Dear Mustang Community,

Welcome back to another Left to Right: Cory Cox, Asst. Principal of Activities; Lisa Stolper, Asst. Principal of Curriculum &
exciting and full year of Instruction; Kelli Kurle, Associate Principal of Athletics; Tyson Ostroski, Principal
Mustang athletics and activities!
Given the unconventional nature
of this school year, maintaining
support and encouragement to
our programs will be more im-
portant than ever. One of our big-
gest goals as a school is to en-
gage students in extra-curricular
programs and help them under-
stand the importance of being
part of a community. Dedication
to this goal, coupled with the hard
work of our students, staff, and
parents, has produced the excel-
lent tradition of success shared
among all of our programs. While
championships and titles are great
validation of hard work, we value
the relationships and connections
made between our outstanding
young men and women repre-
senting our school. The wealth of
talent and diversity in our school
makes this such a special place,
and we are eager to share this
with the world. It is what makes
us a Mustang Family!

It is our goal that Blue Valley North is not only a home to our students, but that you as a parent also
involve yourself with the North Community. A great way to do this is to join our Parent Booster Club.
The Blue Valley North Family would like to THANK the BVN Parent Booster Club for its continued sup-
port financially, as well as in their volunteer efforts. We simply would not be the successful school
that we are without the support of our PBC. I strongly encourage you to patronize the businesses
that advertise in this Activity Program and ask you to please join the Parent Booster Club as it direct-
ly impacts our students on a daily basis. Your ongoing involvement and support are essential to the
overall success of our school.

I look forward to seeing you all at our Mustang activities and games this year, and it is my honor to
cheer on our outstanding students.

Mustang Proud!

Tyson Ostroski, Principal
Blue Valley North High School

BOOSTER CLUB
President

“The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present. The oc-
casion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our
case is new, so must we think anew and act anew.”
—Abraham Lincoln, 1862

Dear BVN Community,

There’s no denying that we are living in a dramatic time of history that will be
studied and evaluated for decades if not centuries. It has been disruptive, and it has been costly. But, as a
“glass is half full” thinker, I tend to embrace times like this as opportunities to reexamine priorities, purposes and
ways of thinking, and watch for those glimmers of goodness, light, innovation and clarity that emerge.

One of the reasons that I love this quote from President Lincoln is that it calls upon us to think and act in new
ways and using new priorities and strategies. And, I’m proud to report that within days of the pandemic’s
surge, the PBC began thinking anew and acting anew. Here are a few examples:

 We raised and allocated over $3,500 to fund essential needs to help BVN families impacted by furloughs,
layoffs and lost business.

 We collaborated with our local businesses to sponsor and promote Mustang nights at places like Johnny’s
on 119th and Glenwood.

 We helped fund yard signs for the senior class of 2020 to congratulate them on their success after their
fourth quarter celebrations were cut short.

 We welcomed teachers back to the building with boxed lunches on August 18th. They were so surprised
and thankful for the act of gratitude.

 We fully funded yard signs to welcome our incoming Freshman class of 2024 to BVN.

But, here’s the thing. That kind of response is no surprise to anyone in our community because that is what the
PBC is known for and that is what we do. Since 2014, we have granted over $450,000 to support the programs
and activities that students love and that give so much back in terms of life lessons, experiences and friend-
ships fostered through participation and leadership.

Our Ask of You:

Please join us! Current circumstances make it difficult to volunteer real-time and in-person. Health and privacy
considerations restrict what we can/cannot do. So, for now, that leaves two primary areas for requests:

 Membership/Donations: I hate asking for money. But at the moment, the PBC needs contributions in order
to help our community. Membership is the easiest and best way to participate. We have five levels that
include added benefits. Please visit www.bvnmustangs.com, purchase your membership, add/update
your information and buy some spirit wear. Also, Upgrade your white level by emailing us at BVNPBCPresi-
[email protected] and we will provide a promo code to apply your current membership donation to a
higher level.

 Volunteer: We are a committed and fun group of parents who are committed to BVN and our students.
We are looking for more creative, committed and energetic minds to join us. We have several positions
available and multiple needs. Please sign up to volunteer at www.bvnmustangs.com or email your interest
to [email protected].

Moving forward, I challenge us all to be compassionate, creative and “out of the box” thinkers as we react to
current circumstances. Let’s find new ways to support one another and build community. Let us all, as Presi-
dent Lincoln said, “rise with the occasion.”

Thank you for supporting the PBC. Please reach out anytime with questions, comments and offers to help:

[email protected]. —Elizabeth Souder, 2020-21 PBC President

learn from the sport of basketball and I believe they can use those

SEASON OUTLOOK: After getting our season shut down as we advanced to the state semi-finals last
year, we are looking for some “unfinished business” this year. We return 4 players with starting expe-

a lot of depth and versatility, and they play in a very unselfish manner. They are a fun group to
coach and I look forward to our journey together this season.

BOYS’ SWIM & DIVE

Coach: Rob Cole

Coach Cole starts his 39th year of coaching and still
loves the thrill of it. He has coached at every level.
Over the years Coach Cole has coached many high
school All-State, All-American, and club national
swimmers. His philosophy is, “From novice to elite, I
have a place for everyone.” Coach Cole has a high
school record of 423 -78. His teams have won ten
straight league titles, and the last thirteen out of fif-
teen. He also has been in the top five at state 14
years, with 17 league and six state titles.

This is Cole's fourth year at BV North. He is very excit-
ed to lead the Mustang Swim and Dive Program. He
teaches Physical Education at Our Lady of Hope in
KCMO. He is joined by assistant coach Abigale El-
yacharshuster and Amy Hanna.

Abigale Elyacharshuster started swimming at the
age of three, was on her first swim team at the age
of eight, and has also coached and taught swim-
ming since 2005. During Abigale's freshman year of
high school in Evanston, Illinois she made the swim team as well as the junior varsity and varsity water
polo teams. Before the start of her Sophomore year, she moved with her family to the Kansas City
area where she swam during the summers with the Kansas City Blazers and the Jets. Abigale then
went to Emporia State University and graduated with a bachelor's of integrated studies in 2009. Abi-
gale's swim coach experience includes assistant coaching with The Jets, Turner and with pre-
compete teams.

Amy Hanna grew up a competitive swimmer with the Kansas City Blazers, Shawnee Mission North-
west and Milburn Country Club. She went on to coach at Carriage Country Club and Indian Hills
Country Club for over 9 years. Most recently she started the girls high school swim programs at both
Mill Valley and DeSoto High School, before staying home for a year with her kids. She now enjoys
teaching Health and Nutrition Wellness. When she is not teaching, or coaching Amy enjoys raising
her three young kids. She is excited to get back to coaching high school swimming!

Shelly King will be in charge of Mustang Diving. Coach King has been teaching for 45 years and
coaching diving for over 50 years. She is currently teaching elementary PE in Shawnee Mission.

The coaching staff wants everyone to have fun, learn from new experiences and improve through-
out the season. We will strive to teach life skills through positive leadership by creating a program
that fosters character and integrity. As we “Stampede our Way to New Traditions,” our focus will be
on developing personal character for each individual on the team, competing at the highest level
and representing Blue Valley North with pride!

“I feel every swimmer and diver is on a collision course with greatness. They have to determine when
that greatness will happen.” Mustang Proud!
