MESSAGE FROM OUR CLERGY TEAM

Dear Congregants and Friends of Temple Solel,

As we enter this new decade of Jewish time, the year 5780, we feel privileged to continue
serving our community as your clergy team. And we are very excited for the year ahead!
We know that there are many pathways into Jewish life. In this program booklet for the
coming year, you’ll find opportunities for deep Jewish learning, community engagement
and relationship building, musical and spiritual connection, tikkun olam—repairing the
world, and more.

There are two simple, yet powerful, teachings from Jewish tradition that we hope will
guide you as you consider the ways you might become more deeply engaged with our
Temple Solel community this year.

The first: throughout Jewish tradition, we encounter the phrase “Shivim panim laTorah,”
“There are Seventy Faces to Torah.” This means both that there are unending ways to
interpret our sacred texts and teachings, and that there are many ways for each of us to
enter into dialogue with those texts and teachings. This year, as you will see in our Year-
at-a-Glance guide, we try to offer as many of those seventy faces as possible—through
adult learning opportunities in Torah study, mini courses, and fabulous guest lectures;
through family engagement around the High Holidays, Shabbat evening services,
volunteer opportunities, and communal Sunday learning; and through an embrace of
music and the arts. We encourage you to seek out those “faces” which most excite you,
and to try a few new ones as well! You never know what you might learn when learning,
praying, and giving back with others.

And a second teaching, which guides us through this year and always. Pirkei Avot, The
Wisdom of the Ancestors, enjoins us: “Bamakom she’ein anashim, hishtadel l’hiyot ish.”
“In a place where there are no human beings, strive to be a human being.” This is the
charge of the Jewish people, and of our community. To strive to embody the best, most
authentic, most giving parts of humanity, and to bring our full selves to spreading that
humanity throughout the world.

May this New Year of 5780 be a year of depth, discovery, learning, peace, and humanity.

YOUTH LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

THE SOLEL PRESCHOOL:

The Solel Preschool provides a structured learning environment based on the goals
of Reform Judaism, child development and early childhood education. We
encourage children to explore the world while developing small and large muscle
coordination, eye-hand coordination, language skills, a strong sense of self-esteem,
and foster a positive Jewish identity. Visit www.solelpreschool.org for information.

RAKER RELIGIOUS SCHOOL:

Temple Solel's Raker Religious School formal educational program begins with our
three year old children and continues through high school. We strive to provide our
students with interactive and challenging experiences that build a foundation of
knowledge, relevance, and literacy. Every experience needs to emphasize the core
values that we each bring from our diverse traditions and backgrounds. Shabbat
and holiday programs, worship, experiential learning, art, music, and family
programs are all included in order to provide a well-rounded educational
experience. Hebrew letter recognition and basic Hebrew vocabulary begins in
Kindergarten with formal Hebrew training beginning in grade 4 through grade 6.
Raker Religious School begins at 9:00 am on Sundays. To learn more, contact
Tobee Waxenberg at [email protected].

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

MAZEL KIDS:

Beginning at three years old, our program introduces the children to the Jewish
holidays, prayers, and T'filah. This program is for all three and four year old
children.

RAKER RELIGIOUS SCHOOL YOUTH & FAMILY RETREATS:

As an extension of the learning in the classroom, we go on two yearly retreats to
beautiful Prescott, AZ, for inspiring, camp-style weekends that reinforce friendships,
help to establish our community, and build on the importance of experiential
learning. The Youth Retreat is in the fall and the Family Retreat in the spring.

FAMILY LEARNING:

During the year, we encourage parents to join their children at Raker Religious
School to participate in the learning experience. P.A.C.T. (parents and children
together) is planned for grades K-6; the parents study with the rabbis and then
come together with their children to teach or complete a project.

Check eNUZ, Pathfinder, & visit templesolel.org/calendar for further details.

from across the valley. Emily Harrison is the advisor for this group.

in a variety of social action, community events, and conferences bringing teens from

Jewish values. During class, this group will engage in a discussion-style workshop.
One of the highlights of the Confirmation year is the opportunity to travel to
Washington, D.C. in January to attend the L’Taken Seminar with other Jewish teens
from around the country. There they will experience the work of the Reform
movement’s Religious Action Center and learn to lobby important issues. The year
will conclude with a ceremony and reception to mark and celebrate this special
group’s Jewish journey.

MINI COURSES

MAKING PRAYER REAL: PART I

Rabbi Linder frequently hears congregants expressing a desire to better
understand the prayers we read and sing each week, with the hope of having a
more meaningful experience with Jewish prayer. In response, he will bring his
colleague, Rabbi Mike Comins’, Making Prayer Real curriculum, to Temple Solel.
Taught in two parts, students will begin each class with a short video, hearing some
of the America’s outstanding clergy and teachers talk about a different dimension
to prayer. The videos will trigger a facilitated dialogue, developing a more
intimate relationship with the liturgy of our Siddur. By the end of the six sessions,
students will have greater access to a deeper prayer life, and feel more grounded
to live life with deeper gratitude, love, and kindness.
Taught by Rabbi John Linder
Tuesdays, November 12, 19, and 26, 7:00-8:30 pm

MAKING PRAYER REAL: PART II

Series continuation—complete description is listed above.
Taught by Rabbi John Linder
Tuesdays, January 7, 14, and 21, 7:00-8:30 pm

THE TALMUD OF RELATIONSHIPS

Have you ever wanted to study Talmud, but felt intimidated by this ancient text?
Or, perhaps, you are a Talmud scholar, but have always wanted to find deeper
ways to enter into its wisdom. In this course, we will explore the “Talmud of
Relationships,” using select passages from Talmud to answer questions like: “How
can I lead others with goodness?” “How can I balance work and family?” “How
might I learn my own emotions so I can relate better to others?” All texts will be in
translation, so this course is perfect for any learning level.
Taught by Rabbi Emily Langowitz
Tuesdays, February 4, 11, and 18, 7:00-8:30 pm

JUDAISM AND GENDER AND SEXUALITY

Through biblical texts, rabbinic discourse, historical documents, and modern
midrash, this course will explore the riches of the Jewish discussion of gender and
sexuality. We will learn to read hard texts with gender and sexuality as a lens,
we’ll uncover fascinating perspectives from within Jewish tradition, and, above all,
we’ll consider how Judaism’s dialogue around gender and sexuality can enrich our
own identities as Jews and as human beings.
Taught by Rabbi Emily Langowitz
Tuesdays, April 14, 21, and 28, 7:00-8:30 pm

Mini Course attendance is free for temple members and $18 per session for
nonmembers. Visit www.templesolel.org to register if you plan to attend.
