Artistic Director’s Note
March 9–25, 2012 Women’s fashion, on the other hand, is much more
LCT’s 48th season – 322nd production complex. The rules of fashion are legion enough
to warrant their own encyclopedia. And if you’ve
never worn women’s clothing, getting dressed is
an adventure all its own. So many different articles
and virtually none of them designed for comfort.
When you add these two elements together, you
get the visual equivalent of a great comedy team.
It’s basic math, really: Man+Dress=Funny. And
if you extend that equation further and add a
monkey in a bellhop suit holding a banana cream
pie, then call it a night, ‘cause that’s about as funny
as it’s ever going to get. Enjoy the show!
Men in Dresses: The Essence of Comedy Greg Parmeter, Artistic Director
In comedy, there are certain things that are
always funny: getting hit in the face (with pies,
doors—it doesn’t matter), monkeys in uniforms
and men in drag. Especially men in drag. Frankly,
when I see a man dressed as Marilyn Monroe, I
struggle not to laugh too hard for fear that I may
wet myself.
What is it about a man in a dress that makes such a
great sight gag? Women in pants is so unfunny that
it has become the norm. But we don’t see too many
men show up to work in a dress and closed-toe
pumps; no one would take him seriously. (This is
too bad because I’ve got the best legs for a skirt
and heels.) The answer lies in the immutable truth
that men are funny looking and women’s clothing is
more complicated than we’re prepared to deal with.
We men are a simple people. We know that we’re
funny looking and that there’s not much we can do
about it outside of exercise and a healthy lifestyle.
As such, our attire remains as basic as possible.
Here’s me in the morning: “Pants? Check. Shirt?
Check. Shoes? Good to go.”
