Mary Ann has always exemplified
the dedicated and openhearted aca-
demic and professional I aspire to be.
Her passion for language education
seemed to know no bounds, and she
is probably the best heart-to-heart
conversation partner I've ever had!
Congratulations on your retirement
Mary Ann! Much love!

I met Mary Ann as we looked at ex-
panding our Hebrew language programs in
San Diego and at the possibility of opening
a Hebrew Language Charter School. In
both cases, Mary Ann was a very helpful
resource providing an open door for guid-
ance on issues such as identifying facilities
to house the programs, training and profes-
sional development for educators. Mary
Ann provided encouragement and it was
greatly appreciated.

I had the great pleasure of serving as a
TA for Mary Ann while completing my
Masters in French at SDSU. I learned so
much from Mary Ann not just about the
French language, history and culture, but
also about language technology, presenta-
tion skills, and LIFE itself. Her love of
people and abundant passion are apparent
in everything she does. I will always be
grateful for the opportunity to work at her
side. Thank you!!

My meeting with Dr. Lyman-Hager was brief
--I had sought her advice and help in attaining
information about Korean dual language pro-
grams during the spring 2017 semester--but her
hospitality and welcoming demeanor during that
brief encounter was very impressive and I felt
happy to have met someone who would be able
to provide helpful advice regarding dual lan-
guage programs in Southern California. I am
glad to have had a conversation with her before
her retirement. Thank you Dr. Lyman-Hager.

Mary Ann didn't wait to be the director of
LARC to open herself to the foreign cultures and
languages. I would rather say this is the opposite : she oc-
cupied this position precisely because she had the true
qualities to defend and promote the diversity of the cul-
tures and their respective idioms. The best illustration of
this is that she completely opened herself to the French
culture and, consequently, acquired a profound under-
standing of it through the many years she dedicated her-
self to it. I was - and still am - impressed by the extent of
her knowledge about French history, literature and even
anecdotal facts dating back to the earliest times. Fortu-
nately, even after she is retired from LARC, she will con-
tinue her studies in this domain and will then keep con-
tributing to the field.
Dr. François Vanleene,
I very much regret the fact that I am not able to join
you, your family and colleagues at your retirement recep-
tion and celebrate your multiple contributions to the profes-
sion. I wish to extend my warmest best wishes to you as you
bring this chapter of your life to a close and begin new adven-
tures with your love ones.
Your legacy to the profession will live on through the many
leaders that you have empowered and certainly by the multi-
ple academic contributions that you have made to the field of
world language education. Your distinguished professional
career has been an inspiration to all of us who have witnessed
your impact locally, nationally and internationally. May the
next phase of your life be as fruitful and bring you as many
blessings as you have blessed the entire world language teach-
ing profession with your academic intellect, commitment and
dedication to strengthen the teaching and learning of world
languages and cultures. With deep admiration and warmest
congratulations, Duarte M. Silva

stead in attaining success in my life.

me. I truly miss you!
