Heirloom seeds for the Future 1 [email protected]

The Roots of SEEDWORTHY

Ed and I pooled our garden work in 2013, when we decided to join our local farmer’s market
in far western Hayesville, NC. We’d both been gardening for over 40 years….. mini-gardens, bucket
gardens, small plots tended in the most challenging situations, meaning root bound acreage, lack of
sunshine, etc.. Ed grew veggies and fruits for over 12 years on the asphalt in front of his apartment.
Still, he harvested thousands of heirloom seeds from that chary landscape.

Regarding the origin of SEEDWORTHY, I discovered that Ed had been buying, growing,
keeping and sharing open-pollinated seeds for over 40 years. This, I surmised, had indeed become
a thriving, bountiful avocation. My garden partner had become, by his own perennial dedication,
one of those special people in any community…..a steward of seed saving.

Inspired and instructed by his experience, I promptly took up the art and craft of seed-saving.
That first fall of 2013, I garnered seed from a handful of vegetables, some tomatoes and squash,
then by 2014, I had gathered and dried and laid up the fine young seeds of a cornucopia of open-
pollinated veggies. I felt like Midas turned gardener, enriched by edible treasure.

Steadily, as Ed and I marketed our garden wares, more and more people shared their
interest in heirloom seeds and growing organic plants in their gardens. Here was a leading green
wave of renewed awareness coming our way. Our seeds were selling, more and more each
growing season. So, building on our “seedworthy” conversations at the farmers markets of
Hayesville and Murphy, we both felt it was time to present an heirloom seed catalog to share with
the Community.

We’re new. We’re small. We’re excited to help more people commit to and enjoy the
perennial benefits of keeping good green gardens replete with the healthy harvest of open-pollinated
seeds grown organically.
