foundational skills, and community education”

Strategic Initiatives

Initiative 1: Improve Prosperity
The College will improve the success of its students, graduates, and programs. Over three
years, improvements to student employability or transferability are expected. Review and
analysis of its programs and degrees is important.

Initiative 2: Improve Access
The College will seek to improve both the quantity and range of student populations enrolling at
KCC. Over three years, improvements to recruiting, marketing and advising systems are
anticipated; changes in physical campus(es) are recommended, and agreements with public
schools and universities will be negotiated to facilitate the path from k-12 to certificates and
degree completion.

Initiative 3: Enhance reputation for excellence
The college will enhance its reputation both locally and statewide through unique programs, in
addition to enhanced customer service and campus quality. Over the years, changes in and
enhancements to funding sources and revenue streams, academic review and development,
employee training or incentives are expected. Foundational systems such as technology
infrastructure, human resource policies and physical plant maintenance are very important to
upholding a reputation for excellence.

Initiative 4: Increase community partnerships
The college will actively reach out to organizations and agencies for internships, partnerships
and agreements that result in opportunities for student success. Also expected are events that
involve public participation on campus.

Initiative 5: Improve use of thoughtful planning
The College will employ data, analysis and strategic planning in its budgeting and goal-setting.
Over three years, increased accessibility to useful data is expected.

Faculty Offices
Office space will be designated by Academic Affairs. All keys to offices, desks, and cabinets that
are checked out by facilities must be returned if you leave KCC’s employment. Please keep in
mind that space may be shared with other faculty. Link to: Campus Maps

Student Drop-Off and Pick-Up of Finals
PLEASE do not ask students to drop off or pick up work at your mailbox, on your office door, or in
a box by your office. In the past, loss of privacy (not to mention FERPA violations), pilfering, and
exuberant custodial work have created problems. Instead, have your students see you during your
office hours or the next term.

Mailboxes
When paper correspondence is addressed to you, you’ll find it in the mailbox assigned to you.
Mailbox assignments may be changed each term so check for your name to identify which is
yours. Mailboxes are located in the Building 3 breakroom.

Phones
All offices and faculty areas have telephones and all are on the same system with an 880 prefix.
Dial the three digit extension (last three numbers) when using a campus phone to reach an
extension or dial 9 and the phone number for an off-campus line. You will be assigned a long
distance call code. The Desktop Specialist will help you setup your voice mail messages and
provide an overview of the phone functions.

Campus Rooms/Facility

Maintenance and Repair
The Facilities department is in charge of keeping classrooms and other KCC facilities clean and
functional. If something is missing, broken, dirty, or otherwise unsatisfactory about your classroom
or its furniture, submit an email to [email protected] to alert Facilities that there is a
problem.

Facility Use Request
When you want to reserve a room on campus for special use (e.g., a review session, an extra
class meeting), please ask and don’t just use an empty room.

 To schedule review sessions, extra class meeting, lab use, etc contact Sylvia Rosandich at
[email protected] or 880-2220.

 For information, forms and to schedule club meetings or community events see the Using
KCC Facilities webpage https://www.klamathcc.edu/Community/Facilities

You must fill out the online form to reserve a room at Facility Use Form.

Employee ID/Key Cards
Photo identification cards are obtained through security/facilities personal located in Building 3.
IDs are required and should be kept on your person when you are on campus. They are also
required to check out items from the LRC, and to access the workrooms and classrooms.

Textbooks
Faculty members are issued texts for courses taught. All issued textbooks and reference books or
other materials remain property of KCC and must be returned upon termination of employment with
the college or if you are no longer teaching that course.

Texts are selected by the faculty. Additional materials for courses may be listed on the syllabus as
optional or required. Your Dean and/or the Faculty Lead compile the class textbook spreadsheet
for the student textbook order and submits the order to the campus bookstore. Many faculty order
instructor copies of needed textbooks from the publisher, this practice is encouraged. For more
information on textbooks look up your course at the KCC bookstore link
http://bookstore.klamathcc.edu/SelectTermDept.aspx or contact your Dean.

Instructors may advise students that certain books are available from sources other than the campus
bookstore; however, because some grant and scholarship recipients MUST buy their books at the
KCC bookstore, an order should be placed with the Bookstore for all texts and materials needed for
the course.

Duplicating Services
You can access the copiers located in various locations on campus. Every employee is issued a copy
code during new employee orientation. Generally, copy charges are charged to your department
budgets.

14 | P a g e

Typical copy setting used by faculty:
• Single or double sided copies of multiple originals
• Color or black-and-white copies
• Stapled

• Collated
• Three-hole punch

Supplies
Buildings 3 and 6 each have a workroom. Supplies are available in the workrooms and in the
supply closet in building 3. The most common supplies used by faculty are dry eraser markers,

folders, tablets, pens, pencils, etc. Link: Campus Maps. Portal Link: KCC Logos
and Electronic Letterhead (Links to an external site.

For supplies that must be ordered, contact Administrative Assistant to Deans, Adela Taylor,
[email protected], 880-2229

Non-Standard Class Supplies
If you need something for instructional purposes that is not supplied, contact your Dean to see if
such a purchase can be approved. Remember that you cannot simply go buy something and expect
reimbursement. The process does not work this way.

TOOLS & TRICKS OF THE TRADE

Faculty Forms
Several forms needed by the faculty are located on the SharePoint Portal. Check out this link
for a listing of available forms.
Portal Link: Forms

Course Syllabus Template
All courses have used a course syllabi template.
The templates are designed to help us accomplish the following:

 Provide consistency and clarity for students regarding course outcomes.
 Simplify assessment of outcomes.
 Enhance KCC’s ability to maintain accreditation.
 Enable Academic Affairs to run more smoothly.

Syllabi are to be used by all part-time and full-time faculty. Syllabi inform students about what
is expected of them to meet course requirements and must be disseminated to students in all
courses in an appropriate written form e.g., hard copy or Web version. These documents help to
maintain consistency in the department’s curriculum. You will need to individualize it with your
contact information, as well as your grading policies and schedule of assignments. Some parts of
a syllabus may not be changed when creating an individual course syllabus including: course
description and objectives.

You may want to email your syllabus directly to your students (best to wait until a day or so
before classes begin, as your Class List may change), or hand out on the first day of class. You
should also post your syllabus to the course syllabus link in MyKCC and Canvas.

Key Beginning of the Term Items to keep in Mind
Requirement

1. E-mail electronic syllabi to Adela Taylor: [email protected]
Note: File name should be in Course # (Lastname) Term Yearformat:

Example: SPE 111(Orendorff)FA16

2. Send Early Alerts to drop students for non-attendance during Week 1.
Note: Students will not disappear from your roster until Sunday evening.

3. Submit Mid-Term Grades via MyKCC.

20 | P a g e

Individual Course Syllabus
Each course section you teach must be given a syllabus that follows the course syllabus template.
One syllabus for each different course you teach is kept on file to answer questions students and
others have about your course. An electronic copy of your syllabi must be emailed to the Dean’s
Administrative Assistant ([email protected]) prior to the start of each term.

Contact information: [email protected] 541-880-2229. See your Dean if you have any
questions regarding the nature or use of the course syllabi.

All students should receive a copy of your syllabus on the first day of classes, or when they
enroll in your class, so take extra copies with you through the first two weeks of the term. After
the enrollment period ends, you may want to refer any student who needs another copy of the
syllabus to your course website through MYKCC or by adding files to Canvas. Posting a copy
in either of these two places will avoid the need to make more copies.

Protect yourself and the department by ensuring that every student in every section receives
a syllabus. You should also go over the syllabus with your students. Many of them,
especially those new to college, do not realize the importance of this document.

SharePoint
SharePoint is used to store, track, and manage electronic documents.

Accessing KCC’s SharePoint Portal
Your login for the SharePoint portal, where we house an increasing number of KCC
documents, is the same login you use for MyKCC. Faculty can access the SharePoint portal
in at least two ways.

Option 1: Use the URL for the portal, and log in with the same username and
password you use to log in to MyKCC. You may want to create a bookmark in your
Internet Browser, so you don’t have to remember the URL.

https://info.klamathcc.edu/SitePages/Home.aspx

Option 2: Log in to MyKCC, and choose the Faculty tab.
Click on the Instructor Resources link, and then click on the SharePoint Portal link.

After week 1 when should I use Early Alerts?

Students who appear to be having difficulty should be reported immediately. You can submit early
alerts the first week of classes and throughout the term.

Reasons to Refer:
1. Academic and personal difficulties related to learning
 Low grades
 Low test Scores
 Missing assignments
 Attendance/tardiness

2. Referral to KCC or community resources
 Financial- Books/Supplies
 Financial- General Concern

Waitlists
If a class is full (closed), students may put their names on an “electronic waitlist.”
Registration Waitlists will be turned off about two days before the start of the Term for the class. In
other words, they turn off the Friday before the week the class begins, whether the class starts on
Monday, Tuesday, or even Saturday.
Be sure to check out your Wait List (logon to MyKCC)

You may use this Wait List as a guide for whom to give permission to register late for your class.
However, being on the Wait List does not guarantee registration in a class. Students are typically
added to the course from the waitlist by chronological order of registering. Students can fill out a
form available in student services during the first week of registration to allow late registration.
Students cannot register late by themselves. They need instructor permission.

The Early Alert will be sent to the student, the instructor, AND Student Services for them to begin
intervention protocol.

Instructors may approve extensions to the registration period on a limited basis by signing
Add/Drop Forms.

Late Enrollment

Guidelines for processing late enrollment are listed below:

 Faculty is under no obligation to grant late enrollment for a class.
 Students need to see an Enrollment Services Representative to process a Late Enrollment

forms.
 An Instructor’s signature is required to add the course.
 If the student’s name does not appear on your class roster prior to the next class session, please

ask for a copy of his/her class schedule, check your class list on the Web to verify enrollment.
To see your class list. Logon to MyKCC, Faculty, under the Faculty Course Center, Go
Directly to and choose Class List from the Select Area Drop Down arrow.

25 | P a g e

6. Outcome of that discussion
7. Short statement concerning the rest of the class’s appropriate behaviors and its reaction to the

disruptive behavior. (The last item is necessary to prove that your focus on the student with
disruptive behaviors is not discriminatory but that you assess all students’ behaviors.)

These notes need not be detailed initially, but you may need them later as a basis to provide a
more detailed accounting of what transpired. Students have the right to appeal according to the
procedures set forth in the Student Handbook, and your notes will probably become a factor in the
appeal process.

In your note, do NOT use words such as seem, appear, believe, feel, or might. Do not try to
describe your feelings, diagnose the behaviors, or recommend counseling or treatment of any kind.
Stick with descriptions of behaviors and conversations as they relate to appropriate classroom
etiquette.

Academic Integrity

Students shall practice academic integrity and are expected to do their own work. Students who
intentionally or unintentionally:

 Represent someone else’s work or ideas as their own without citation (plagiarism)
 Utilize inappropriate or prohibited aids for an examination or graded assignment including but

not limited to others answers, notes, phone or other electronic devices, test files, etc.
 Obtain inappropriate or prohibited materials before an examination or graded assignment

including but not limited to test questions, test answers, instructor files, etc. (cheating) are
subject to disciplinary action. The penalty for a first offense may include failure of the
assignment. A second offense may result in a conduct hearing with possible outcomes
including failure of the course, academic dismissal, and a mark on the student’s academic
record.

Portal Link: Academic Integrity Form (Links to an external site.)
Portal Link: Student Complaint Form (Links to an external site.)

Student Appeals

Students may use the "student appeal form" for select college decisions including: financial aid,
suspension, late drop, late withdrawal, the ability to enroll in more than 18 credits/term, the
opportunity to pursue a second degree, or to waive transcripts (see form for description of each
category). The student appeal (Links to an external site.) form, including instructions on how to
complete it, are available on-line via the KCC web site at www.klamathcc.edu (Links to an
external site.) or in person at the front desk of Building 3.

Once a student’s financial account is in good standing, student appeals are considered by a
College student appeals committee made up of qualified personnel from several Enrollment
Services departments across campus. Student appeals are processed at regular intervals throughout
the year and students are contacted with appeal decisions promptly.

Final Exams and Exam Schedule

Determine your exam schedule early and put exam dates and times on your syllabus. Final
exams are schedule in two hour blocks. You do not have to return finals.

If students claim that conflicts might prevent them from taking your final at its scheduled time,
ask for documented evidence or clearly make alternative arrangements with the student.
You may encounter students who need to take exams with accommodations (e.g., Time and a
half on tests). You should have received paperwork from students seeking accommodations early
in the term.
