What is Flax?

Flax is a blue or white-flowered plant that matures into bolls
containing ten seeds each and grows to 4 feet in height. The
whole seed, milled (ground), or oil forms are all consumable.
Flax thrives in the cool, northern climate of the western
Canadian prairies and the northern United States.
One of the oldest crops in the world; flax has been known to
be cultivated in ancient Egypt and China. Traditionally the
seeds were used in healing and the fibers for producing linen
and rope.
Flax contains many nutritional and beneficial components
including Omega-3 fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), fiber,
lignans, and high-quality protein. Which have been found to
help protect against heart disease, inflammatory disorders,
and certain cancers!

Benefits of Flax

Fiber: Flaxseed is high in fiber! Just 2 tablespoons of ground
whole flaxseeds contain 4 grams of fiber! Both soluble
(cholesterol lowering) and insoluble (happy digestive system)
fibers are components of Flax, which promote regularity and
healthy digestion

Lignans: Lignans are high in antioxidants and help maintain
breast and prostate health. The lignans in flaxseed are
estrogen-like chemical compounds with antioxidant qualities
that can scavenge free radicals in the body. Most plant foods
have some lignans, but flaxseed has at least 75 times more
compared to the others.

Alpha-Linolenic Acid (OMEGA 3’s): These are the essential
fats our bodies that are present in every healthy cell in the
body and are critical for the normal growth and functioning of
the cells, muscles, nerves, and organs. Our diets need to
include healthy sources of Omega 3's, because of our bodies
are not able to produce any. Research suggests that higher
intake of omega-3 fats help with reductions in cardiovascular
disease.
