Indian dairy: Moving from

SUFFICIENCY TO EFFICIENCY

Given the growing market for milk and
milk products on the one hand, and
the untapped potential in the dairy
sector in India on the other, dairying
offers a great opportunity to increase
employment, incomes and livelihoods in
rural areas. Increased consumer interest

in high protein diets and increasing
awareness and availability of value-
added dairy products through
organised retail chains are driving
the demand for milk. During the
last 15 years, milk cooperatives
have converted about 20 per cent
of milk procured into traditional
and value-added products that
offer about 20 per cent higher
revenue. This share of value-

added products is estimated to increase
to 30 per cent by 2021-22. Although
the dairy sector is still unorganised and
due to rise in demand for high protein
diets like milk, the country is witnessing
adulteration of milk.

Indian dairy: Moving from

SUFFICIENCY
TO EFFICIENCY

Given the growing market for milk and milk products on the one hand, and the untapped
potential in the dairy sector in India on the other, dairying offers a great opportunity to
increase employment, incomes and livelihoods in rural areas. Increased consumer interest in
high protein diets and increasing awareness and availability of value-added dairy products
through organised retail chains are driving the demand for milk. During the last 15 years,
milk cooperatives have converted about 20 per cent of milk procured into traditional and
value-added products that offer about 20 per cent higher revenue. This share of value-added
products is estimated to increase to 30 per cent by 2021-22. Although the dairy sector is
still unorganised and due to rise in demand for high protein diets like milk, the country is
witnessing adulteration of milk.

In compliance of orders of the Supreme Court of
India dated August 5, 2016 in the case Writ Petition

September 5, 2017 that brought together more
than 90 participants including representatives from

During the workshop, NDDB released a booklet
on milk fortification, which includes standard

Looking ahead, the Tata Trusts’ India Nutrition

the milk fortification project forward.

The project aims to fortify 2 million metric

Arjuna launches highly potent Ashwagandha

Arjuna Natural Ltd., recently launched Shoden, its high-potency,
all-natural ashwagandha extract, at Vitafoods, Geneva. Shoden is
the highly bioactive extract of ashwagandha (Withania somnifera),
standardized to contain more than 35 per cent glycowithanolides-
the most active components of ashwagandha. This plant has been
extensively used in India for centuries to reduce symptoms of
anxiety and stress. Arjuna has invested in several ongoing clinical
studies of Shoden at top research institutes. Results of the first
study will be published in a few months.

Ashwagandha, also known as 'Indian winter cherry' and 'Indian
ginseng', is one of the most important herbs used in traditional
medicine in India, has been used in Ayurvedic and indigenous
medicine for more than 3,000 years. Ashwagandha extract contains
alkaloids. Some of the alkaloids are toxic and it is technically
challenging to remove them and keep the product safe to use.
Arjuna developed a new, proprietary method of purification,
based on traditional Indian processes, that targets and removes
only toxic alkaloids, while retaining the beneficial bioactive ones.
