WVN March 2020

WVN March 2020

March 2020 : Volume 41 Issue 10 : This edition compiled by Chris Pennington

What’s Occurring around Whitley.

Well, first we had storm Ciara bringing down trees specifically at
the garages across from Town Green, unfortunately the tree
blocked Raddel Lane preventing traffic accessing the Village. To
the rescue came Sam Houghton with one of his Magnificent Ma-
chines!
Within minutes of being informed the tree was removed and the
road open. Thank You and well-done Sam.
The following Sunday, Storm Dennis blew in but wasn’t too bad,
with just a brisk wind blowing around Town Pit as Ashlee and
Christine from Rouge Farm arrived with Rose and Izzy from Lower
Whitley for their very first hack out around the pond and Back
Lane on their trusty ponies, Tags, Lance, Charlie and Diego. All
went well and we will see more of them in the future weeks I am
sure!

What you missed on February 1st 2020! (If you weren’t there!)

What a brilliant evening the Rock and Roll Bingo was. It is so enjoyable listening to the few seconds of hits from the 60’s onwards, bring-
ing back the memories, with a chance of winning a few prizes. Snacks were provided and ‘Headband’ provided the live music, playing

their entertaining set list of classic rock and pop music. The absolute high-
light of the evening was produced by Derek Whyte and his captivating
impersonation of Mick Jagger’s dance moves. Derek stated ‘I’ve got the
moves like Jagger!’

Sunday 3rd May 2020 Now in its 37th year, this established and well respected
10k road race takes place on Sunday May 3 through the
car free lanes of Whitley.

As usual the race and the shorter fun run (just under 5k)
start at 11.00am from the Village Hall and take in many
local roads.
Please note to ensure the safety of the runners, the
route will be formally closed to traffic from approx
10.00am and reopened around 12.30pm. Apologies if
this causes you an inconvenience and we would be
grateful if you could plan alternative travel arrange-
ments during this time. If you have any specific concerns
please let us know and we will look to accommodate
them.

wich Road

the maintenance and improvement of the Village Hall
facilities, the funds of which are a little light following
the refurbishment of the roof and hall.

If you are thinking about whether the race or fun run is for you, please look at our website. There are many quotes from previous run-
ners, the key feedback being a great event, well supported and suited to all abilities. Whether you are after a personal best or a run
around with the kids, we can promise you a good time.
Importantly this and all our events in the Village, take place because of the long list of fantastic local volunteers we have. Julie and
Pete Clayton are helping ensure we have enough volunteers and stewards for the race. If you are unable to run but would like to sup-
port us in some way, please let me know.
We also have a our main sponsors of Schmitz CargoBull; Lakeland Trucks; Blue Arrow Traffic Management plus a growing number of
local supporters including Ring O Bells Garage; Spire Cheshire Hospital and the Applegreen garage. If you would like to support the
event please let any one of the committee know.
Many thanks again for the great support, enthusiasm and at times patience, it is really appreciated and we look forward to seeing you
and your family and friends again on the 3rd May. Steve Moore (Chair Whitley Village Hall tel: 730012)

Whitley Womens’ Institute Press Report February 2020

Our February meeting was our birthday meeting. Whitley WI is now 82 years old and to mark
the occasion we had a wonderful cake made and decorated by one of our members Anne
O’Neil. The cake was cut by June Smithers.
As we arrived that evening we were all handed a small green paper heart on which to write a
way we could contribute to lessening the effect of Climate Change. These were then displayed
for us all to see.
The speaker for the evening was Sharon Dunne from the River Reeves Foundation who gave an
inspirational talk. Her family lost their son River Reeves, one of the band members in Viola

Beach, who all died in a car accident in Swe-
den together with their manager. They have
set up the foundation and are doing much,
by way of fundraising, to improve the oppor-
tunities for talented men and women who
might not otherwise have the money or sup-
port to follow their dreams. Since 2016 they
have each year organised a money raising
music festival in Warrington and have recent-
ly opened a shop in the Mall in Warrington
called Vintage Viola.
Each year our members can take part in a
draw to win our Denman Bursary of £300 to
be spent towards the cost of a course at the
WI Denman College in Oxfordshire. This year
the award went to Cathy Taylor.
We in Whitley WI are always looking for new
activities for our members to take part in. On
Mon 30th March from 10 – 12 we are having
a scrabble / dominos morning. We are also
hoping to do craft evening soon for those
who can’t attend the monthly afternoon craft
club.
On Wed 12th Feb we have 18 members going
to a Tapas lunch at Pesto and we have al-
ready started to organise our May outing to
Shrewsbury.
There is the Cheshire Literary Lunch on Thur.
23rd April with the author Jaqi Anderson as
the speaker. On Thursday 2nd April there is the PAL meeting at Frodsham Community Centre to
discuss our use of plastics and on 16th and 17th Sept we have afternoon tea extravaganzas at
Thornton Manor to celebrate Cheshire WI’s 100th birthday.
At our next month’s meeting we have Brian Cullen, a former DJ on Radio Caroline. giving us a
talk about his time on board the ship.
Our meetings are held at 7.30pm on the first Thursday of each month at Whitley Village Hall;
guests and new members are welcome. See www.whitleywi.org.uk for further information.
Finn Harding came and helped at the village
hall tidy up on February 8th as part of his
bronze Duke of Edinburgh award. Thank you
Finn from Whitley village hall committee. An
extra pair of hands is always useful!
