Who are these guys?

YEARS

You may notice that some of the Whitecaps players on the field do not appear in the team’s Official
Yearbook. That’s because the yearbook’s publishing schedule limits us to including the roster of
“full contract” players, most of whom signed up months ago to play here for the whole season.
But the Cape League season starts in mid-June, and some - often many - of those
players can’t be here that early. That’s usually because their college team is still alive in
the NCAA Tournament, culminating in the College World Series, which can run to the end
of June. By then, nearly one third of the Cape League season is already in the books!
It’s almost like recruiting a whole separate team. So Brewster, like every other team in
the league, recruits “temporary” players who stay on the roster until the contract guys
arrive. Could be a couple of days, a couple of weeks, or in some cases, the entire season.
In the course of an entire season, it’s not uncommon for Brewster to have
50 or more players suit up for the Whitecaps -- happily, not all at one time!
“It ain’t over till it’s over.”
-- Yogi Berra
Even when it’s time to say good-bye to a temporary player, we always check around
the league - as well as other summer collegiate leagues - to see if another team could use
his services. We want to see as many of these dedicated athletes as possible play the whole
season somewhere, getting the exposure to major league scouts they want and deserve.
As you can see, being a “temp” is an iffy proposition, not to mention a bit of a
revolving door for our host families. The Whitecaps salute these players and their
host families, and dedicate this special handout to them.
It includes temporary players who committed as of June 6, plus any full contract
players who signed by that date, but were too late to make the yearbook.
Thank you and welcome to Brewster, one and all!

Joe Donovan

C Michigan Freshman 5’11” 175 R/R

Joe is a full contract player for the Whitecaps, but his informa-
tion just missed the deadline for the Official Yearbook. As a
freshman Joe played in 14 games this spring for the Wolverines,
starting six of them. He hit for an average of .250 with one dou-
ble and three RBIs. His on-base percentage was .333. At West-
mont High School in Clarendon Hills, Illinois, his honors in
2017 included Collegiate Baseball All-American 1st Team and
Louisville Slugger All-American 1st Team. Also in his senior
year, he won the Dupage County Triple Crown with 16 home
runs, a .523 batting average and 49 RBI.
