READER RESPONSE THEORY
READER RESPONSE CRITICISM/ TRANSACTIONAL THEORY
Rosenblatt (1938, 1978) mentioned that there are two primary types of reading: efferent
and aesthetic. Informational reading is another name for efferent reading. Efferent
reading is used to learn new knowledge or how to carry out a task. As a result, several
interpretations are not necessary for efferent reading. Contrarily, aesthetic reading is
not focused on what readers learn or retain from a text. A reader should immerse
themselves in a text and read only for pleasure when engaging in aesthetic reading.
CHARACTERS
ANALYSIS
There are total five characters in the Perseus and
Medusa play by Amna Hussain. The King,
Perseus, Danae, Athena and Medusa. Each of
them carried their own uniqueness of portraying
the story.
CHARACTER ANALYSIS
PERSEUS
PROTAGONIST
● Protagonist is the main character who develops the plot
action and draws readers in by inspiring empathy and
interest. Perseus is clearly the hero of the story. He is the
one who go for the adventure of hunting Medusa’s
head. Perseus also the hold a good character in the
story, he is the opposite of the King.
CHARACTER ANALYSIS
THE KING
ANTAGONIST AND ROUND
● Antagonist is a bad character. The King hold this
character as he was the one who put Perseus in danger
of facing Medusa when he asked Perseus for Medusa’S
head.He is clearly the opponent of Perseus who is the
protagonist of the play.
● Round character are well-develop and complex figures
in the story. They have the ability to make unexpected or
perplexing decisions that grab readers' interest. The
King make an unexpected decision when he decided to
take a look at the Medusa’s head. He already mention
that he wasn’t born yesterday so, he must already well
inform that anyone that look into Medusa eyes would
become a stone. Instead, he still request to look at it.
CHARACTER ANALYSIS
DANAE
DEVELOPING
● A dynamic character undergoes change during a book
or story. Danae’s life changes after she decided to
decline the King’s proposal. She was a very honoured
woman but after Perseus left to hunt Medusa’s head, the
King made her his slave.
CHARACTER ANALYSIS
ATHENA
CONFIDANTE
● Confidante character is someone that the main
character confides. Athena is the one who helps Perseus
to slay the Medusa’s head by appearing on his dream
and give him a few useful tools. Such as metal shield,
diamond blade, winged sandals, cloth sack and the Cap
of Darkness
CHARACTER ANALYSIS
MEDUSA
STOCK
● Stock character is a supporting character that does not
undergo any development. Readers may identify a stock
character right away. Medusa was mention multiple time
in the story before she even appear in the storyline.
Thus, it is so much easier to recognize her.
DICTION ANALYSIS
Diction is a language stye that the writer used to
deliver their idea in effective way. In this play script,
Amna Hussain decides to uses specific tone in
every line of the script to make it more emotional
and interesting.
DICTION ANALYSIS
(TONE)
1) King: (angrier) Do you know what happens to
those who say no to the king?
Type of tone used, Aggressive tone. It attacks
Danae's position by blackmailing her. The writer
used this to make Dane feel afraid towards the
king’s punishment and finally could agree to his
desire.
DICTION ANALYSIS
(TONE)
2) Perseus: (gulps) As you wish.
Type of tone used is the nervous tone. The
writer wants to illustrate that Perseus is
scared. As the Perseus knew that it is nearly
impossible for anyone to come near the
medusa. Imagine having a duty to slay her
head? It sounds terribly dangerous and hard.
DICTION ANALYSIS
(TONE)
3) Danae: My son, where were you? The king made me a
slave because I refused to be his wife.
Type of tone used is melancholy. The writer uses
this tone to describe Danae's feeling of missing her
son. The first sentence are emphasizing that she
misses him. This tone also match with the second
sentence that describe Danae’s sad feeling as she
want to tell Perseus how hard her life has been
since the king made her a slave.

OPINION ON THE PLAY SCRIPT
OPINION ON THE PLAY SCRIPT
The king should not just ask Danae for a hand in marriage and expect
her to accept it. Marriage is about the willingness to share their whole
life with the partner. One must love her partner to do so. The king
should put some effort and make Danae fall in love first.
OPINION ON THE PLAY SCRIPT
Perseus should bring along some alliances to go hunting medusa. It
would be quite hard and dangerous to travel there alone. At the very
least, if it happens for him to be dead. At least there's someone to
bring home his body.
