SSF1033 Introduction to Malaysian Social History
Group Assignment (30%)
1. Identify current available types of historical artifacts in any one of Sarawak’s
local museums. Then, explain how they create meaning to a community’s
history.
2. Visit one local site (i.e a Malay kampong, a graveyard etc.). Then, extract
at least THREE historical narratives (i.e from interviews from the locals, from
reading the signboard etc.) about how and when the site came into being.
3. Visit a local library and search for five Sarawak Gazette articles that
reported anything at all about events happening in British Malaya circa
1874 – 1919 CE. Summarize their contents and discuss how British Malaya
was depicted in the articles.
4. Describe the evolution of any one national examination (i.e Sijil Pelajaran
Malaysia) from its introduction until now. Then, explain how did the
evolution reflect education values of Malaysian citizens today.
5. Interview a local who works in a local press (as an editor, reporter etc.). Ask
his/her from his/her experience about how the publications they are
working with has impacted any social issues concerning any of Malaysia’s
ethnic community. Report and summarize his/her answer.
6. Identify a colonial tradition that still persists in Malaysian’s social practice
today. Then explain how such tradition may have been, over the years,
localized.
7. Malaysian Agreement 1964 (MA63) is an important document which lead
to the formation of Malaysia. Discuss the evolution of MA63 and what are
the implications of MA63 to the Borneo States of Sabah and Sarawak.
