7) To develop an environment that instills commitment for life-
long learning and a deep sense of social responsibility among staff
and students.
The vision and mission statements stated the value proposition of
academic and non-academic programs that educated, trained,
and developed budiman at IIUM. The learning pillars of retaining
basic human values and developing the mind, soul, and talents of
the human through learning to be (as human with budiman values),
learning to become (budiman with capability and integrity), then
budiman to learn to live together with other budiman and other
creatures by acquiring skills and competencies through learning
to know and learning to do (practicum).
Budiman that educated, trained, and developed at IIUM are
supported by biah (conditions and environment) through
pedagogy, social, facilities, and support system. Figure 3.3 shows
the Sejahtera Academic Framework and the Guiding Principles in
educating budiman at IIUM.

Figure 3.3: Sejahtera Academic Framework (SAF) and Guiding
Principles

51

Budiman are not static. Budiman is given guiding principles to
undergo the training and development programs. Budiman are
given the discretion and empowerment to decide the learning,
training, and development activities, with flexibility and innovation.
However, empowerment, flexibility, and innovation are
implemented within the accountability principle. Figure 3.4 shows
the Four Guiding Principles for Sejahtera Academic Framework
(SAF).

CONCEPT OF BUDIMAN
Budiman refers to individuals who are searching for adab (virtue),
budi (kindness) and sejahtera (peace) so that budiman and
budiwati will have the capacity of bijak berbudi (wisdom in
kindness), berani (brave) and bijaksana (full with wisdom).
Budiman and budiwati with these attributes will manifest budi
bahasa (rasa), budi pekerti (rupa), and budi bicara (roh).

52

Thus, budiman and budiwati will have sejahtera niat (peaceful
intentions), sejahtera keputusan (peaceful decisions), and
sejahtera tindakan (peaceful actions). Budiman and budiwati will
be continuously making contribution of sejahtera to self and
others.
The foundation of adab (virtue) is based on formula A-D-A-B. A is
amanah (trustworthy), dakar (staunch), akhlak (ethics), and
bestari (intelligent). Figure 3.5 depicts the formula A-D-A-B.

The word budi is originated from Sanskirt "buddhi" which means
wisdom, understanding, or intellect. Lim Kim-Hui postulated budi
as the Malay mind into Budi Bicara, Budi Daya, Budi Bahasa, Budi
Hati, and Budi Akal.
Budi Akal is the foundation of intellectualism of budiman. Budiman
has to contemplate and think by observing the surrounding,
events, trends and activities. Before making any discourse,
budiman use Budi Bicara, a combination of intellectualism with
culture, emotional, and social intelligence.

53

Then budiman gain Budi Daya to power up enthusiasm,
excitement, and passion. In working with and through fellow
budiman, budiman use Budi Bahasa and Budi Pekerti to fulfill
promises, to be punctual, be careful in communication, be
prudent, be truthful, and to be honest in conversation, dialog and
discourse. More importantly, budiman know Budi Hati, deeply
about the thinking, feeling, and the reaction of fellow budiman.
Figure 3.6 shows the components of budi.

BUDI
Budi is the mind, soul, and action of a reasonable human (Lim Kim
Hui, 2003; Husin, 2010). The essence of budi bicara is to apply
akal (intellect), dakar (staunch), amanah (trust) and bestari
(intelligent) (ADAB) framework (Dzulkifli Abdul Razak, 2021). The
operative tools are shura (mutual consensus) and gotong royong

(communal work).

BUDI BICARA

54

BUDI AKAL
Testimony from staff of IIUM about Student Mkitchen:

From Prof Aslam Kenms, 1st batch Econs IIUM. "Tahniah Dr Dzul
and the M-Kitchen effort. This is a noble effort and I think the
previous soup kitchen effort that has been going on for 3-4 years
from KIRKHS and later our effort to provide food to needy
students are now complemented by this effort.

Almarhum Prof Emeritus Dato' Dr AHAS had a very unique way of
interpreting the case of Abu Bakr and the early sahabah who were
willing to sacrifice their wealth. Yes, iman was strong. However,
being a political/social scientist, he also wanted to say that there
was a high degree of trust and confidence in the well-being
'system' - whether from voluntary giving or later when the State
came in. He was keen to stress that Muslim society translated the
teachings of tawhid and brotherhood into a relatively good social
safety net system.......

Mkitchen has been reminded to keep the Budi Akal intact
regardless of the challenges. As Almarhum Buya Hamka said:
Jangan takut jatuh, kerena yang tidak pernah memanjatlah yang
tidak pernah jatuh. Yang takut gagal, kerana yang tidak pernah
gagal hanyalah orang yang tidak pernah melangkah. Yang takut
salah, kerana dengan kesalahan yang pertama, kita dapat
menambah pengetahuan untuk mencari jalan yang benar pada
langkah yang kedua.

Mkitchen has been reminded to keep the Budi Akal intact through
learning, understanding and practice the business strategy of
Abdulrahman bin Auf (Radhiyallahu Anhu) was built on three main
principles:

1. Using Cash
Cash is the most important principle in Abdulrahman bin Auf‘s
(Radhiyallahu Anhu) business strategy. He constantly paid cash
for products and sold them for cash. (There are no credit deals)

2. Never stock anything or wait for a greater profit
The second principle of Abdulrahman bin Auf's (Radhiyallahu
Anhu) business strategy is that he attempted to avoid storing

67

products and selling them even if he was only paid a penny in
profit. It had a high degree of money flow, therefore the focus was
on expanding profits to increase earnings.

3. He was always truthful in his dealings.
The third principle of Abdulrahman bin Auf's (Radhiyallahu Anhu)
business strategy is that he never hides any flaws in his products.
He told his customer if his goods were not up to par or if there was
even a minor flaw in them.

CHAPTER 4
MUTUAL COOPERATION
ABSTRACT
This chapter deliberates on mutual cooperation development. The
first phase of mutual cooperation (ta‘awun) among team members
is the usrah process which includes ta‘aruf (get to know), tafahum
(get to understand), takaful (get to protect), and tanashur (get to
love and care) orientation. The second phase of mutual
cooperation is the practice with essential modules (social
entrepreneurship, business model canvas, digital business and
marketing, cash management, crowdfunding, occupational safety,
hygiene management, personality grooming, culinary art, cooking,
distribution, and public engagement).
Keywords: Ta‘awun, Cooperative Behaviour, mKitchen®,
Community Engagement, IIUM.
INTRODUCTION
―…… And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not
cooperate in sin and aggression.‖ (Surah Al-Maidah: 2)
The first phase of mutual cooperation in team building is to
create ta‘awun (get to cooperate) among team
members, asnaf and the needy, and key partners such
as masjid committee, government agencies, companies, and
NGOs, with ta‘aruf (get to know), tafahum (get to
understand), takaful (get to protect) and tanashur (get to love and
care) orientation. Figure 4.1 shows the underpinning concepts
in ta‘awun.

71

Figure 4.1: The underpinning concepts in ta‘awun

Ta‘aruf is derived from the Arabic word ‗arafa which means
knowing. Technically, ta‘aruf is an act of knowing each other.
Ta‘aruf includes the familiarisation process. Allah has created
humans with differences for them to get to know each other.
"O humanity! Indeed, We created you from a male and a female,
and made you into peoples and tribes so that you may ˹get to˺
know one another. Surely the most noble of you in the sight of
Allah is the most righteous among you. Allah is truly All-Knowing,
All-Aware." Surah al-Hujurat (49) verse 13.
According to Ahmad (2019), ta‘aruf is a platform and vehicle for
people to get to know other people with deep mutual
understanding. Eventually, the process leads to loving and caring
among people in the ta‘aruf process. This process minimizes
racial, national, and tribal prejudices. Ultimately, it leads to a deep
and true meaning of ukhuwwah (bonding) and wahdah (unity).
―The believers are but one brotherhood, so make peace between
your brothers. And be mindful of Allah so you may be shown
mercy.‖ Surah al-Hujurat (49) verse 10.

72

As for Tafahum, it refers to the habit of mutual understanding or
wihdatul fikri (unity of thought). The mutual understanding with
ukhuwwah and wihdatul fikri leads to ikhwana (brotherhood).
"And hold firmly to the rope of Allah and do not be divided.
Remember Allah‘s favour upon you when you were enemies, then
He united your hearts, so you—by His grace—became brothers.
And you were at the brink of a fiery pit and He saved you from it.
This is how Allah makes His revelations clear to you, so that you
may be ˹rightly˺ guided." Surah Ali-Imran (3) verse 103.
Ta‘awun is mutual cooperation in behavior (thinking, feeling, and
action) among individuals, groups, or organizations to achieve
mutual benefits under the parameters of al-birr (righteousness)
and al-taqwa (piety).
One of the expected outcomes and benefits of mKitchen is to
transform asnaf as food-preneurs and eventually to become zakat
payers as well as create job opportunities for others. Well-aligned
to SDG1 (No Poverty), SDG2 (Zero Hunger), and SDG8 (Decent
Work and Economic Growth), which is to realise the meaning of
Rahmatan lil-‗Alamin, through SDG4 (Quality Education), SDG12
(Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG17
(Partnerships for the Goals).
Together making the world a better place. Any mutual cooperation
between al-ithm (sins) and al-‘udwan (aggression) is not accepted
as ta‘awun.
Figure 4.2 depicts the concept of ta‘awun and connectedness.

73

Figure 4.2: the concept of ta‘awun and connectedness

Ta‘awun is not just theoretical, but practical. The application of
ta‘awun has been experienced by mKitchen participants as shown
in Figures 4.3a, 4.3b, 4.3c and 4.3d.

Figure 4.3a: Ta‘awun at preparing chicken chop

74

Figure 4.3b: Ta‘awun at preparing Mi Celop

The mKitchen activities are expected to help shaping the asnaf
students. The formal academic load should not consume the entire
time of the students‘ tenure in IIUM. Cognizant to this, mKitchen
activities will contribute to the students‘ educational experience
beyond the classrooms and the campus.

CHAPTER 5
EXPOSITION SEJAHTERA
ABSTRACT
This book explains mKitchen IIUM students' journey in mKitchen
by integrating food entrepreneurship with Budi Sejahtera. The
students started the journey with in-class training on
entrepreneurship, business plan development, digital marketing,
and cash management. Then, the students had a cooking
demonstration on Turkish delights. One month has been allocated
for both process and content phases of training. Then, the
students had the pre-internship demonstration at Wadi Budi
before a month-long internship during Ramadan 1443.
Keywords: Ta‘awun, Cooperative Behaviour, mKitchen®,
Community Engagement, IIUM.
INTRODUCTION
mKitchen is a platform to learn and demonstrate ―Budi Sejahtera.‖
The term manifests the aspiration, vision, and mission of the
International Islamic University Malaysia as the Garden of
Knowledge and Virtue or ―Taman Ilmu dan Budi.‖ The graduates
carry the torch of ―Insan Sejahtera‖ to widespread ―Budi
Sejahtera.‖
―Budi Sejahtera‖ is two words used frequently in Bahasa Melayu to
reflect peace, knowledge, and virtue. ―Orang Berbudi Kita
Berbahasa, Orang Memberi Kita Merasa,‖ has been said naturally
in giving and taking of kindness and generosity.
This pantun (poem) has been used for centuries, but it is still
evergreen. The original narrative of this pantun was related to the
socio-economics of the Riau Islands people in Indonesia, but the
essence of budi in this pantun is always relevant to remind people
to create and leave a good legacy in life.

Pulau Pandan Jauh ke Tengah
Gunung Daik bercabang Tiga
Hancur Badan dikandung Tanah

Budi Baik dikenang Juga
Another popular pantun is about the need to invest in budi for the
civilisation sustainability.

Bunga Melati Bunga di Darat
Bunga Seroja di Tepi Kali
Hina Besi kerana Karat

Hina Manusia tidak Berbudi
In the mean-time, budi is always accompanied with bahasa

Tingkap Kayu Papan Bersegi
Sampan Sakat di Pulau Angsa

Indah Tampan kerana Budi
Tinggi Bangsa kerana Bahasa

Broadly speaking, budi is a composite of knowledge,
comprehension, and application of knowledge with manners. In
everyday conversation, the word budi is never absent in reminding
others about the need to do good, to be virtuous, to be nice, to be
right, and to be beneficial to others at all times.
―Sejahtera‖ is also not strange in daily conversation. In fact, every
speech is beginning with the greetings of peace or ―salam
sejahtera‖ and ―selamat sejahtera,‖ The Government of Malaysia
has taken ―sejahtera‖ approach to address the pandemic covid-
19. Even the tracing application known as ―Mysejahtera‖ has been
used to trace movement and stop the spread of covid-19.
The vaccination program also used the ―sejahtera‖ approach in
persuading all the population in Malaysia to get the vaccination.
Not just once, but three times. MySejahtera has been used to
register, track and to make follow up with Premier Dose 1, Premier
Dose 2, and Booster Dose.

98

―Sejahtera‖ is also closely related to the practices of Islam. The
five pillars of Islam and six pillars of Iman have been intimately
related to the very fundamental spirit of the faith, i.e., Islam.
Sejahtera term also has been aligned well in other socio-economic
aspects such as sejahtera leadership to enable leadership to
bring social welfare and happiness.
Why Budi Sejahtera?
Every action is counted based on our intention, sincerity and
integrity. Budi Sejahtera is related to the heart.

Narrated Al-Nu‗man ibn Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him), I
heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saying, ―Both
legal and illegal things are evident but in between them there are
doubtful (suspicious) things and most of the people have no
knowledge about them. So whoever saves himself from these
suspicious things saves his religion and his honor. And whoever
indulges in these suspicious things is like a shepherd who grazes
(his animals) near the Hima (private pasture) of someone else and
at any moment he is liable to get in it. (O people!) Beware! Every
king has a Hima and the Hima of Allah on the earth is His illegal
(forbidden) things. Beware! There is a piece of flesh in the body if
it becomes good (reformed) the whole body becomes good but if it
gets spoilt the whole body gets spoilt and that is the heart.‖ [Al-
Bukhari].
Our heart could tell us whether our intention, decision and action
are sejahtera.
