The Churchwardens of St. Mary’s
are delighted to announce that,
subject to completion of
formalities, the Revd Graham
Bowkett, currently Rector of the
Upper Itchen Benefice in
Winchester Diocese, has been
appointed to be the next Vicar of
St Mary’s.

Details regarding the date and time of Graham’s licensing as Vicar will be
published in the next edition of Outlook and online. Meanwhile, St Mary’s
continues to function as normal with the help and support of many people,
not least the retired and visiting clergy who have been leading and
preaching at our services and to whom we are much indebted.

Help end world poverty

Every year, the community of Charlton Kings
raises around £8,000 during Christian Aid week
to help bring an end to world poverty. Here’s a
true story showing how that money helps...

How well do you know your numbers?

340 is...

A) a London bus route?
B) the area code of the Virgin islands?
C) the daily cost of running St. Mary’s church in pounds?
D) a four-engine air-craft?

41 is...

A) the atomic number of Niobium?
B) A spiral galaxy in the constellation of Pegasus?
C) Each day’s deficit at St. Mary’s church in pounds?
D) Roger Bannister’s race number when breaking the 4 minute mile?

Over the last five years St. Mary’s has spent £40,000 of savings
making good the shortfall between running the church and
donations received.

Could you help us reduce the deficit?

Could you help us reduce our deficit by increasing your regular giving to St
Mary’s, or perhaps by joining a planned giving scheme and starting to make
regular contributions? Contact our Treasurer (details below) to find out more
about opportunities for giving to St Mary’s.

Could you be our volunteer fundraiser?

We are also seeking a volunteer to co-ordinate/manage/lead this year’s
fundraising activities as part of our commitment to permanently reduce the
deficit through a combination of increased giving and reduced costs.

Are you that person? Or do you know someone who might be willing to take
on the task? If so, please contact Martin, our Treasurer, on 01242 260575.

A season of festivals

By the time you read this Easter will be upon us – or even already past - and it
is easy to think that everything in the church goes quiet until the build up to

Christmas begins. But that is far from being the case.

“Jesus was After the trauma of following Jesus through Holy Week

the Risen Christ on a number of occasions, being taught
before he by him and waiting for the coming of the Holy Spirit. In

Ascension Day is the day when Jesus, in physical form, parted from the disciples

and it is an important festival. This year it falls on Thursday 10th May (it is

always a Thursday, being 40 days after Easter Day) and at St Mary’s we keep

the festival with a celebration of Holy Communion at “Jesus didn’t leave

Jesus did not leave his disciples to sink or swim after his
Ascension, he promised them that he would send the

Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, to be with

them and to guide them. Ten days after the Ascension, the Holy Spirit came

upon the disciples giving them the confidence and power to take up and carry

on Jesus’ ministry in the world. That day we call the Feast of Pentecost (it used

to be known as Whit Sunday). Regarded as the birthday of the Church

Pentecost is a major festival ranking alongside Christmas and Easter. This year

we celebrate Pentecost on 20th May – see page 7 for details of our festival

services.
