in our own lives, world, and
selves that can keep us from embracing the life God has set aside for us.

Monday Women’s Evening Group

Led by Mary Ann Myers & Jenny Castle
6:30pm - Adult Flex
Join us for dinner and study.

Me, Myself, and Lies: A Thought Closet Makeover - Bible Study Book by Jennifer Rothschild
provides a personal study experience five days a week plus viewer guides for the group
video sessions of this women’s Bible study that encourages them to clean out the junk in
their minds and replace hidden negative thoughts with positive truths from God’s word.
Words are powerful. Especially the words women speak to themselves. All too often, what
they say to themselves when they lie in bed at night or look in the mirror in the morning
is not even close to the words God wants them to speak to their souls. According to
Rothschild, what we think about often has a ripple effect on nearly every area of our lives.

At Galilee Church, we offer regular, intentional
opportunities for people to grow in faith. We strive to
prepare people of all ages for a deeper relationship
with God. Our greatest tool for growth is the small
group, where people come together to study the
word and build understanding, faith, and strong
relationships. Our small groups are open to everyone
at any time. Feel free to drop in when you are able to
see if a group is the right fit for you.

Often we make a mess of our lives and wonder if there is any
redemption. In this book, pastor and author Tom Berlin helps us
see our mess through the eyes of Christ to find redemption and
restoration. Using Scripture, devotional tools, and the writings of
Ignatius of Loyola, John of the Cross, St. Augustine, John Wesley,
Evelyn Underhill, and others, Berlin encourages reflection and meditation through
our own brokenness. Only then can we focus on the cross as the place where we
truly surrender control, leave our mess, and find redemption.

Thursday Morning Sisters in Christ Study Group

Led by Nancy Epperson
10:00am - Adult Flex
1st & 3rd Thursdays of the month
September-November we will study John Ortberg’s “Soul Keeping
- Caring for The Most Important Part of You”.
Anxiety. Depression. Fear. Loneliness. These are all symptoms of a
soul that has lost touch with its source of life. Like a flower snipped from the vine,
the soul that is not turned toward God can only wither away.
In Soul Keeping, bestselling author John Ortberg sheds light on the most overlooked,
underrated, and least-understood part of your being. With a workable and relevant
approach, he shows how living the “with God” life isn’t just a good idea--it’s the
only way to find lasting peace and satisfaction.

Stephen Ministers are known as the After People.
Stephen Ministers are there:

...after the phone call you hoped you’d never get.
...after the funeral, when everyone has left and the
emotions you’ve held at bay come crashing in on you.
....after the relationship falls apart and the bottom falls out of your life.
...after the doctor says, “I’m sorry, but there’s nothing more we can do.”

...after the nursing home director shakes your hand and says,
“Welcome to your new home.”

...after the last child honks the horn, waves, and drives away
—and the house suddenly seems empty.

...after the gavel comes down, the handcuffs go on,
and your loved one is led away.

...after the baby arrives, demanding more of you than you ever dreamed possible.
...after you find a pink slip with your final paycheck.

...after your family and friends have heard your story one too many
times, but you still need to talk it out.

Stephen Ministers are the After People. They are ready to come alongside you—or
your friends, neighbors, coworkers, or relatives—and provide comfort and support
for as long after as needed. If you feel you or someone you know would benefit
from having a Stephen Minister please email:[email protected]
or call the church office, 703-430-2203.

Answers to the Most Frequent
Questions about Stephen Ministry®

• What are Stephen Ministers?
Stephen Ministers are laypeople trained to provide one-to-one, Christ-centered
care. They have a compassionate heart for those who are hurting, and they’re
equipped with caring ministry skills by their congregation’s Stephen Leaders. A
Stephen Minister typically has one care receiver at a time and meets with that
person once a week to listen, care, pray, encourage, and offer emotional and
spiritual support.

• In what types of situations do Stephen Ministers provide care?
Stephen Ministers provide care to individuals facing difficult times in life—grief,
cancer, divorce, financial difficulties, hospitalization, chronic illness, job loss,
disability, loneliness, a spiritual crisis, or other life struggles.

• How does Stephen Ministry benefit pastors?
Stephen Ministry supports pastors by deepening, expanding, and extending
the caregiving capacity of their congregations. A team of Stephen Ministers,
together with a pastor, can provide ongoing care for more people than the
pastor could provide alone. This also frees pastors to invest more time in other
important ministry areas.

• Do Stephen Ministers care for people outside their congregation?
Yes. Stephen Ministers often provide care for people in the broader community,
enhancing and expanding a congregation’s outreach in a powerful way.

Meet the Pastors

REV. JASON DULEY - SENIOR PASTOR
At Galilee, we talk about “ordinary people” and “extraordinary
purpose.” That’s because we believe we’re all just regular people
called to do something beyond the norm. For instance, I’m an
ordinary person—my extraordinary purpose is to shepherd
people in faith, hope, and love.
Everyone has an extraordinary purpose that some time spent in relationship with God
and others can help reveal. I am here to help you discover your extraordinary purpose
and connect your gifts with that purpose.
I invite you to connect with me at Galilee.
[email protected]

REV. GEITRA MICKELSON - ASSOCIATE PASTOR
Geitra Mickelson, Galilee’s newest addition to our clergy staff, is an
Ohio native who comes to our church with a background in music,
education, and theater. Active in church throughout her life, Geitra
responded to the call to ministry here in Virginia, where she has
lived since 2001.
“I responded to a call when God’s love convicted my heart. I’m
eager to share that love with a hurt and broken world. Jesus has
made all the difference in my life, and I believe he can make a
difference in yours—no matter what!”
“My goal is to work alongside others who are passionately committed to helping those in
need.”
Geitra serves in Galilee’s ministries and at the Chapel at Lansdowne Woods, and is
pursuing the completion of her Masters of Divinity at Wesley Theological Seminary.
