Winter 2015

Highway 128

Is it possible to fall in love with a road? Of
course I’m not talking about the romantic
kind of love, but in driving Highway 128
I’ve found the kind of road that never
ceases to amaze me. Whether starting
way down in Calistoga’s wine country
or at its awesome redwood forest-
meets-ocean end (with Highway 1 at the
Mendocino coast), I’m never left bored
and restless - something I can’t say about
other routes. It has these beguiling twists
that take you through some of California’s
most classic and varied landscapes, all in
a little more than 50 miles.

One of the things that I got from author
Edward Abbey is that in order to really
experience a road and all that it offers, to
really appreciate it, you have to “get off
the damn thing.” Sometimes I’ll pull onto
the shoulder, amazed at a whole world
that is literally 10 feet away from the
cars whizzing past. I’ve stared at sheep
(which have stared right back) and found
something almost primeval in the Navarro
redwoods that, even though they were
almost all cut down 100 years ago, have
this resilience that gives you the feeling
that they’ll still be there, larger than ever,
hundreds of years from now.

Try it, if you ever get the chance.
Boonville, Calistoga, Geyserville, and
Philo, to name a few, are towns worth a
stop, and their wineries are more down
home than their big Napa cohorts,
without being short on a passion for great
wine and the land they live on. If there’s
one thing you won’t regret, it’s a trip
down this wonderful highway.
