MATTHEW QUINN IS HAVING A MOMENT. Known for his el-
egant eponymous collection, the multitalented kitchen designer
recently celebrated announcing the upcoming opening of a De-
sign Galleria Kitchen and Bath Studio showroom in Nashville's

new 45,000-square-foot design studio and released Quintessential
Kitchens and Spaces Volume II, a roundup of some of his most no-
table projects. Featured in its pages is a stunning kitchen, offi ce
and butler’s pantry that Quinn designed for a longtime client in
Buckhead—their fourth collaboration.

Renovated by architect Norman D. Askins, the client’s brick
Georgian abode leans traditional—for example, the front foyer’s
black-and-white marble fl oor—yet the kitchen’s steel-framed
fl oor-to-ceiling window overlooking the backyard speaks in a

more modern dialect. Inspired by the mix, Quinn pushed his
client to think differently. “My client had always done cherry
kitchens with black countertops,” Quinn says. “I wanted to
break the mold.”
It didn’t take the wife long to get on board. When Quinn

unveiled his rendering depicting the black ceiling and painted
center island, she “screamed with excitement,” he recalls. The
black elements are juxtaposed by bleached cherry cabinetry and
quartzite countertops. “It has that yin and yang that relates re-

ally well to the rest of the house,” Quinn says.
In between the cabinets, a custom gun-
metal steel hood with stainless steel detailing
and brass rivets creates a striking focal point
that complements the mix of metals used

throughout, including nickel hardware and
a pair of overscale bronze lanterns above the
island. “I love mixing metals,” Quinn says. “It

TIPS FROM THE TRADE

Atlanta designer Anna Braund offers the follow-
ing advice when injecting a lacquered fi nish into
today’s homes:
Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles: What questions
do you need to ask an artisan or painter be-

fore hiring someone to create a lacquer fi nish?
Anna Braund: The preparation is as important as
the artistry when applying the lacquer. Any sur-
face must be fi nely sanded and prepared to accept

the layers of high gloss. It’s important to query
any artisan about the full process to ensure proper
preparation and application.
AH&L: What’s your favorite area of the home
to use a lacquer fi nish and why?

Braund: I love to lacquer ceilings because the pro-
cess immediately elevates the formality of a space
and the fi nish is further enhanced by natural
light, thereby resulting in a total effect of subtle

sophistication. Whether day or night, rooms with
lacquered ceilings glow.
AH&L: Do certain colors resonate better in
lacquer than others, and if so, why?
Braund: With proper lighting, all elements will be
enhanced; however, irrespective of how light or

dark the color is, cleaner colors gain refl ection.

PERHAPS I OUGHT NOT TO MENTION IT, but we’re in

the throes of an election year, and if the past few months
are any indication, the coming year is going to be acrimoni-
ous to say the least. Although we may not always agree on
politics, there is one area of commonality that many Atlan-
tans share, and that is our love of design. I would argue that

not only is Atlanta one of the most design-savvy cities in
the country, it is also one of the least aesthetically dogmatic.
Traditional, contemporary and all of those decorative points
of view between the two are well-represented here, and

even though each of us may feel strongly about one style
over another, I have yet to see a fistfight break out over dif-
ferences in decorating.
Take color, for example. Decades ago, most Atlanta homes
were awash in rich colors, from sunny yellows to regal reds.

Later, color was somewhat banished from the scene and
designers and their clients embraced neutral color palettes
that were mostly creams and taupes. But today, there isn’t
any one color scheme that is deemed more acceptable

than another, and you only have to look at the pages of this
magazine to see that. From pale to vivid tones, Atlantans
are embracing almost every color—and noncolor—under
the rainbow. The same goes for fabrics. Floral chintzes are
creeping back into some interiors, perhaps to the chagrin

of the modernists. On the flip side, sleek, contemporary tex-
tiles—usually in those shades of gray that the traditionalists
find so chilly—are finding favor in other homes. And yet,
these diverse looks all manage to coexist peacefully. Even

HONORARY CHAIR

A N N E W I L L I N G H A M

The Cathedral Antiques Show is very pleased and privileged to
announce Anne Willingham as the 2020 Honorary Chair.

An engaged and dedicated Cathedral member for 56 years,
Anne has worked tirelessly with the Cathedral Antiques Show
Committee in many different capacities, such as with the Tour
of Homes. In addition to the many hours of time she has given
to the Show, she has also been active in other ministries of St.
Philip’s, including volunteering at the information desk since
January 2005, helping cook and serve dinner every fi rst Sunday
night at the Peachtree-Pine Shelter and as a member of the St.
Nicholas Guild.

Anne was born in Rome, Georgia, but has lived her entire
adult life in Atlanta. She and her late husband, Dr. Robert
Willingham, have six children and 14 grandchildren. When
Anne and her husband joined the Cathedral in 1963, they
knew they had found their home here, with Dr. Willingham
serving several terms on the Cathedral Chapter and as a board

member of Cathedral Towers.

Anne tells us, “I am always amazed at the talent and hard work
of the women who give so unselfi shly of their time and talent. I
am humbled and grateful to be asked to be a part of this group.
It is a joy just to be around them and I hope some of their
talent and knowledge will rub off on me!”

The Cathedral is honored to recognize Anne Willingham as
the 2020 Honorary Chair for her many years of service and
devotion to St. Philips and the Cathedral Antiques Show.

With a reputation for impeccable taste, an ability to
incorporate classic elements into contemporary style and an
intuitive understanding of client’s needs, John S. Banks
Interiors is synonymous with fi ne homes throughout Atlanta
and the Southeast. John S. Banks Interiors can transform your
idea of a perfect sanctuary into a tangible reality that reveals
your personality and lifestyle. Designing a house that you can’t
wait to come home to everyday is at the heart of this
philosophy.

John received his bachelor’s degree from the University of
Mississippi and post-graduate in interior design from the Art
Institute of Atlanta. His experience designing the interiors of
some of Atlanta’s most prestigious homes is complemented by
more than 10 years work on major home renovations in the
Buckhead community. The Cathedral Antiques Show has had
the benefi t of featuring John’s homes twice on its ever-popular

Cathedral Tour of Homes. John’s advice is to give a room a
dressy casual look, introduce antiques sparingly, then pair with
transitional fabrics that aren’t staid, and add contemporary art
or furniture.

A communicant of the Cathedral since 1979, John has worked
tirelessly year after year with the Cathedral Antiques Show to
fi nd fabulous tour homes and speakers. He is a delightful person
and a talented designer. The 2020 Cathedral Antiques Show is
proud to recognize John as our 2020 Honorary Design Chair!

Moving in the Spirit is an award-winning creative youth

development program that uses dance to teach children and
teens ages 3–18 the social, emotional and cognitive skills they
need to thrive.

Through programs that integrate high-quality dance
instruction with performance, leadership and mentor
opportunities, Moving in the Spirit impacts 300 young people
annually in Atlanta, encouraging them to overcome the ob-
stacles they face each day and realize their highest potential.

Programs are delivered by experts with master’s and doctoral
degrees in counseling, dance, education and dance/movement
therapy. We are proud that seniors at Moving in the Spirit
graduate on time from high school AND pursue college or
vocational training. Ultimately, students leave Moving in the
Spirit as confi dent, resilient and compassionate leaders, poised
to succeed beyond the stage and make a difference in their own
communities.
