FEATURING LCCT’S FIRST THREE PRODUCTIONS!
The Matchmaker, BUS STOP, The Fantasticks
The Matchmaker, La Crosse Community Theatre’s first production, directed by
William Dixon, opened on May 9, 1963, to much fanfare at Longfellow Junior High
School’s auditorium—the culmination of the dream by a group of dedicated and hard-
working people. Rehearsals, held in the undercroft of Christ Episcopal Church, shared
the space with set construction. Because the set, which included four scene changes,
would be transported to the rented performance venue, it had to be designed and built
in small sections, which would be assembled simul-
taneously with lights being
hung, costumes being intro-
duced and the actors seeing the
stage for the first time 7 days
before opening night.
Over 80 people auditioned for
16 roles in The Matchmaker,
which the La Crosse Tribune
called “too good to miss.”
Left: Program designed by Don Thomp-
son, who also appeared in numerous
productions.
Right: Sue Brailey’s design with fabric
swatch for Ermengarde’s costume (see
dress in photo above).

Miner built set pieces in church base-
ment to be assembled on Longfellow’s
stage during tech week.

Recollection from Ken Albers, director of
The Night of the Iguana, on special effects:
“I had never created rain onstage before, but Keith
Shaw and I drilled small holes in three long gutters
hung out of sight above the stage. We ran a garden
hose from the water heater behind the stage and spliced it to all
three gutters. Plastic sheeting was laid under the floor of the set and
over the first two rows of seats. Thunder and rain was recorded and
lightning designed to flash. For one performance, I stepped in for
Ricky Davis, who ran the sound, and forgot to turn it on. So, the
storm that night was the ‘silent storm’…but it sure looked great!”
The Fantasticks delighted the theatre’s third audience in 1964 with memorable
music and nostalgic moments at the Longfellow Junior High School auditorium.
The 2001 production of The Fantasticks was
1964
presented at the Yakumo International Theatre
Festival in Japan. LCT was the only American theatre
invited to participate.

The Young People’s Company at LCCT (left),
established in 1970, comprised 125 young people
doing nearly all the work for the two summer
productions, both onstage and backstage. The
shows, scheduled on alternating weekends, were
The Fantasticks and “A Thurber Carnival.”
Memories from Bob Seaquist: “Prior to having a theater, I helped move sets
and costumes from the scene shop (located over Quinn’s Sport Shop on Main
Street) back and forth to the venue being used for the show. We often borrowed
Dr. Murphy’s horse van. Once, we were returning a load of costumes to Cameron
and Rachel Gundersen’s home in Ebner Coulee. Three-quarters of the way up
the narrow coulee road, cars were parked on both sides, leaving too little room for
the truck. Jim Gutzke headed to the nearest home, where a wedding was in pro-
gress. In fact, the wedding was at the point of ‘if anyone present objects…’ when
Gutzke rang the bell. The cars were quickly moved so our truck could get though.”
