Serving Up Table Tennis
by Kristen Doughtery

On Feb. 25, students and teachers battled it out in the Girls
Varsity Table Tennis Team’s first ever Table Tennis Tournament!
The elimination process, designed by both the girls on the
team and their coach Mr. Powell, allowed for only one winner of
the students and one winner of the teachers. After a rigorous two
hours, the club was proud to announce the first place winners were
Mr. Motschwiller and Harry Londoño. With many participants, the
tournament was both a competitive and entertaining experience for
the players and the spectators.
Not only did the tournament promote awareness and recruit
support for the team, but also the team provided enjoyment and
gratification to fellow students and staff. The tournament united
such a diverse array of students from all grades with a sport that is
very new to the school. The team was just approved this past year,
so we were able to participate in a very active season where we
were able to travel to other schools, and host games at our own in
order to move up in the division rankings. The Girls Table Tennis
Team thanks those who attended the tournament, and who continue
to support the team! This tournament graciously proved a perfect
end to the season, and an ideal beginning to a prolonged interest in
Maspeth High School’s world of Table Tennis.

Orchestrating a Conversation with Mr. DiMeglio

by Zabia Choudhury
Everyone knows Mr. DiMeglio as the sassy String Orchestra teacher of Maspeth High School. He's an eccentric man with a passionate
love for music, which is expressed through each and every concert he
holds for his students and himself. I had the privilege to sit down and get
to know who Mr. DiMeglio really is behind the curtains.

Q: You've been in Maspeth High School since the beginning. What
do you love about Maspeth High School?
A: There are a lot of things I like about this school. I think I love the op-
portunities that students are afforded here because I can't think of many
other school in New York, in the Queens area, that have nearly as many
things available to you guys – clubs, after school things, and trips. You
can be on four different sports teams and three different clubs; you can
play in the after school orchestra or go to Italy and Greece. You can do
so much at this school, which I think is fantastic and I think it's wonder-
ful that you guys are given these very rare opportunities.

Q: Deep inside your sarcastic exterior, you have a heart; students can come up to you for anything. How do you feel about your close
relationship with your students?
A: For me, unlike most teachers in this school, I have the same students for four years. It's different for me in terms of getting to know a
student because not only do I get to know somebody, but also I get to see them progress literally in their entire high school career, which is a
good thing and a bad thing. It's good because I can see them grow from this geeky, nerdy, and anxious teenager into an adult going out into
the world. And it's a bad thing because you get attached. As an arts teacher, it's something that you learn to accept. You let go after a while.

Q: You've grown close to the seniors that are leaving; you've left a mark on them. What sort of advice can you give to them before
they do become adults in the real world?
A: This is going to sound corny but stay true to who you are. Don't ever forget who you are or where you've come from because you don't
understand how important that is – to have your own identity out in the world. As soon as you leave high school, as soon as you're out in the
world, you meet a lot of people and you're always going to compare yourself to others; you're always going to end up saying 'is this person
smarter than me', 'is this person prettier than me', or 'does this person have more money than me' and that's only going to serve to hurt your-
selves. Don't compare yourselves to others. Understand that you are beautiful and unique. You need to love who you are.

Q: Onto your history with music, when did your little obsession with musical instruments start?
A: Well, when I was in fourth grade I started on the flute. I chose the flute without a second thought. And then when I went to middle school
in seventh grade, we had the opportunity to switch to string instruments, so I switched to violin and viola and it's been that way ever since.

Q: How many instruments do you know how to play?
A: I know how to play the string instruments, so the: violin, viola, cello, bass. I play the harp, piano, flute, and clarinet. I also know how to
play the trombone, so I know how to play about nine instruments. Bizarrely enough, I haven't learned how to play the guitar. I have one at
home, I have a 'Teach Yourself Guitar' book, and I've managed to start but I haven't technically learned yet. I don't want to know just chords; I
want to learn how to play the instrument like an actual instrument.

Q: So, when did you realize you wanted to teach String Orchestra?
A: I was in high school when I realized I wanted to teach String Orchestra because my String Orchestra teacher basically saved my life in
more than one way; everything he did I thought was amazing.

Q: The pieces that are played for concerts are incredible. What's the method to your madness of picking each piece for concerts?
A: Oh lord, I'm very temperamental with my music selection. Take the Junior class for example, I was going to go in an entirely different
direction of what pieces I wanted them to play. I didn't have any plans to do a song from Mulan or The Hunger Games. But I heard the pieces
and I realized that these pieces are for them. I think, for me, once I have a piece of music I can tell who it's for because each class can make
their piece sound beautiful. I think it's more of a matter of what pieces belong to them; I know that in an instant. And it's also what I want
to hear, what I think you guys can do really well. The pieces you guys do in class, you do them fantastically because their your pieces; you
create them.

Q: You've obviously played multiple pieces of music in your life. What would you say is one piece of music that will always remain
your favorite?
A: Oh, that's hard. [60 seconds of silence] I'm trying to think of the piece that gave me the most emotional, visceral reaction. I would say
Mahler Symphony One I did in college because I don't even know how to describe it. It's something that, as a musician, you feel it in the mo-
ment, you feel a certain way. You can't explain how you're feeling. Sometimes, I feel selfish because I'm having this moment that no one else
is experiencing but at the same time, the audience is experiencing it too.

Spontaneous Snow
by Samantha Galvez-Montiel

When one thinks back to this past winter, he/she

might mention the randomness of some of the storms we
received.
We didn’t think we’d get snow at all this winter,
but that was obviously not the case. We had a sponta-
neous blizzard that gifted us with over 30 inches of snow
that didn’t stop until midnight on Sunday, January 24.
The obvious assumption people would turn to would be,
global warming.
According to Bill Korbel from News 12, there’s
nothing unusual about this. Weather patterns often change
during winter. He also makes it clear that no single storm
can be attributed to long term climate change. There’s
is no certain weather to be cautious of because “weather
will always change and will continue to be a threat to
people. That’s why we have to use technology to learn
to cope with big storms and possible changing long term
climate conditions.”

Thus far, the movie has grossed nearly $521 million in the Unit-
