Framework

Carolina Excellence in Action is a co-curricular

ideas and experiences.

Students are encouraged to leverage their involvement to
explore who they are, DISCOVER their personal brand, and
develop a record of their accomplishments.

As a co-curricular framework, Carolina Excellence
inspires TRANSFORMative learning and skill development

Measuring Learning & Development

Students’ responses to common survey items were averaged across
programs to form performance indicators of learning and development.
Higher values indicate stronger perceptions of learning, and demonstrate
the impact of our work in Student Affairs.

After participating in (name of program),
I am better equipped to (competency).

Note the gap between Total # of Programs Mapped to the Competency and Total #
of Programs Contributing to the Indicator.

Every program isn’t assessed every year, but units should have an assessment plan outlining
when each program will be assessed. Which programs are you assessing this year?

The % of programs mapped to a competency AND contributing to its’
performance indicator ranges between a low of 13% for Civic Involvement
and a high of 82% for Wellness & Resiliency.

Do many of your unit’s programs map to the same competency? Are you willing to
champion assessment for that competency this year?

Most programs used one or two survey items to measure students’ perceptions
of learning as it related to a specific competency.

Can we more effectively measure learning without necessarily increasing the number and/or
length of surveys we implement? When possible, consider employing direct measures!

Five of our 11 indicators are based on 5 or fewer total survey items, and
5 are based on 15 or more.

Ideally, our indicators would be based on students’ engagement in more of the programs
offered across Student Affairs. How will you contribute this year?

Moving Forward

Carolina excellence in action is providing students with
the tools and resources they need to engage deeply in
co-curricular experiences, and make connections between
learning in and outside of the classroom. The moving parts
have come together and its time to focus on growth.

12

2017-18 Goals

In 2017-18 our goals include:

- increasing student engagement with CEIA
- increasing staff engagement with Heel Life
- launching the Carolina Excellence App
- mapping and including Student Org events as part of CEIA
- evaluating & streamlining structure/processes

13

Action Steps...

Staff who implement programs and learning opportunities:
Map each appropriate program or learning opportunity you implement
to no more than 3 CEIA competencies. Write measurable learning
outcomes (aligned with mapping) for each program or opportunity.
Identify method(s) for assessing your learning outcomes.
Consult with the person who leads assessment planning in your
department to establish a timeline for when the program(s) or
opportunity(ies) you implement should be assessed.
Create the learning opportunity in Heel Life, implement and track
attendance.
Assess program(s) and close the loop!
