Folk Music Chosen: Powada

History Of Powada: Powada is a genre of Marathi poetry that emerged during the late 17th century in
India. The Powadas are a kind of Marathi ballad written in an exciting style, narrating historical events
in an inspiring manner.

Origin: It is from Maharashtra.

Significance: It is written to raise awareness on social issues.

Artists: The earliest notable powada was the ‘Afzal Khanacha Vadh’ by Agnidas, which recorded
Shivaji’s encounter with Afzal Khan. The next notable powada was ‘Tanaji Malusare’ by Tulsidas, which
gave an account of the capture of Sinhagad Fort by Tanaji. ‘Baji Pasalkar’ by Yamaji Bhasker is
another notable contemporary powada.

Jaimeet Chauhan: Folk Music

History: Pandwani-is a folk singing style involving narration of tales from the

ancient Indian epic Mahabharata. The singing also involves musical
accompaniment. Bhīma, the second of the Pandava is the hero of the story in
this style

Origin: It has come from Chhattisgarh.

Significance: Pandavani can be understood as a part of the tradition of the

tellers-of-tales present in every culture or tradition (like Baul singers of Bengal
and Kathak performers), where ancient epics, anecdotes and stories are
recounted or re-enacted to educate and entertain the masses.

Bhavya Singh: Indian shuttler Srikanth Kidambi would definitely look back on

2021 with a smile on his face. The year gave him one of his most defining career
moments. Despite facing some snags this year, after crashing out of the All England
Open in 2021 and getting knocked out in the 2021 French Open again in the first round,
