Letter from the Mayor of Deer Park
Greetings and welcome to the City of Deer Park, affectionately known as the Birthplace of Texas. We are so excited that PONY has chosen our city as the location of its very first International Girls
Softball Series.
As a community, we show support for all of our young athletes, be they baseball or softball players, 6U or 18U, college-bound on athletic scholarships, or simply playing for the experience. We are proud of the dedication our
kids and their families demonstrate in their athletic endeavors, and with this series held here, that pride now extends to players from all over the world.
It is fitting that we would welcome international players and their families, as Deer Park is home to history at the local, state, national and international level. In 1836, the Battle of San Jacinto – fought just minutes from Deer Park – was won by Gen- eral Sam Houston, securing Texas’ independence from Mexico. The treaty papers between the two nations were drafted on Deer Park soil, hence our recognition as the “Birthplace of Texas.”
While you’re here, I would strongly encourage you to experience all of the history our community has to offer. Visit the San Jacinto Monument, which includes the San Jacinto Museum of History and a limited exhibit on the oil and gas industry entitled “BIG ENERGY: A Texas Tale of People Powering Progress.” See the Bat- tleship TEXAS, which played a role in both World Wars. Stop into City facilities including the Community Center (610 E. San Augustine), the Municipal Court and Theater Building (1302 Center Street) and the Deer Park Public Library (3009 Center Street) to see pieces of our community’s history in cabinets that are free to access during business hours.
Don’t forget to explore our business community, as well! Whether you’re looking for a bite to eat between games, a spa where you can relax and get some well-de- served pampering, or unique shopping venues to pick up souvenirs, Deer Park has lots of hidden treasures you won’t want to miss.

On behalf of the Deer Park PONY community, it is a true honor to host the inaugural PONY International Girls Softball World Series in Deer Park.
In the spirit of PONY Baseball’s World Series, this Girls Softball World Series will create an opportunity for young athletes to showcase their incredible skills in front of their families, their fellow competitors and the Houston area. These tournaments create an opportunity for sportsmanship on an international scale, and as an organization, we are thrilled to start this tradition for our softball players. What an opportunity to watch and interact as the world comes to Deer Park’s doorstep!
We are also very grateful for the opportunity to host this event at our newly- completed Girls Softball Complex, which was supported by our residents as part of a set of seven Parks and Recreation projects. As a resident and as a City Council member, it is truly wonderful to have the support of our community for softball, baseball and all of the other athletic opportunities that shape the lives of our youth.

Welcome to Deer Park;
You are taking part in a historic moment in the history of PONY Girls Softball. It is the inaugural year of the PONY International Softball World Series, an event that has come to fruition, after many years of anticipation. Previously, the pinnacle of PONY Girls Softball was reached at the Zone level with international participants playing in these events, held in the United States, that were closest in proximity to their home country. This past October at the PONY International Board of Directors Meeting, PONY’s Girls Softball Committee proposed the idea of determining a true world champion through a tournament format, similarly to PONY’s Baseball World Series events. With full Board support and a formed partnership with Deer Park PONY and the City of Deer Park, this dream has become a reality.
We welcome all of the players, coaches, families, friends, alumni and fans to Deer Park, a city rich in history, culture and southern hospitality. The players and coaches have worked hard to prepare for the PONY International Softball World Series and you will bear witness to their efforts over the next few days. While you’re here, enjoy all that the city has to offer, in addition to Deer Park’s new, state-of-the art softball facilities.
PONY was founded in Washington, Pennsylvania in 1951 with six original teams of 13 and 14 year-old baseball players. While girls have always been accepted to play on PONY Baseball teams, PONY has recognized that girls would like to have a league of their own. Since the 1970s, PONY Girls Softball has spread across the United States and all over the world. Today, over 500,000 boys and girls participate each spring and summer from ages 3-23 in baseball and in fast and slow pitch girls’ softball throughout the U.S. and in more than 60 other countries. We welcome our international field of teams, consisting of squads from Mexico, Puerto Rico and Russia. Please make them feel welcome, and it is our hope that you all will form relationships that will last a lifetime through this experience. Friendships are just as important as winning.
I want to take a moment to personally thank Deer Park PONY and the City of Deer Park, the sponsoring organizations, for their dedication and commitment to the success of the first-ever PONY International Softball World Series. A group of dedicated volunteers spend a great deal of time insuring that your visit to the PONY International Softball World Series is a memorable one.

Welcome, sit back and relax as the first edition of the PONY International Softball World Series unfolds on the field. Only two teams will eventually play in the championship games, but each player on each team is already a champion. Good luck and we hope to see you next year.
