Regular Exercise

Summer means many children will be playing
outdoors; all children and young people need to do
at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day.
Being active is linked to better general health,
stronger bones, muscles and increasing levels of
self-esteem.

Endurance activities can be lots of fun, and they do
not have to be competitive!

Just a few examples are: scootering, tug of war,
swimming, skating, dancing, tennis, walking,
jogging, cycling, dodgeball, hockey, football and
basketball.

Examples of what counts as one portion include,
two or more small fruits (e.g. plums, satsumas), one
piece of a medium fruit (e.g. banana, apple) and one
heaped tablespoon of dried fruit.

Water and milk are the best drinks for children as
they do not contain sugars. Drinks with a lot of
sugar have been associated with weight gain in
children. Milk and fruit juice also provide important
vitamins and minerals.
