Happy Happy

Temple Sinai IN EVERY GENERATION

News From the Desk of Rabbi Sam Hollander

Volume 74 Number 4 While living in Jerusalem during a year of study, I was invited to join a
friend’s family for the Passover seder. In preparing for Passover, there is a
MAR - APR 2020 • ADAR - NISAN 5780 never-ending list of things to clean and food to cook. As I was busy pre-
paring my apartment, I was surprised when my friend asked me to send a
TOP NEWS INSIDE photograph of me as a child for the seder. Although it was one more thing
to add to the to-do list, I complied.
Teens on the Hill On seder night just before we began to recite the four questions, my friend
Welcoming New Members placed in front of each participant a photograph of that guest as a child.
Maintaining US-Israel Relations While there is a custom for the youngest child to ask the questions, my
Upcoming Events friend shared that the Talmud explains that if a person is alone on seder
Sell Your Chametz night, he or she should ask questions to himself or herself.
Together we all recited the four questions. I still can remember the experi-
ence of reciting the four questions while looking into the eyes of myself as a
child. What answers would I share with my younger self? Although we ask
the same four questions each year, we ourselves change from year to year.
Purim and Passover are both holidays that require preparation. Baking ha-
mantaschen, preparing favorite Passover dishes, offering matanot l'evyonim
(gifts to the needy), welcoming guests to a seder—we do a lot for others.
Yet, on Passover we say, “In every generation, a person must see oneself as if
they had come out of Egypt.”
How will you prepare yourself this year? While there is much to prepare for
the upcoming holidays, I want to challenge you to make some time to per-
sonally prepare. This Passover, what questions would you ask to the person
you were last year? How can you make the experience this year different
from previous years?
Using photographs at your Passover seder, is just one idea
of how to enrich your seder.
In leading up to Passover, I hope you will join us for sev-
eral opportunities within our community in the last week
of March to enhance your Passover seder. More details to
come. On behalf of the entire Temple Sinai family, I want
to wish Chag Sameach to you and your family!

PRESIDENT Although we have had such a mild winter thus far, I am still so excited for spring to
LAUREN GLADSTONE arrive. Purim and Pesach are my favorite holidays. Full disclosure—I just love freshly
baked hamantaschen! As spring approaches (still praying that we do not have a bliz-
zard in March!), I look forward to all of the new growth that begins to appear outside.
Grass begins to grow, buds form on the trees, and flowers begin to bloom from their
winter slumber.
The synagogue, however, does not hibernate! The building has been buzzing with so
much activity, and we’ve made many improvements to our security system, HVAC
replacement in the school wing, as well as the main office moving to the front of the
building.
A few of the amazing events planned here at Temple Sinai, our Board members have been busy working on:
•planning membership initiatives, •producing the 2020-2021 budget, •creating a bylaws committee, •planning our Scholar in
Residence weekend with Rabbi Josh Warshawsky, April 24-26, •preparing for our spring fundraiser with Oz Pearlman, May 3.
Temple Sinai would not be such a vibrant place—bustling with so much activity—if it wasn’t for our staff and congregants who
tirelessly work so hard to provide so many opportunities for us to connect. I welcome you to join us in creating more meaning-
ful opportunities. We cannot do it without your support. I look forward to seeing you at services or at one of the many activities
offered. I wish you all a Chag Purim Sameach and a Zissen Pesach!

'TIS THE SEASON

Ben Wachstein, Executive Director

And so, it begins...

Budget season is upon us at Temple Sinai (and most synagogues across the country). Budgets are the Torah of synagogue management.
Like Torah, our budget is a reflection of our values, a document that organizes our everyday operations into departments, systems, and
expectations. It is, truly, a holy covenant for our community.

SISTERHOOD - JEWISH LIVING

Joan Winokur

Soon we'll be happy, it will be Adar. Adar means Purim, the Megillah, dressing up, Purim Spiels and Hamantaschen. Fun and yum
to remind us things were not always easy for us but with G-d’s help, we overcame.
Bring the family to shul to hear the Megillah, have fun and “BE HAPPY”. Purim is on March 10th. Our day begins the evening
before. Come.
Once Purim comes, Pesach is a month away, on April 8th in the evening to be exact. This is the most celebrated holiday for Jews
around the world so clean, clean, clean, clean, change over your kitchen, (I’m sure Pesach is why the world does spring cleaning),
cook the “meichels” of the Hag and of your family, and prepare your most beautiful seder table. Then you’ll be ready to recount the
Exodus, share seder stories around the table and sing with gusto through the end of the seder.
To quote Baba at Pesach, “Oy, sis git tzi zein a Yid” - it is good to be a Jew when we can rejoice and celebrate our heritage through
the Hagim.

MAINTAINING US-
ISRAEL RELATIONS

Shira Weissbach, Director of Education

At Temple Sinai you’ve heard a great deal about the World Zionist
Congress elections and the potential implications regarding one bil-
lion dollars of funding that will be allocated to key institutions in Is-
rael. Another important election has also just taken place: the third
election of the Israeli Knesset in just a six month span.

Regardless of who is ultimately elected, there is a critical need to rein-
force that Israel should be a bipartisan issue for Americans. In Israel,
a common value for both the Blue and White and Likud parties (Blue
and White led by Benny Gantz and Likud led by Benjamin Netanya-
hu) is the safety of the state of Israel and little separates them in terms
of their plans for defense. The US/Israel alliance is based on a bond
of shared values and mutual interest and the need for Israeli security,
something that has been a long time bipartisan bridge. This is something we need to remind ourselves of in these politically charged times,
illustrated by the current refusal of some Democratic candidates to attend the recent American Israel Public Affairs
Committee (AIPAC) Policy Conference.

AIPAC has long provided a forum for political discourse on US-Israel relations on both sides of the aisle. Over the
years, I’ve personally had the opportunity to hear from both Republican and Democratic presidential candidates,
senators, and members of Congress who are all committed to the US-Israel alliance. The fact that we are seeing people
refusing to engage in dialogue is extremely concerning and is indicative of the trying political climate that currently
exists. We, as American Jews, have an obligation to engage in these critical issues that are impacting our communities
and to ensure that Israel doesn’t become a partisan issue.

COOK FOR A FRIEND

Our Cook for a Friend program is one of several dozen in the
area preparing Kosher Meals on Wheels. Our program serves
seniors who wish to age in place, and live independently in their
homes. Our group meets monthly on a Thursday morning, and
we prepare approximately 140 dinners, which are then delivered
to the Klein JCC for distribution. In all, we are proud to say that
the program produces and distributes approximately 50,000
meals per year.

How to get involved:
We’d love to have you participate, whether it’s every month or
just occasionally. The preparations begin in the Temple Sinai
kitchen from 6:45-9:30am. If you can't get there right at 6:45am,
please join us anyway as there is always plenty to do. You can
also volunteer for the Kosher Meals on Wheels program by pick-
ing up meals from the Klein JCC and delivering them to the el-
derly recipients.

COSTUMES,
CARNIVALS
& CHERRY
HAMANTASCHEN

Beth Rabinowitz,
Director of Early Childhood Education

Throughout the year, we Jews celebrate many holidays. Some
we favor more than others. Don’t let the rabbis know, but I’m
not a huge fan of Passover and fasting for Yom Kippur isn’t on
the top of my list either. Though I still celebrate and under-
stand the importance of all holidays, my favorite is Purim. Just
knowing Purim is around the corner, I can feel the excitement
in the synagogue brewing. Who doesn’t love a cherry haman-
taschen and dressing up in a costume? Ok—not everyone loves
dressing up, but hamantaschen!
I could write a long list of why I love being a Jewish educator,
but when I see families together celebrating a Jewish holiday I
am always reminded of why I chose this profession. Most chil-
dren love a good carnival with the games, face painting, junk
food and prizes. The carnival is synonymous with the word Pu-
rim. As adults, we have fond memories of going to carnivals,
and sharing these experiences with our children which is truly
the best. Each year synagogues create exciting programming
to entice its members to celebrate as a congregation. This year,
Purim falls on the perfect day to create an
old fashioned Purim Carnival. There might
not be those dreaded fish in a bag anymore,
but I promise you there will be games,
crafts, a Purim parade, and, of course, ha-
mantaschen. Bring out your entire family,
invite friends, and spend the day creating
these incredible moments as a family.

Before Passover, our homes are cleaned
thoroughly. On the evening before the first
night of Passover (this year, Tuesday, April
7), we search our homes for any signs of
leavened items. But because our homes
have been cleaned so well, traces of
leaven, such as a few crumbs of bread, are
placed in the corners of our homes and we
“search” for them. A candle is lit to use as a
searchlight and the children lead the
parents through the house for the search.
All particles of leaven are placed in a paper
bag, so that they may be burned on the
morning of the first Seder.

Recite the following blessing before you begin
your search:

BLESSED ARE YOU, ADONAI OUR GOD,
RULER OF THE UNIVERSE, WHO
SANCTIFIED US WITH YOUR

COMMANDMENTS, COMMANDING US
TO REMOVE ALL HAMETZ.

After completing the search, the crumbs,
together with the receptacle used to collect
them, are put away in a safe place until the
following morning when they are burned in a
ceremony called Biyur Hametz, the burning of
the leaven. While tradition has it that we are to
burn the hametz, if that is not possible, it can
be disposed of in another manner. After the
burning or disposing of the hametz, the
following is recited:

ANY KIND OF LEAVEN
THAT IS IN MY POSSESSION THAT I HAVE

NOT SEEN OR REMOVED SHALL BE
CONSIDERED NON-EXISTENT OR
AS DUST OF THE EARTH.

This year, the burning of the hametz takes
place Wednesday, April 8, 2020.

and friend battling cancer. They raised a few thousand dollars and felt
a whole lot of happiness doing it. Nathan could not be more excited for
this special day and to share it with his friends and family.
Isabel is a 6th grader with a huge heart and a smile that lights up the
room. She attends Sandy Run Middle School and Pinemere Camp in
the summer. She loves to spend time with her friends and family. Isabel
also has a deep love for all animals. Isabel and Nathan made a big splash
with their mitzvah project and will always remember the process and
difference they made in their friend Jacob’s life. They both worked hard to organize the mitzvah project and to find the connection to the
Jewish community in Upper Dublin. Isabel cannot wait to read from the Torah and become a Bat Mitzvah.
