lunch time. Last Sunday I got up very late. I looked out of the window, it was dark outside.
“What a gloomy day,” I thought. “It is raining again.” Just then the telephone rang. It was
my aunt Nora. “I am at the station. I’ve come to see you.” — “But I am still having

Задание 13. Прочитайте диалог и перескажите его в косвенной речи.

A passenger addressed a lady travelling in the same compartment.
“Have you a family, madam?”
“Yes, sir, one son.”
“Indeed! Does he smoke?”
“No, sir, he has never touched a cigarette.”
“So much the better, madam. Tobacco is poison. Does he drink wine?”
“Oh, no, he has never taken a drop of it.”
“Then I congratulate you. Does he come home late at night?”
“Never. He always goes to bed right after dinner.”
“He is a model young man, madam. How old is he?”
“Five years, sir.”

Возможный ответ: A passenger asked a lady travelling in the same compartment if
she had a family. She answered that she had a son. He wondered if her son smoked.
She denied that her son smoked and added that he had never touched a cigarette. The
passenger was delighted to hear that and said that tobacco was poison. Then he wanted
to know if her son drank wine. She again denied that her son had ever drunk wine and
she added that he had never taken a drop of it. The passenger congratulated her and
wondered if her son came home late at night. The lady denied it and answered that her
son went to bed right after dinner. The passenger praised her son and told her that her
son was a model young man. Then he wanted to know how old her son was. The lady
answered that her son was five years old.

Text 1

In Spain I lived in a flat with students from the local university. In my drama class I
met a Spanish girl who was looking for someone to speak English with. We became best
friends and we spoke half the time in English, and half the time in Spanish. I also joined
a gym and had great fun trying to do an aerobics class which was not a difficult task
though the instructions were given in Spanish. On Sundays I went to the cinema and only
watched Spanish films. Now I’m quite good at Spanish.

Text 2

The first foreign language that I studied was French. I learnt it at a secondary school.
Between school and university I spent three months working on two farms in southern
France. This helped me to speak easily in French and to get a rich vocabulary connected
with farming. I can still speak and read in French quite well. However, my written French
is rather poor.

Задание 6. Установите соответствие между заголовками 1—8 и текстами А—D. Четыре заголовка

лишние.

1. Super computer 5. Intelligence machines in our life

2. Human intelligence test 6. Computer intelligence test

3. Man against computer 7. Computers change human brains

4. Robotic industry 8. Electronic film stars

A. Artificial intelligence is the art of making machines that are able to “think”. We often
don’t notice it but artificial intelligence is all around us. It is present in computer games,
in the cruise control in our cars and the servers that direct our e-mail. Some scientists
believe that the most powerful computers could have the power of the human brain.
Machines have always been excellent at tasks like calculation. But now they are better
than humans in many spheres, from chess to mixing music.

B. There are a number of different methods which try to measure intelligence. The most
famous of which is perhaps the IQ, or “Intelligence Quotient” test. This test was first
used in early 20th-century Paris. The modern day IQ test measures a variety of different
types of ability such as memory for words and figures and others. Whether IQ test
actually tests general intelligence is disputable. Some argue that they just show how
good the individual is at IQ tests!

C. Analysis shows that human intelligence is changing. We are gaining abilities in some
areas of intelligence, while losing them in others, such as memory. So this generation
may not remember the great number of poems, their abilities are greater in other
areas. It has been discovered that wide use of video games approves reaction time.
But we could only dream of computing without calculars as fast as our grandparents
did.

D. In 1950 mathematician Alan Turing invented a test to check machine intelligence. In
the Turing Test, two people (A and B) sit in a closed room, a third person (C) who
asks questions, sits outside. Person A tries to answer the questions so that person C
doesn’t guess who they are: men or women, while person B tries to help him in their

57

identification. Turning suggested a machine take the place of person A. If the machine
fooled the human, it was likely to be intelligent.

Задание 9. Прочитайте фрагменты текста и расставьте их в нужном порядке.

A. Months ahead of time, we enrolled via the Internet in the daylong Wednesday cooking
class at Seasons of My Heart, the chef and cookbook author Susan Trilling’s cooking
school in the Elta Valley, about a 45-minute drive north to town. In her cookbook and
PBC series of the same name, Mr Trilling, an American whose maternal grandparents
were Mexican, calls Oaxaca “the land of no waste” where cooking techniques in some
ancient villages have endured for a thousand years.

B. I suppose he is a member of the Emeril generation. Gabe has spent his formative
years shopping at the Berkeley Bowl, where over half a dozen varieties of Thanksgiving
yams, in lesser mortals, can instill emotional paralyses. He is blessed with a critical
eye. “I think Emeril is really cheesy,” he observed the other night while watching a puff
pastry segment. “He makes the stupid jokes. But he cooks really well.”

C. If there is a gene for cuisine, Gabe, my 11-year-old son, could splice it to perfection.
Somewhere between Greenwich Village, where he was born, and the San Francisco
Bay area, where he has grown up, the little kid with the stubborn disposition and
freckles on his nose has forsaken Boy Scouts and baseball in favour of wielding a
kitchen knife.

D. Appealing to Gabe’s inner Iron Chef seemed like an indirect way to introduce him to
a place where the artful approach to life presides. There was also a selfish motive:
Gabe is my soul mate, a fellow-food wanderer who is not above embracing insanity
to follow his appetite wherever it leads.

E. With its manifold ingenious cultures, Oaxaca seemed the perfect place to push
boundaries. Like the mole sauces for which it is justly famous, the region itself is subtle
blend of ingredients — from dusty Zapotec villages where Spanish is a second language
to the zocalo in colonial Oaxaca, a sophisticated town square brimming with street life
and vendors selling twisty, one-story-tall balloons.

1. Explaining the colour 5. Words often confused
2. Hidden world 6. Hidden treasures
3. An unforgettable experience 7. Frightening but attractive
4. Exploring the ocean 8. Facts and figures

A. Many people use the terms ocean and sea interchangeably when speaking about the
ocean, but there is a difference between the two terms when speaking of the study
of the Earth’s surface. In terms of geography, a sea is part of the ocean partially
enclosed by land. Seas are found on the margins of the ocean and are partially
enclosed by land. Seas are smaller than oceans and are usually located where the
land and ocean meet.

B. Ocean is defined as the body of salt water covering much of the Earth or a large
quantity of something. The amount of salt may vary with the Arctic Ocean being the
least salty. The five oceans cover about 70% of the Earth’s surface. The deepest
point of all oceans is the Mariana Trench, situated in the Pacific Ocean. Located near
Japan, it goes to depths of 36,200 feet and is the lowest elevation on the surface
of the Earth.

C. The ocean is a mysterious place which attracts people as well as terrifies them.
Some people are afraid of the ocean’s unrivaled power. Thalassophobia is the tech-
nical name for people who have a phobia of the sea or other large bodies of water.
However, while the ocean harbors some of the most terrifying creatures ever to exist,
it also contains many marvels — the majority of which are yet to be explored.

65

D. We like to think there are few things left to explore for people. Yet, our ocean is a
deep, dark and mysterious void which is full of undiscovered wonders. In fact, we’ve
only explored 5% of the ocean floor and less than 1% of the ocean itself with only
around 5% of the ocean floor has been mapped to a certain degree. With 70% of
the Earth’s surface covered in ocean, this means 65% of the Earth has yet to be
explored.

E. Swimming in the open ocean is very different from swimming at the beach. If you’ve
ever had a little swim at the beach and wondered what all the fuss is about, swim-
ming in the open ocean will make you fully understand it. Whether you look in front,
behind or beneath you, it will be darkness within between 30 and 40 feet. Although
you might not see anything, there is a world of creatures all around you that can
see you.

F. Scientists have discovered that there is around 20 million tons of gold in the ocean,
although it’s not very easy to mine since most of the undissolved gold deposits are a
mile or two under water and incased in rock. The ocean water also contains gold
although on average there is only 13 billionths of a gram of gold per liter of sea
water. If physicists and chemists find a way to get this gold, they will get an access
to unlimited wealth.

G. Why do the oceans appear blue? One theory is that the ocean reflects the sky which
is blue. One more theory states that plant and animal life and particles in the water
help to reflect the color blue. Finally, they say the observer’s eye absorbs only a
minimal amount of scattered blue wavelengths, and this is what is reflected back to
the eye. What really matters for people, though, is that we can enjoy the ocean’s
amazing colour.

My friends

I had two friends at the university. We were roommates. Dan was his mother’s son.

He 32 after his mother. From her Dan got his bright imagination and

his charming smile. She was Italian, from a proud Florentine family, a celebrated pia-

playwright. He would 33 up half the night reading The Red and the

Black or working on a short story and then sleep through a crucial history lecture. He

was a romantic at heart.

My second friend, Ben, was Irish. He had a rather sallow face and dark blue eyes.

His father had 34 a lot of money in the building trades and Ben had

even gone to college in New York but didn’t like it and left. Cool and detached, he

was often silent 35 the discussion was over. He was one of the few

men I’ve ever met who knew exactly where he was going. He was a sturdy pragmatist

and wouldn’t fall in love at first 36 like Dan.

We were an odd group, when you thought about it, maybe that was why we got

37 so well together: we balanced one another’s backgrounds, we
complemented one another’s moods. Even though Dan and Ben liked me, I always

thought that I brought nothing to the group 38 loyalty: I had that all
right, and to spare.

minutes to read the text silently, then be ready to read it out aloud. You will not have more than
1.5 minutes to read it.

Clocks are a common part of our lives today. Most people do not think about
them very often. At the same time, they are very complex and interesting machines.
The clock is really an old invention. At first, people tried to use the sun to watch the
time. You can find some very beautiful sun clocks in ancient castles. You can even
see them in some modern cities. Then people invented the sandglass. It used sand
to measure the time. We still use it in medicine. We need it to mark short periods
of time.

The first mechanical clock was made in France in 1360. Later, clockmakers in Eng-
land began producing clocks as a commercial product. These clocks had no hands.
They indicated the time by chiming each hour. Clocks and watches as we know them
today, including alarm clocks, appeared much later. There are electronic watches and
clocks too.

Task 2. Study the advertisement.

2. Making your pool safe 6. A pool or a bath?
3. Two kinds of pools 7. How to build a pool
4. More than you may think 8. The biggest pool ever

77

A. You may be very surprised if you learn how much chlorine there is in the water of
a typical swimming pool. Bleach contains about 5% of chlorine and a household
cleaner may contain about 2% of chlorine. The concentration of chlorine in swim-
ming pools is much higher — about 12% or even more. The reason is that chlorine
gets diluted with the water in the pool and hence more amounts of chemicals are
required to keep various bacteria away from the pool.

B. Normally a person may take almost 70 gallons of water to have his or her bath.
Obviously, you may wonder how it is related to swimming pools. If you measure the
capacity of an Olympic size pool, you will find it contains almost 660,000 gallons of
water. This much water is more than enough for almost 9,400 people to take their
bath quite easily. Historically, such pools were a great way of collecting water for
future use.

C. The world’s first swimming pool was made in the Roman times almost 5,000 years
ago. The first pool was located on the territory of the modern Pakistan. It was an
in-ground brick-made pool with staircases for people to get down for having their
bath. It was used for making the surrounding area cool and it was also an important
spot for various religious rituals. The concept of making the modern-day pools is
still similar to the first pool to some extent.

D. Hotels and resorts nowadays offer big swimming pools to their clients. The world’s
largest swimming pool is at the San Alfonso del Mar resort in Chile. The swimming
pool is 20 acres big which means it can cover about 11 soccer fields. The lowest
point of the pool is kept at 11.5 feet deep because of the safety of the swimmers.
The pool offers a number of water adventure activities such as windsurfing, kayak-
ing, and also scuba diving.

E. With the right swimming pool safety products you can reduce the risks and dangers
inherent to swimming pools and, at the same time, make your pool environment a
more enjoyable place for everyone. Swimming pool and hot tub hand rails and stair
rails are essential as they provide extra protection against slipping on stairs and
steps. Pool signs and depth markers are also extremely important to have in the
pool area.

F. If you want to enjoy swimming alone, you may build a swimming pool for your
personal use. However, you must consider not only the costs of the construction,
but also numerous accessories. In addition to pumps, ladders, and filters, any pool
will need cleaning tools and brushes, vacuum assemblies, covers, and chemicals.
Many will also need handrails, thermometers and even heaters. These costs start at
roughly $400, and can easily reach well into the thousands.

G. Basically, there are two main types of swimming pools. Above-ground swimming
pools are installed above ground level. These pools come in variety of sizes and
models and you don’t have to dig up the backyard to install one. Moreover, above-
ground pools are cheaper as compared to in-ground pools. Still, in-ground swimming
pools are more popular. People, who are not tight on budgets and space, opt for
these pools. As the name suggests, these pools are built into the ground.

A cat or a dog?

Cats and dogs are the most popular pets worldwide. If it’s difficult for you to decide
if you are a cat person or a dog person, here are some things for you to think about.

Dogs are always happy to see you. They are loyal and really enjoy your company. Be-

sides, dogs are more trainable. Teaching them to do tricks is fun, A .

Moreover, dogs are great activity partners. You can take them running and walking

in off-leash areas B . It’s awesome having a running partner

C . Dogs are also good alarm systems. Most people feel safer
knowing their dogs will alert them if there are intruders or any other potential danger.

Cats are lower maintenance compared with dogs D to keep

them happy and healthy. You can also leave town for a weekend, and the cat will feed,

water, and clean up after itself. You’ll need to board the dog if you’re going anywhere.

E , you’re going to have a tough time with bad behavior. Cats, on
the other hand, naturally do the right thing. Cats don’t smell bad whereas most dogs

do. At the same time, there are dog breeds which don’t shed F .

All things considered, it really depends on your lifestyle, what you value in a pet,

your time commitment, etc. After all, some people finally decide to get both as pup-

pies and kittens are so cute.

Supermarket tricks

Have you ever wondered why the fresh fruit and veggies is the first thing you see
in store? Or why the bread and milk are so far away? Supermarkets spend millions
of dollars researching consumer behaviour in order to develop tactics to compel you
to buy more in their stores. I’d like you to have a look at some of the most common
tricks of trolleyology to help you avoid spending your entire budget next time you get
a shopping trolley.

Consumer psychologists say veering to the right when you walk into a shop is a
classic biological trait linked to most people’s preference for using their right hand.

79

Research in the US has shown that shoppers who travel in an anti-clockwise direc-
tion will spend, on average, two dollars more per trip than clockwise shoppers. One
more research, conducted on shopper movement patterns in-store using GPS track-
ers, suggests people travel to some aisles only, and rarely in a systematic up-and-
down pattern. Even planned, longer shopping trips follow this scheme. The most
common path to travel in-store is around the outside perimeter, dipping in and out
of the aisles as needed. As a result, the ends of each aisle are the most profitable
part of the store.

When you enter a big supermarket, fresh fruit and vegetables is the first shopping
zone. Although it’s not logical to have squashable fruit and veggies as the first items
to pack into your trolley, this department is deliberately located to give the supermarket
a positive image of being fresh and healthy. People who use the fresh food areas also
tend to spend more money in the store overall.

By setting up different ‘marketplace’ areas, it feels as though we’ve visited several
different stores rather than a single big shop. Each of these areas has different lighting,
floor coverings and sometimes individual counters for service (such as a deli). It’s all
about creating a market-like feel. Areas such as the bakery, apart from smelling good,
give the impression the supermarket is trustworthy. It’s like they’re saying, “You can
trust us because we make stuff.”

One more classic retailing trick is to put the milk and bread at the very back of the
store (often at opposite ends) to encourage short-term shoppers to walk right through
the shop and be tempted to buy other products along the way. Recent research has
shown it’s actually more efficient to have these products toward the front of the store,
and place the other impulse products close by. Smart supermarkets are even putting a
small area with a limited selection of bread and milk at the front of the shop for those
shoppers whose motives won’t be modified, and then having a more extensive selection
of bread and milk at the back. Thus, little fill-in trips we take during the week will result
in many unplanned purchases, and on average, unplanned purchases will account for
a greater share of the total bill for a fill-in rather than a major trip.

Confusion and emotional involvement will have an effect on how long a person spends
in front of a particular area in the supermarket. You might find consumers spending
a long time in front of the coffee selection area. Similarly, baby food and pet food
purchases take longer because of emotional involvement. Soups and dressings often
involve long buy times because of the sometimes confusing variety of options on offer.
As a result, long buy-time products are placed where shoppers will not feel hurried,
crowded or as if they’re getting in the way of other customers. These product areas
will often be clearly marked out in a separate section of the shop.

Even knowing this and much more, I still sometimes find myself with a lot of un-
planned items in my trolley. Certainly, it’s not an ultimate solution of the problem but
at least it’s a chance to resist some temptations while shopping.

12 What does the word trolleyology (Paragraph 1) mean?

1) Awareness of where you can find certain goods.
2) Knowledge of techniques which shops use.
3) Information on using supermarket trolleys.
4) Skills to plan your shopping wisely.

Ответ:

80

13 According to the research, mentioned in the text, how do most people move
around a shop?

1) They move along the perimeter.
2) They follow GPS navigators.
3) They follow a systematic pattern.
4) They examine each aisle carefully.

Ответ:

14 Why do supermarkets place fruits and vegetables in the first shopping zone?

1) To make you organize your shopping.
2) To help you save money on shopping.
3) To help you pack your goods conveniently.
4) To make a good impression on a customer.

Ответ:

15 Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a way to create shopping zones in
a supermarket?

1) Lighting. 3) Mini-shops.
2) Flooring. 4) Smells.

Ответ:

16 Some supermarkets have two areas with milk and bread to…

1) encourage impulsive buyers.
2) differentiate between customers.
3) make people wish to explore the shop.
4) help clients to save their time.

Ответ:

17 Why does choosing soups and dressings take a long time?

1) It makes people emotionally involved.
2) They are situated far from the entrance.
3) The choice of these products is too wide.
4) There are crowds in these departments.

Ответ:

18 What is the purpose of the article?

1) To prevent people from spontaneous shopping.
2) To inform readers on supermarket techniques.
3) To teach customers how to behave in a shop.
4) To talk people out of going to big supermarkets.

How to make good selfies

What do you think of taking selfies? Taking selfies is a fun

26 way to show the world your and fash- PERSONAL

27 From presidents to Academy Award , WIN

almost everybody’s doing it. But don’t just point your cam-

an art to taking attention-grabbing selfies that your friends
will love seeing.

28 Have an expression. INTEREST

You can’t go wrong with smiling! Maybe smiling

as the case might be — makes you feel a little silly, but

taking a random photo of yourself with your phone is a silly

enough action in itself.

Pay attention to good lighting. Having a solid light source is
an essential part of taking any kind of photograph, and self-

flattering kind, so try to take your selfie near a window or

outdoors.

Carol

Carol Mansfield was never a good sleeper. Even when things were 32
well, Carol had trouble having five hours of continuous sleep. As she got older — when

the credit card companies started 33 at the end of the month —

she’d be lucky to get three hours straight. And last night, with her sons gone, she sat

up in bed, clawed at the sheets, and made barely two.

“Thought you’d like some coffee,” Brandon 34 as he entered the
bright white room in the morning.

35 yesterday, Scott wasn’t by his side. Today it was just Bran-
don, wearing his standard ill-fitting gray suit and a surprisingly warm smile. He handed

Carol the coffee with both hands. “Careful, it’s hot,” he told Carol 36
sounding concerned.

“Thank you,” Carol replied, 37 him carefully and studying his new
attitude. He was too attentive and too polite.

“So, how are you feeling?” Brandon asked as he pulled up the chair and sat next

to her.

“Fine,” she answered. “If you are looking 38 my sons, you should

know that neither of them came home last night. I don’t know where they are.” But

he didn’t believe her.

Speaker A

Sport is one of my favourite activities. I love running, swimming, playing tennis, doing
gymnastics. When I was little, my parents took me to the pool and I learned to swim. I
learned to play tennis myself and now I am good at it. But I never wanted to be a famous
athlete; it’s just too much work. I simply do sport to feel well, to have energy and to keep
fit. I love it how a good run in the morning gets me focused for the day.

Speaker B

You see, I run marathons for charity. It’s become quite popular now, you know. I started
by walking a marathon distance first but now I can run it and even make good time. My
last marathon I ran in the mountains on International Women’s Day to raise awareness
for women’s rights. Though I really like running, a marathon cause gives me more mo-
tivation to train. It’s like I know I am making a small change in some huge problem by
simply running.

Speaker C

I’ve wanted to start exercising for years but it just doesn’t happen. Um, in the morning
I can’t seem to make myself get up early to go to the fitness center before school and
after school I feel too tired and hungry. I am so busy with school work that it just seems
impossible to find the time for anything else. I guess I really would like to be more fit
and energetic but I don’t know how to begin. Some of my friends go to a fitness club
but I haven’t gone yet.

86

Speaker D

You know, my brother is a personal trainer at a fitness club. He helps people keep in
shape by choosing the correct fitness plan for them. He has these books of exercise
routines for all different types of people. He interviews his clients when they first hire
him and sets goals for them. Some of the people take his help very seriously; yet other
people look at his work skeptically and prefer to make their own plans. He wanted to
make a plan for me but I said no.

Speaker E

Oh, I love sport! Watching it, not doing! I am ready to go to a stadium any day and watch
a football match or a game of hockey. My favourite channel is the sports one! It is always
on when I am at home. Um, I watch all kinds of sports but my favourite is cross-country
skiing. I know all the leading athletes on the different teams and really get into cheering
our country’s team on. My mum often says I should go skiing myself but I prefer the sofa.

Speaker F

My dad is always saying I should spend more time behind books but what can I do? I really
love to play football. I can’t learn geometry when I hear a bunch of guys outside having a
good time playing ball. I drop all my homework and I am out of here. I tell my dad I might
be the next Ronaldo or Beckham but I don’t think he sees any future in that for me. He
says even football players need to be intelligent. Who knows, maybe he does have a point.

Bob: Hey, Sally, how’s it going?
Sally: Hi, Bob, all’s well, thanks. Listen, what are you doing this Saturday?
Bob: Not much, why?
Sally: There is this concert at the White Hall Saturday night at 7. Would you like to come

with me? I’ve got two tickets.
Bob: Who’s playing?
Sally: Dream Theater. Do you know them?
Bob: Nope, never heard of them.
Sally: Really? They’re a pretty old progressive rock band. Do you like rock music?
Bob: Not really. Rock music makes too much noise. It’s usually too loud and doesn’t

have much of a melody. Most of the time, I can’t even make out the lyrics.
Sally: I’d have to disagree with you there. There are, of course, rock bands that don’t

make quality music and are very hard to listen to but some bands are amazing. Many
rock musicians are highly professional and have extensive music education, so it’s a
pleasure to listen to them.
Bob: I don’t know, Sally, the rock I’ve heard hasn’t impressed me. I am more of a clas-
sical music fan. I enjoy a good symphony played by a professional orchestra. Don’t
you think it is fun to hear all these instruments come together in harmony?
Sally: Yeah, but classical music seems so boring, Bob! May be I just have to learn to
understand it or something. So far I’ve been listening to rock and some jazz, maybe I
should download a couple of symphonies for a change. Any you’d recommend?
Bob: No need to download, Sally. There is a radio station Classic FM that plays nice
pieces nonstop. You can check that out first to see if you like any of it and then you
can download your favourites.
Sally: Hey, that’s a great idea, Bob. I’ll do that when I do my art project for school to-
morrow. Maybe classical music will inspire me in the right direction and I’ll make an

87

awesome piece of art. But since I am willing to try your favourite music, how about
you return the favour and come with me to the concert on Saturday? You might like
it after all.
Bob: Sounds fair. Maybe I’ll change my mind about rock music and start listening to
some of it more often. What shall I wear to the concert?
Sally: Just normal clothes, jeans and a T-shirt. Last time I went to their concert, some
people were dressed in leather and chains and others were in suits and dresses. I
prefer to stick to casual.
Bob: Ok, great. I will come by your house around 6 on Saturday.
Sally: Perfect. See you then.

Задания 3—9

Presenter: Hello everybody and welcome to our program “5 minutes with a star”! Today
we have a well-known actor Greg Jones. Hello, Greg, so nice to see you today, thanks
for coming.

Speaker: Hi, everybody! It’s my pleasure being here with all of you today.
Presenter: So, your acting career is on another high at the moment – to what do you

attribute this?
Speaker: I think having a happy home really helps. It took me a long time to achieve that.

I used to put a lot of pressure on myself to accomplish things… make money, gain
experience… And I wasn’t a proper father and husband when I was younger. I learnt a
lot from my failures in the past. Now, with my wife Dina, I’ve been able to realize what
really matters and devote myself to her and to raising our daughter Marylen.
Presenter: I see. And do you keep in close touch with your older children?
Speaker: Yes. Actually, Dina is the person who brings everyone together. She doesn’t
have any resentment about my previous marriage. She got acquainted with my first
wife and it’s been really wonderful for me to see her be very open and want everyone
to feel appreciated.
Presenter: Is it tough to raise a young daughter in your sixties?
Speaker: Absolutely not! I have more time, I understand more about being a father, and
watching her grow up has been one of the greatest pleasures of my life. She’s an
amazing girl – very bright, very spirited. It’s the first time that I’ve really been able to
be the kind of father that I wanted to be, but because of my career ambitions, I never
allowed myself the chance to spend that kind of time with my older children.
Presenter: Speaking about your career, what was your first big ambition?
Speaker: Well, when I was younger I wanted to become a jazz musician, which got some-
how sidetracked when I was drafted into the army. After that it took a long time for
me to get any good acting roles until I started doing Westerns. It took many years,
even after I became quite famous, for me to understand what I really wanted to do.
Presenter: That’s interesting. And do you have any thoughts of retiring?
Speaker: Age is just a state of mind and I’m lucky as retirement isn’t enforced on ac-
tors and directors. I’d planned on not working after I was 39! But here I am at 69 and
enjoying working more today than I have ever done. I think I shall go on while I have
all that strength and energy.
Presenter: Do you feel you’ve learnt any lessons about life that you’d like to share with us?
Speaker: Life rarely goes the way you plan it. There are good things and bad things that
happen to you all the time and you have to be able to admit that, deal with it and
move on. When I was younger I was angry at the world, always full of ambitions, but
now finally I’ve been able to relax.

88

Presenter: Okay. And my final question. What do you see as your biggest accomplishment?
Speaker: Well … My life now is exactly how I hoped it could be 20 years ago. Lots of

things are important – my four children, professional success … But, I’d say, finding
a good partner in life is true happiness for me.

нимание того, о чём идёт речь;
• аудирование с извлечением запрашиваемой/нужной информации. Его цель —
извлечение из всего потока речи необходимой/интересующей информации;

2. 1 — С; 2 — А; 3 — В.
3. Возможный ответ: pack, suitcase, return, go home, travel, trip, flight, airport/railway

station, board the plane/train, air steward/conductor.
4. My parents never took me anywhere. On holidays we stayed home and watched

TV. You know, the most exciting trip I ever took as a kid was a 30-minute drive
across town to see my relatives. It was at Easter, it seems. I don’t think I’ve ever
even owned a big bag or a suitcase, and so I had no idea how to pack for a trip
when I had to travel on business two weeks ago. No one has ever taught me
how, you know.
5. Речь идёт о профессии учителя английского языка; особенность — работа в за-
рубежных странах, преподавание английского языка иностранцам.

I was thinking about spending my gap year teaching English abroad but I had second
thoughts about it. I was told that only experienced teachers can get a working visa,
coverage for their cost-of-living and a decent job. After reading some interviews on
what’s it like to teach English in immersion camps, I gave up on the idea completely.
That’s not what I’m ready to put up with. My parents are happy about that.

Speaker B

English is my major but the rivalry is so tense in the trade market now that I’m thinking
of going somewhere for a couple of years to gain more experience and improve my
teaching skills. Taiwan seems a perfect choice as everything is included for an inex-
perienced teacher — visas, accommodation and high salary. I’m worried about getting
a social life there — I speak only English and I wonder if I can find friends there apart
from my future students.

91

Speaker C
My uncle, David Dune, is a teacher, writer and runner. He is an educator with over
17 years of experience of teaching English as second and as a foreign language. He
has taught and presented in Korea, Canada, France, and Ukraine. He specializes in
Web 2.0 and using technology in the classroom. That must be an exciting life and the
only thing I can think about is following in his footsteps. I hope he’ll share some secrets
of being a good English teacher abroad.

Speaker D
People in my college are crazy about the idea of going to teach English somewhere in
Thailand, China and what not. I listened to their heated discussions very attentively and
understood it’s high risk. There are so many things to care about like visas, security,
medication and cultural barriers. I’d better stay in the US to serve my country. In my
view it’s more patriotic; besides, I’m not sure I can solve the problems connected with
moving to another country.

А. I literally see a new place every week. You see, I am a reporter for the “Travel”
magazine, so travelling is my lifestyle. I get to experience new places from all their
aspects: people, food, culture, traditions, um, all of it. You know, it’s a lot of fun but
still, there are times I’d give a lot to be sent to a different place. Like, I am not too
keen on eating snakes and spiders or sleeping in a hammock to keep away from
tarantulas. I had to do that at one point, you know.

В. I’ve never been on a package holiday myself. You know, I sell them to people every
day. People really like to have packaged deals when they have a beach holiday in some
foreign country. That way they don’t have to worry about accommodation and transpor-
tation. But it’s always been my dream to get one of the deals and spend 10 days on
the white sand under the burning sun. Instead, I continue to sell this dream to others.

С. We go on short road trips every month. I like to show my kids new places in our
area. We visit local museums, villages, monasteries and other fun spots. Let’s see,
sometimes we just take day trips but sometimes we stay overnight in a hotel. The
kids love hotels but they can be expensive. We often eat on the road, so we take
most of the food with us. You know, it saves us money that way. If we meet new
people on the road, we get acquainted and save contacts for later.

92

D. I travel often on business. My company has many partners in over 10 countries, so
I visit a new place almost every three months. Um, business trips aren’t long and
are rarely exciting, so for me I’d say travelling is tiring. So, when on holiday I prefer
to stay in my garden and tend to my flowers. I bet my kids aren’t too happy about
that, well, um, usually, they are upset with me for that, but I am sorry I just can’t
make myself get on a plane during my time off.

Speaker A
I really love travelling by train. I know that a lot of people find it very time consuming
but I just love it. I love the smell of the railway station and the sounds of the trains
about to leave. The whole atmosphere of a railway station is so romantic. Even if it’s
another boring trip to your grandmother for Easter holidays, I do feel an exciting ad-
venture may begin any moment. You will never get this sensation if you go by car or
by coach or by plane.

Speaker B
If you ask me, well, going by train is certainly not so fast as travelling by air or not so
comfortable as going by car. Still, I love travelling by train. In my opinion, it’s a very
relaxing way of traveling. I can read a book or a glossy magazine or just talk to some
fellow passengers if there are some nice people in the same compartment. Even if my
companions are boring people, I can look through the window and enjoy the views. It
gives me rest, really.

Speaker C
I sometimes have to travel by train and this is a complete nightmare for me. First, the
train seems to stop literally everywhere and it takes ages to arrive at the destination.
Secondly, there is nothing to do there. There are still many trains without TVs or anything
like that so if you have forgotten to take anything to read or your tablet PC, you’re done,
you’ll have to stare at whatever you are passing and pretend you love the landscapes.

Speaker D
I understand travelling by train is long and boring but for me it’s an extra chance to do
some work. I usually take my laptop with me and I don’t even notice the hours on the
train. You see, there’s always much homework to do for me and most trains nowadays
have free Wi-Fi, so I can prepare some report or search for necessary information or
do some additional reading for my school. My parents also do some work on the train,
like answering e-mails.

Speaker E
We often visit our relatives who live like maybe four hours by train away from us. My
mother doesn’t like driving that’s why I have to put up with trains as I can’t help it
really. At first I groaned and moaned about it, but my mom offered me to watch a

93

film and discuss it while on the train. We take turns to pick up a film and we watch it
with the help of our laptop. Time flies this way and it’s really interesting to exchange
opinions with mom.

Speaker F
I use trains sometimes but I do think it’s a sheer waste of time. Still, there is nothing
I can do about it because I have to travel alone. I don’t have a driving licence yet so
there is no other way I can travel. I find it boring but I guess I have just to grin and
bear it. I try to do something to kill time but usually I do nothing or sleep in my seat
if my fellow passengers aren’t too noisy. I wish I had a car but I have to wait until I
can get one.

Speaker A
All of my friends have their hobbies and I’m not an exception, of course. I enjoy drawing
and painting and I have been fond of it since I can remember myself. When I was a
child, I could spend hours quietly if my mom gave me paints or pencils and she must
have been very happy about that. I still give much time to my hobby. I don’t think my
future career will be connected with it but I think I will never give it up as it has be-
come a really strong habit.

Speaker B
I like jigsaws. I’ve got loads of them. This is a useless hobby as my parents say, very
impractical. Some puzzles are really expensive and since they are of a very good quality
I prefer them to cheap ones and my parents are not particularly happy about that. You
do it and that’s it, I find it boring to do a puzzle twice. Still, my parents buy puzzles
and jigsaws for me because they say a hobby is something you do for pleasure and
I’m grateful to them.

Speaker C
I love knitting. Some people think it’s a very good hobby because hand-made is top
fashion nowadays. Well, I can make something as a present to my relatives and friends
but basically I’m not very good at knitting. I can make only certain things so my choices
are very limited here. My mom thinks I make the same things over and over again vary-
ing only the colours but I don’t mind because I do it for meditation to relieve stress
after hard work at school.

Speaker D
I don’t have a hobby and I think I have never had one. My friends find it strange but
I believe people don’t really need it. Hobbies take too much of your time and some
hobbies need money investments too. As for me, I spend my pocket money on going
out or I can buy clothes sometimes. Speaking about free time, I don’t have any as I’m
really busy at school plus I help out my parents with my younger sister and it’s more
useful than doing puzzles.

94

Speaker E

I have a hobby, naturally, but at different ages I liked different things. I was a passion-
ate collector when I was a small kid and I remember I worried that my parents could
throw away my priceless collections of what they considered rubbish. Then my hobby
was reading, then sports, now it’s photos. I think it’s normal that people change hob-
bies during their life as their characters change too and you can’t do the same thing
your entire life.

Speaker F

My hobby is very typical for teenagers. I love listening to music. I know many people
don’t think it’s a real hobby because everybody listens to music but you can simply
listen or you can listen. It’s not easy to understand music if you ask me. I studied at
the musical school and I can still play some musical instruments but what I was inter-
ested in was the history of music, the rules of writing music. When you know about it,
you enjoy it more.

I’ll do that when I do my art project for school tomor-
row. Maybe classical music will inspire me in the right direction and I’ll make an awe-

95

some piece of art. But since I am willing to try your favourite music, how about you return
the favour and come with me to the concert on Saturday? You might like it after all.

Lucy: Hi, Peter. It’s nothing serious, actually. I just felt a bit sick in the morning, so

my mom let me stay at home.
Peter: You poor thing! And are you feeling better now?
Lucy: Yeah, much better, thank you. I guess it must have been the pizza that I ate

yesterday. That was the reason for my bad stomachache. I had too much. But now,
yeah, I feel all right. I think I won’t have to miss any more lessons this week.

Fragment 2

Peter: But you haven’t been to the doctor’s office, have you? Won’t you have prob-
lems at school because you missed classes? When I was ill last month, I brought a
medical certificate to school.

Lucy: Well, my mom called our class teacher, so I don’t think there will be any prob-
lems. Besides we don’t have many lessons on Wednesdays. How was Geography,
by the way? Did you take a test?

Fragment 3

Lucy: How was Geography, by the way? Did you take a test?
Peter: Oh, no, we didn’t, but we revised the material for the test. The teacher asked

several people to do exercises with the map of the UK at the blackboard, and then
we had a sort of contest in groups where we had to find different mountains, rivers
and lakes — the quicker the better, that was fun! And we also checked our home-
work and asked the teacher questions if we were not sure about the answers. You
know, I feel well-prepared for tomorrow’s test now.

Bill: Hi, Mary. Long time no see. How are the things?
Mary: Oh, hi, Bill. I’m okay, thanks. What about you?
Bill: Well, I’m fine but it seems to me you are not. You look down in the dumps. What’s

up?
Mary: Nothing, really. I’m just bored.
Bill: Bored? Come on, Mary, it’s our summer holidays. You must be enjoying your free

time. After all, you’ve deserved it. There’s no way you can be bored.
Mary: Well, Bill, I am bored and there’s nothing I can do about it. My school year was

filled with so many lectures and seminars and loads of homework and it seemed to
me I had enough on my plate. I was looking forward to having some rest, really. But
now I’m lost. I wonder why.
Bill: Oh, then I understand you. Your life was so hectic. Now your schedule isn’t so
packed and you feel as if you lost your focus. Am I right?
Mary: Yes, Bill, you are right. I almost feel depressed. Time flies but I’m unable to
relax for some reason. What’s wrong with me?
Bill: Mary, everyone has experienced boredom, believe me.
Mary: Including you? You are always so energetic.
Bill: Even me. It’s just high time for you to reach for something to distract you from
how you feel. Why not switch on the TV to make a start? There must be some in-
teresting show you can watch.
Mary: Oh, you know, I can’t stand TV. It makes me even more depressed.
Bill: Okay, sorry about that suggestion. Well, what about food? Try cooking something.
Or go visit a new café.
Mary: You’re joking. I’ll end up fat.
Bill: I see. Well, how about reading a book?
Mary: Books are so expensive these days. I read very quickly but I can’t afford buying
a book every day or so.
Bill: You don’t have to. You may contact our local library, I’m sure they can offer you
something interesting. Besides, your friends might lend you something.

98

Mary: Reading? I haven’t thought about it. But won’t it turn me into a real bookworm?

I mean reading during the academic year, reading on holidays.
Bill: That’s not the same. Come on, there must be dozens of books you felt like read-

ing but you didn’t have time to.
Mary: True. I say, Bill, why don’t you come to the library with me? You may help me.

You know everything about books, don’t you?
Bill: Well, I think I’ll be able to recommend something suitable for you. Are you free

at the moment?

Mary: Yes, I am.

Jane: Hi, Mike! It’s so good to see you finally. We’ve been missing you, you know.
Mike: Hi, Jane. It’s good to see you too. I’m down in the dumps, really.
Jane: Well, hospitals aren’t the best place in the world, that’s true. Is it so bad here?
Mike: Well, the personnel are kind and helpful. There are some unpleasant injections,

of course, but it’s not so bad. What’s really awful about being here is that I’m bored.
I don’t have anything to do!
Jane: If nothing else, you can sleep.
Mike: Very funny. At first I was enthusiastic about catching up with sleep as well. Now
I think I have slept enough for my entire life.
Jane: Reading perhaps? Oh no, somebody has got to bring you new books all the
time and take the ones you’ve read away otherwise you’ll have piles of books in
your ward everywhere.
Mike: I have my tablet with me so I’ve been surfing the Net but it has also become
boring in the end.
Jane: Still, Mike, you can’t have explored everything the Net has to offer. Why don’t you
check out the hundreds of great podcasts available? There are so many of them. Al-
most every subject matter is covered. You are bound to find something to your liking.
Mike: Jane, I used to think podcasts are a lot of fun for a person who is busy, yet I
am still bored. You know, like when you’re working on a tedious but necessary job
either at home or at work. Then a podcast can help keep you entertained while still
keeping you engaged with the task at hand. It’s not my case.
Jane: I’m afraid I can’t fully agree with you here, Mike. Podcasts are generally great
because you can listen to them anywhere and anytime. Besides, they’ll be great for
you now because you can easily start and stop them when you need to.
Mike: You are right, Jane! I can choose a podcast that is long or short or somewhere
in between. Either way if I get interrupted by a doctor or a visitor, I can simply press
pause and return to it later.
Jane: You can even create your own podcasts, you know. You are very good at Maths,
so why not offer some advice for people who don’t understand this subject?
Mike: Okay, I’ll think about it. Thank you, Jane. I guess I won’t be so bored next time
you come to visit me.
Jane: I hope so. Look, I’ve got to go because we are going to have a test tomorrow.

99

Mike: Bye, then, and good luck!
Jane: Thank you, I’ll certainly need it.

She’s an
amazing girl — very bright, very spirited.
Presenter: Do you feel you’ve learnt any lessons about life that you’d like to share with
us?
Speaker: Life rarely goes the way you plan it. There are good things and bad things that
happen to you all the time and you have to be able to admit that, deal with it and
move on. When I was younger I was angry at the world, always full of ambitions, but
now finally I’ve been able to relax.

100

Presenter: Okay. And my final question. What do you see as your biggest accomplish-
ment?

Speaker: Well … My life now is exactly how I hoped it could be 20 years ago. Lots of
things are important — my four children, professional success … But, I’d say, finding
a good partner in life is true happiness for me.

Presenter: So, Mary, how did you get the idea of cycling to the South Pole?
Mary: I’ve been looking at Antarctica for years, thinking I’d love to ski to the South

Pole. I found out that no one had ever cycled there and I wondered if it was pos-
sible. I researched the idea, and in March 2012 I cycled across Siberia’s Lake
Baikal as a test. I then trained in Norway and Iceland. I think that pedal power
is one of the most efficient means of human power, and so I wanted to see if this
was true even on snow and ice where historically skis have always been favoured.
About six months before I set off, in June 2013, I found out that there were two
other cyclists, a guy from Spain and an American man, attempting to do the same
thing as me, so I kept my plans very quiet.

came from experience. I also took a different route than my competitors. I don’t

Presenter: Today, in our “Meet a celebrity” weekly programme, we are talking to a

successful filmmaker Jim Slogan. Welcome, Jim!
Jim: Good afternoon, everyone. It’s good to be here, thank you for inviting me.
Presenter: So, Jim, did you want to be a filmmaker when you were growing up?
Jim: I grew up on a steady diet of science fiction. In high school, I took a bus to

school and I was always absorbed in a science fiction book, which took my mind
to other worlds. I had a deep interest in other worlds but didn’t have an idea of
where it’d take me in life. Whenever I wasn’t in school I was out in the woods, taking
“samples” — frogs and snakes — and bringing them back, looking at them under
the microscope. I was trying to understand the world and the limits of possibility.
Presenter: Hah, sounds like you could’ve become a scientist then.
Jim: Well, not really. I was an artist. I could draw and paint. And I found that it was
because of no video games, so I had to create these images in my head. You know,
we all did, as kids, read a book and made a picture in our heads. And so, my own
response was to paint, to draw alien creatures, alien worlds, robots, spaceships, all
that stuff.
Presenter: I see. So, in your art you had this combination of science and imagination
that eventually has led to movies, right?
Jim: Yes, when I chose a career as an adult, it was filmmaking because that seemed
like the best way to reconcile this urge I had to tell stories with my urge to create
images. Filmmaking was the way to put pictures and stories together. And, of course,
the stories that I chose to tell were science fiction stories.
Yes, most of your films are sci-fi and in all of them you used some highly complex
technology. Do you choose your plot to fit the technical possibilities or do you cre-
ate technology to suit your needs?
Jim: Usually we come up with ways to realize my film ideas. In one of my films we
created this water creature and we used computer generated animation. And this re-
sulted in the first computer animated character that was ever in a movie. I witnessed
something amazing — the global audience was in awe with this apparent magic. You
know, any really advanced technology is hard to tell apart from magic. I thought,
“Wow, this is something that needs to be used in the cinema art.” So, in my next
film we took that much farther. We created the liquid metal figure. We created magic
again, and we had the same result with an audience.

Presenter: Today in our studio we have Angie — the eight-time Grammy and two-time

Oscar winner. Hello, Angie!
Angie: Good afternoon. It’s a real pleasure being here today.

103

Presenter: As a world-famous singer, do you have any favourite records?
Angie: I’m very selective. If I hear a record once, I usually never listen to it again. I

rarely listen to music — unless it’s Billie Holiday or absolute classics like Mahler or
Symphony no. 10. Those are things I never get tired of.
Presenter: You have recently moved into a new house. Do you like it there?
Angie: This is my dream house. This is the refuge I’ve longed for since the days
when I shared a cramped Brooklyn apartment with my mother, brother and grand-
parents. Even after I became famous, I lived in a house I didn’t like. I looked out
my window and saw traffic going by. I never really saw the sky. Now I’m blissfully
happy.
Presenter: Do you realize what your voice and art have meant to the world?
Angie: At times, but it’s complicated, you know. On one hand, you’re talking about me
as a legend right now. On the other hand, I remember all my difficulties. And no
matter how many sold-out shows I do, I’ll also understand when my records don’t
sell as many copies anymore. I’ve been around for many years and I could believe
it if nobody came to see me. Luckily, it hasn’t happened yet.
Presenter: When did you know you had the voice?
Angie: When I was maybe 5 or 6 years old, the neighborhood girls would sit on the
stoop and sing. I was known as the kid who had a good voice and no father.
Presenter: I read that you resented your father for many years because he wasn’t
there.
Angie: I wouldn’t say resent, but maybe subconsciously. He died when I was 15 months
old. My mother didn’t talk much about him. When I asked her why, she said she
didn’t want me to miss him. My mother then remarried and my stepfather didn’t like
me, maybe because he had three kids from another marriage who didn’t live with
us. I tried to make him like me for a while. I tried calling him Dad and got him his
slippers at night when he came in. But did he like me? No way.
Presenter: You’re not only a singer; you’re also an actress and film producer. Why
have you pursued so many different roles in entertainment?
Angie: Maybe it’s something embedded in my genes. I’ve always needed to have a
creative outlet, whatever form it takes. And when I am passionate about something,
I take it on with intense commitment. By the way, I was an actress first, and only
started singing to pay my bills.
Presenter: You’ve been described as bossy and demanding. How do you respond to
that?
Angie: Those words would never apply to a man. I addressed this double standard
in a speech years ago when I said “A man is commanding; a woman is demand-
ing. A man is forceful; a woman is pushy. He’s assertive; she’s aggressive” and I
can go on. I insisted on one thing early on when I did my records and TV shows:
artistic control. That’s what mattered to me. I trusted directors like William Tyler
and Sydney Pollack. I both learned from them and was heard by them. But when I
wanted more artistic control, I started directing. It allows me to complete my own
vision.
Presenter: Have things changed since you started?
Angie: Frankly, I’m not sure how much has changed. Women aren’t paid as much as
men and it’s still difficult to get films made. However, making anything in England is
wonderful, because they were used to seeing women in powerful positions — with
the Queen as the head of state and Margaret Thatcher who was their prime minister.
Strong women weren’t a threat to them.
Presenter: Thank you.
