as Associate Pastor

Introducing

Katherine Hatting

“I believe I am called to serve a
congregation where I am able to
teach the Word of God in various
modes and give pastoral care with
the compassion of Christ.”
~ Kat Hatting

Education & Experience

Kat Hatting is a native Minnesotan who has called central
Iowa ‘home’ for the past 14 years. Her first career was in
sports medicine, earning a B.A. in Athletic Training from
Bethel University and a M.S. in Human Physiology from
the University of Oregon, before moving to Iowa to work at
Simpson College as a professor and athletic trainer. In Iowa,
she met her husband, Chad, and they were married in 2011.
Kat opted to stay home when their children, Levi and Esther,
were born. During this time, Chad and Kat served as the
co-directors of the youth group at Westview Church in
Waukee, Iowa. She eventually felt called to full-time ministry
and began her 5-year seminary journey while working part-
time as the Director of Adult Discipleship at Westview. In the
spring of 2022, she graduated from Western Theological
Seminary with a Master of Divinity degree.

Favorite Bible Verse

Deuteronomy 6:4-5 Israel, listen! Our God is the Lord!
Only the Lord! Love the Lord your God with all your heart,
all your being, and all your strength.

Faith Journey

Kat is a life-long Christian, having grown up in a Baptist church, and
attended churches of various denominations until she settled in the
Reformed tradition at Westview, thanks to her husband’s Dutch
Reformed roots. VBS, church camp, youth group, and mission trips
formed her youth, and she found her closest friends in Iowa through
Bible studies and small groups. Kat is passionate about helping people
discover God’s purposes for their lives, rooted in their identity in Christ.
She loves learning and teaching, making connections between Scripture
and ordinary life, and singing Hebrew blessings. She will soon be
ordained as a minister and is excited to receive her first call as a pastor.

Family

Kat’s favorite relaxing hobby is cross stitching, preferably while watching
a crime drama or the latest Star Wars series. Together, Kat and Chad
love to play tabletop board games, listen to podcasts about faith and
science, and keep a scorebook at baseball games. Forever an Oregon
Duck, you can find her tuning in to college football games on Saturdays
in the fall. Chad works remotely from home, managing computer servers
for Principal Financial. Levi (age 9) is an engineer and artist who loves
Minecraft, LEGOs, and reading Harry Potter. Esther (age 7) is a social
butterfly who loves music, dance, animals, and as many play dates with
friends as her parents can schedule.

Words About Kat

I was introduced to Kat when her now-husband was going on a mission
trip to Uganda with my husband, and our relationship deepened through our
worship together at Westview. She ardently seeks to listen to the Lord. She
has enriched the lives and perspectives of our members. Kat teaches with
grace, humility, and the authority of Christ. I love watching her preach. She
has the ability to profoundly impact the world around her, and loves deeply.
– Jodi Rhone, Founding Partner, Canary Consulting Group
I have known Kat Hatting as a creative, patient teacher and a wise, life-
giving friend. Her presence is spacious, her wit quick, and her leadership
brave. She invites out the best in those around her and has pointed me,
relentlessly and humbly, in the way of Jesus. – Jaimi Vander Berg, Friend
Kat’s warm and welcoming personality made me believe that myself and
others of the congregation would feel comfortable opening up right away. I felt
she would fit in great with our members, but also challenge us to new ways
of thinking in faith and in life. – Monica Holmes, First Pres APNC
Kat’s adult education coordination and child/youth education experience
provide her a great background to coordinate those ministries at FPC.
– Bill Blake, First Pres APNC
Even at our first zoom meeting I could feel Kat’s love of God, her enthusiasm
and passion for sharing Jesus’ love, and what it would mean to her to be given
the opportunity to do so. Becoming a member of a family-oriented, Christ-
centered community is important to Kat and Chad, knowing this is where their
own children will be nurtured. With all that Kat brings, I believe First Pres can
offer Kat, Chad, Esther and Levi a place to be loved and cherished in return.
– Mary Kinsey, First Pres APNC
