Titled by artist Where yesterday lies sleeping under old rugs.
Where every spring, the dead are still praying
Their white prayers of apple blossoms
From the orchards of memory . . . . .
And autumn gardens are like unto the lap of God . . . .
Full of the seasons goodness.
Where birds write poems in the sky . . . .
And sing time obliterate.
Birds . . . . . because they are in the south
Have never flown away . . . . .
With the memory of my old house.

The big glad rains of April come
and thunder rumbles in the top of houses.
In the tossed and tumbled gardens
God is green and beautiful.
The abstract April weather is wet and warm
The birds are mad with joy.
The Apple trees are drinking up the joy of April rains.
The world is wild and green and overcome.
The henhouse yellow chicks are warm
while the barn rocks in the winds of heaven.
Boys of happiness come through the yards
with April in their eyes
And in the story of the sun the children find
the nine houses of happiness
where the thunder rumbles through the rafters of morning
Spring spreads its garden of joy
while the sun spills yellow canaries
upon the world and the new color of the world
is wild with April green!

Tennessee
To define it - is to weep -
Is to be still - and receive his
divine kiss - How Vast!!
like music - in a wood -
music like honeysuckle -
music like his face -
his voice - all is recorded
from one mind unto another - vicissitude
What prelude - !! Oh - save the secret - I can’t bare
I am exalted -
Knowing - that after the grief -
After the cup of tears -
there is heaven -
from all four corners of the earth from the houses of love -
there is utter heaven
God has no other plan -
Than heaven!!

When the poet walks, he walks in

It’s against the rules for anyone
to sing like a mocking bird,
kill him because he worships beauty

Notes on References
For the biographical sketch, three primary collections of Faulkner materials were consulted.
UT Archives. The set of materials "Henry Faulkner Papers" including Faulkner poems,
correspondence, and documents, as well as interviews and press clippings, was collected by Charles
House and donated to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Special Collections.
Settle Papers. This private collection of Henry Faulkner papers dating from 1964-1974,
including legal and personal papers, gallery transactions, and memorabilia, was compiled by
Greene Settle, Faulkner’s close friend and longtime adviser and art agent, and included along with
the artwork in the Greene A. Settle Jr. Faulkner Collection.
Faulkner-Morgan Pagan Babies Archive. The Faulkner-Morgan Pagan Babies Archive,
including Faulkner art, photographs, and writings among its collection of items and interviews
related to LGBTQ life in Kentucky, was mainly collected by Robert Morgan, with new materials
being added by Morgan and Dr. Jonathan Coleman.
Two key books provided information about Faulkner’s life and career.
House. Much of the chronology of Henry Faulkner’s life presented here follows the account
given in The Outrageous Life of Henry Faulkner : Portrait of an Appalachian Artist by Charles House.
Many details of key events included here either correlate with House’s descriptions, or are drawn
directly from House’s research.
Phelps. Additional details about Faulkner’s visits to Taormina, Sicily, are taken from A House
in Sicily, the memoir of Daphne Phelps, proprietress of the villa where Faulkner spent long stays.
Her visit to Lexington, Kentucky, is also recorded there.
Many artwork titles, and in particular those described as cataloged, refer to those recorded in the
catalog of the Greene A. Settle Jr. Faulkner Collection.
Poems included here are taken from "Henry Faulkner Papers" (UT Archives) unless otherwise
indicated in the index. Misspellings in retyped poems, as well as some artwork titles, have been
edited, though some idiosyncrasies of Faulkner's style have been preserved.
The primary personal recollections about Faulkner’s life were collected for this book from Clifton
Anderson, Ann Bevins, Marie Cosindas, John S. Hockensmith, Pattie Hood, Robert Morgan, Dr.
Maury Offutt, Paul Olsen, Jr., and Howard Settle.

“To all those who love / and those who weep / and to the lost who / seek a poet’s wings” Faulkner 1949
Faulkner’s writings were seldom published and his original texts are scattered and have never been systematically curated. Many of his
poems were spontaneous recitations at art openings. So the available texts do not provide a comprehensive account of his talents as a
writer and a poet. The poems and journal entries included here are offered to help the reader gain a sense of Faulkner’s personality and
perspective on life. The artist followed his muse, where both his poetry and his painting were his art, truly seeking a “poet’s wings.”
