Welcome back. I hope that you all had a very enjoyable and restful festive period. Cer-

We were absolutely delighted to hear of our U12 footballers’ success in the National Cup U13 U12 (A)
last Friday. The team won 1-0 (winning goal by Will de Wilde) which means that they are
down to the last sixteen in the entire country. It is an enormous achievement, of which Contact Us
the team (and the school) are justly proud. Another sporting triumph of note took place
during the holidays, when Eleanor Strevens (Year 7) won the Sussex Cross Country Claremont Prep and Nursery
Championships at Bexhill (U13 girls). With a winning margin of 12 seconds, it is no sur- School

which will take place on February 7th. St Leonards-on-Sea

We were delighted with the outcome of our November Ofsted inspection, in which TN37 7PW
Claremont was judged to be ‘Outstanding’ in all areas. The welfare inspection focused Tel.: 01424 751555

Our pupils are extremely altruistic and every term, children come to speak to me about
their fundraising ideas. Anna Irvine-Capel (Year 6) has asked that we collect items for ol.co.uk
Baby Basics. Baby Basics is “a volunteer-led project aiming to support new mothers and
families who are struggling to meet the financial and practical burden of looking after a
new baby”. Next week, we will be collecting the following items in the Chapel: baby
shampoo, wet-wipes, newborn nappies, good quality newborn second-hand clothes,
towels, toys and bedding. Thank you, in advance, for your support.

On Dec 22nd Adam C, Diya B and Galina B sang Christ-
mas music and carols for the staff, patients and fami-

lies at St Michael’s Hospice, singing in the reception
area and also on the ward corridors outside patients
rooms. Their efforts were very much appreciated by

all.

Amelia B took part in the Laton Ash Dance Show in July 2017.
The show was put on spontaneously due to one of her young
friends losing her fight against cancer. It was a very emotional
show with many tears, but the goal of fundraising was inspiring to
those who took part,
After costs, the show brought in just over £2000 (late donations
brought our initial tally up from £1k) which was donated to the
Royal Marsden Hospital.

Ski Trip 2017

At the end of last term 30 prep & senior school pupils along with 5 staff and 10 adults went to the high resort of Obertauern in
Austria. We had 6 days skiing with an evening entertainment programme on 5 nights.

The snow conditions had been the best they had been for 30 years, snow was falling as we landed at the airport and carried
on throughout the week. It was extremely cold on the first day hitting -11 degrees, but thankfully it turned mild as the week

went on.
We had 30 pupils split into 4 groups. A beginners, two intermediate and an advanced group. The beginners made such a tre-
mendous amount of progress they were off the nursery slope and challenging some difficult red and blue runs by the end of
the week. The intermediate and advanced groups skied with great speed and confidence, going over jumps, off piste and mo-
gul runs. Not to mention the black runs and the hardest slope in the resort, Gamleitenbahn, the highest point on the resort at

2313 metres. On the 5th day, each skier tackled the timed slalom race and even the parents and staff gave it a go.
Our hotel was based 200m from the beginners’ slope. The intermediate and advanced skied back to the hotel each afternoon.

We had 3 substantial meals a day and the hotel couldn't have been more accommodating. The hotel provided us with a
games rooms with table tennis being a highlight a couple of evenings during the week.

There was many highlights along with the skiing. We had a wide variety of activities in the evenings. Starting off with the
Krampus Festival which was truly terrifying, as devils in masks walked, chased and roamed through the street scaring specta-
tors. We had swimming next on the agenda, which took place in an outdoor pool and a slide which the children and staff thor-
oughly enjoyed!! The Tavern Bar, which was not part of the programme, turned out to be a big hit as pupils, staff and adults all
belted out their favourite songs! The horse-drawn sleigh ride turned out a lot calmer than the night before as we took in a gen-
tle ride around the Obertauern valley. We then had the evening ski which was new for quite a few of the pupils. We were the
first group to ski that evening on untouched fresh powder snow. The final evening we enjoyed a leisurely stroll through Salz-

burg to a pizzeria which served up the biggest pizzas any of us have ever come across!
On the final day, we went to Hanger 7 and looked over the Red Bull cars and planes before flying back that afternoon.

Thank you to all the adults and children on the trip that made it so successful and enjoyable.
Huge thanks however to Mr Sutherland, Mrs Ackerley, Mr Slattery and Ms Davidson for all their help on the trip who made the

trip run as smoothly as it did.
The feedback from the trip was extremely positive and everyone had a fantastic time. So watch this space for a possible trip

later in the year.

This week, in their French lessons, Pre-Prep and Prep children have been learning about La fête des Rois.
The enthusiasm for this fun activity never seems to cease. The classrooms were filled with children, wearing gold
crowns, who were saying Je suis le Roi! (I am the King!) or Je suis la Reine! (I am the Queen!) or singing ‘J’aime la
galette’. Children enjoyed acting out a scene with a pretend French family sharing a ‘galette des rois’. Originally,
made to celebrate Epiphany, the tradition of making a Three Kings Cake exists in several countries. In France, two
types of Three Kings cake can be found. One is a round cake filled with an almond paste. The second is a ring
made from yeast based dough a little like brioche, which seems to have originated in the Provence area of France.
Hidden inside each Three Kings cake is a fève. The original fèves were actually beans but over the years people
started using porcelain figures, traditionally a character from the Nativity. Modern fèves can take the collectable
form of Asterix, Mickey Mouse, the Eiffel Tower, Woody from Toy Story… Each cake comes with one or two gold
crowns. There are even people who collect ‘les fèves’. Here is Madame’s Hood collection of ‘fèves’ at Claremont.
This year the collection was enriched with a Paddington lucky charm.

U10 Rugby

Claremont 7 - 4 Ashford Prep

Wednesday match saw our U10s play Ashford Prep again, this time away. The boys played an
excellent game and we played to our strengths. Teddy B and Max W did a fantastic job making
the first tackle, rucking well and turning the ball over at every opportunity. Henry S made a
great effort in making tackles and found himself at scrum half and played the ball out well at
the breakdown. We then had our quick wingers in Will B and Harvey W who did a great job in
keeping their width and depth. Will picked up 3 tries and Harvey 5 tries. A really pleasing per-
formance by all the boys who have had another good season to date. Man of the match - Teddy
B who made tackle after tackle and was solid throughout.

The U13s

Claremont v Bethany and a DPS team.

In our opening match v DPS, we managed to maintain possession of the ball with some effective
rucking, notably from Xander S, Frank and James. This gave some of our strong runners a
chance to run in space which Max (3 tries), Ned (2), Elliot and Xander M exploited.

We had a tougher match v Bethany and it was good to see more of the players front-up defen-
sively. In attack we were failing to make use of the space when we secured the ball, hoping that
the first receivers would score. Once we moved the ball quickly we started to find space and
scored our first try. We were 2 tries to 1 down with time running out when a series of powerful
runs ended up with Max scoring the equalising try. All the players played a part in an exciting
afternoon's rugby.

The U12s had a tough game v DPS As. We showed plenty of determination in defence and at-
tack against a good team. Will led from the front, making some strong runs which made signifi-
cant ground. When the support kept up we managed to secure the ball and Charlie found Gonza-
lo who ran through a cover tackle to score. The opposition were more effective in the rucks,
securing more possession, and despite some epic defence, we conceded three tries, which was a
brave effort against a strong side.

Badgers

This week we have settled right back into the routine, attending Forest School in which we explored the for-
est and got very muddy walking through the stream, on top of P.E and French.
In addition to this, we getting very creative by creating our own self portraits using a variety of resources.
This was very interesting as we decided to all give ourselves some crazy hair! We carried on our creative
thinking by making our own boats, designing our own sails and flags. We have also focused on our number
recognition, developing on our knowledge of numerals one to ten.

Foxes

Welcome back Foxes! We hope you all had a lovely time off now let’s get cracking on getting you ready for
school!

On Monday we started off the term with a massive challenge in learning how to write our names! The Foxes
really enjoyed creating the letter formation of their first initials and recognising the sounds too.

On Tuesday we were set the challenge to see if we could count to 10 and beyond using our magic mathemati-
cal cubes.

On Wednesday we put our welly boots on and went for a stream walk through the woods at Forest School.

On Thursday we put our detective heads on as some of our toys were frozen by the Snow Queen! But we did
not know which toys were missing so we had to find ways to melt the ice to save the toys! Not to worry we
had great success!

And on Friday we enjoyed our phonics lesson passing on the sound and rhythm with Badgers; it was lots of
fun but very tricky to remember the sequence.

Hedgehogs

Welcome back and a happy new year. This term in Hedgehogs we welcome newcomers Agata, Maja, Harry
and those who have moved up from Robins.

Robins

This week we have enjoyed welcoming some new children into Robins from the Butterflies who
have settled so well. We have been looking at the colour white and have made some lovely
white paintings to display in our room. We also have started making handprints for our Meet
the Robins board.

Ducklings & Butterflies

A big welcome back to all the Ducklings and Butterflies and a very happy new year. This
week both rooms have been settling back into nursery life. The Ducklings have enjoyed win-
ter painting and treasure hunting with blue and white objects.

The Butterflies have been busy using lots of lovely paint to create beautiful pictures,
playdough play with the cutters and rolling pins and sand play with our friends in Ducklings.
A big welcome to Robyn and Poppy who have started this week in Butterflies.

Squirrels

This week we welcomed some new Squirrels to our class. We have been playing
friendship building games to encourage sharing and turn taking, and have spoke about
the Squirrels routine in circle time. The weather has turned very cold this week so
we have been encouraging the children to put on their own coats, hats and gloves,
and everyone tried their best at doing it all by themselves.
