Pam Lee and Joan Nee

“Friendship collaboration in painting”

Just as this play is about best friends, Joan Nee
and Pam Lee became best painting friends. They
stand side by side and paint on the same piece of
paper at the same time. This style of collaborative
painting necessitates a constant give and take of
ideas, techniques, emotions, praise and critique.
The finished paintings are a melding of both
personalities and styles. The paintings are a
testament to true cooperation and friendship.
Pam and Joan have been painting together for
eight years. Pam teaches watercolor classes at
Western Technical College and Hobby Lobby. Joan is an
occupational therapist and artist. Once a year they teach
a weekend watercolor retreat together.

In 1966, nearly 400 energetic volunteers
breathed life into Oliver!, the theatre’s 16th

Coleman Auditorium.

LCT’s 194th production opened in the
newly redecorated theatre on Fifth Avenue.
Phase One of the project included new

LCT’s first Shakespeare production, staged
at Aquinas High School. Truman Hayes of the

especially for the 24th production.

James Gutzke, Colleen Kavanaugh

Director Michael Thompson cast several
veteran actors in this classic tragedy, including
James Gutzke (Othello), Colleen Kavanaugh
(Desdemona), Bill Nelson (Brabantio) and Laurie
Becker (Roderigo). In addition to directing,
Thompson played Iago in his final production

In May 1968, La Crosse Community
Theatre took out a permit for a $92,223
remodeling project at the former Cavalier
Restaurant on Fifth Avenue. Site acquisition
and construction estimates of $188,000 were
mostly covered by pledges. The “new” theatre
opened for the 1968-1969 (sixth) season.

Besides the obvious allure of Don Quixote’s romantic saga and its
memorable score, both La Crosse Community Theatre productions of
Man of La Mancha boasted their own dramatic stories and heroes.

In 1972, Arnold Johnson assembled a gifted cast that opened a 14-
performance run to rave reviews—“a unique emotional experience.” After
opening night, Ernie George (Sancho) was sidelined by laryngitis. With five
and a half hours to learn lines and blocking, Bill Nelson (The Barber)
stepped in to play Sancho. LCT veteran Don Thompson, visiting from
California, jumped in as The Barber, and the cast rallied to fill in any gaps.
Whew!

To kick off the 30th season in 1993, Morrie Enders cast Ramon
Gonzalez-Cuevas, returning to La Crosse from Florida, to dazzle audiences
with his passionate portrayal of the Man of La Mancha.
