OUR MISSION
EMPOWER AND ENRICH OUR COMMUNITIES
OUR VISION
OPEN DOORS, FREE ACCESS, COMMUNITY
LETTER FROM THE COUNTY LIBRARIAN
Libraries are essential to our communities, offering free access to
educational and health resources, the Internet, and a safe and free
refuge for those who need shelter. During times when media
streaming is taking over the way individuals find enjoyment, it bares
noticing that libraries continue to be a beacon of information where
more than just books unite people from all walks of life.
In 2019 OC Public Libraries signed up 86,761 new cardholders and
loaned 7,900,986 books, DVDs, audiobooks and other library items. We
had over 2 million hours of Internet usage in our 32 libraries, and over
1 million eBooks, eAudiobooks and eMagazines were checked out. 500
people attended the 13th annual Literary Orange on April 6th to hear best-selling authors Tara Conklin,
Martha Hall Kelly and Alan Brennert, along with 50 authors of various genres. The first laptop lending kiosks
were installed at the Brea, Costa Mesa Donald Dungan and La Habra libraries. Over the summer, 20,564 free
lunches were served to children to help mitigate the harmful effects of poverty on students’ health and
wellbeing. In December OC Public Libraries rolled out ecards, allowing those who want to borrow only digital
resources immediate access to over 40,000 eBooks and over 30,000 eAudiobooks. Photos and videos about
the history of lifeguarding and surfing in Orange County were added to OC Stories, preserving and sharing
digital access to unique collections that tell local community stories.
These are just some of the ways OC Public Libraries continues to support our mission of empowering and
enriching our communities. From providing free popular fiction and nonfiction, DVDs, children’s books, basic
Internet, WiFi and computer literacy to ESL classes, storytimes, STEAM and coding programming for
elementary school children, book clubs, afterschool activities for children and teens, a genealogy speaker
series and programs for seniors, there is a range of programs to foster literacy, life skills and educational
attainment while promoting community connections.
Our libraries provide assistance with job searching and filling out applications while people from all over the
world find the library a valuable place for developing language skills and communication. OC Public Libraries
has multilingual books to help English learners, as well as collections in Chinese, Japanese, Korean,
Vietnamese, Arabic, Russian and Spanish. In 2020 we’ll host voting centers and ballot boxes and help our
communities understand the importance of being counted for the U.S. Census.
As we begin 2020, we welcome you to our libraries where knowledgeable staff can recommend a book,
provide information for an assignment, or connect you to community resources. Library staff and volunteers
are dedicated, hard-working and passionate--they empower and enrich our communities. We want our
communities to thrive, learn and explore, while reinforcing their sense of belonging. From teens after school
to seniors at book clubs, to helping families prepare children for Kindergarten, to those who need access to
reliable Internet-- the library is a welcoming place for everyone.
Sincerely,
Julie E. Quillman
