Editor’s letter

For years in my teens and early 20s I worked as a lifeguard, spending 10-hour days in the classic red one-piece
bathing suit baking under the sun. ankfully, I didn’t guard high-tra c pools; I mostly worked at apartment
complexes and there were long stretches of time where no one swam and I could sit in the shade and read.
When I nally let my certi cations lapse and got my rst “real” job at a newspaper, I felt a sense of relief that I never

had to deal with a serious drowning situation. For the cover this month, we met with Ali Sisca, owner and founder of Swim nity,

who teaches toddlers life-saving survival skills. It’s a thing of wonder to watch kids, some who can barely walk, jump into the

water and instantly ip on their back to breathe. Drowning is not the chaotic splashing around you see in the movies; it’s someone

silently slipping underwater unable to call out for help. To me, there’s no skill more important than learning to swim. ough there

might be a lot of tears at the start of a child’s swim lesson, think of all the years of enjoyment you’re giving them. e water is my

happy place, and with a little practice, it can be theirs too. Be well. Jodi

Making the Case for Beneficiary Reviews A
s
By Andrew J. Cavaliere, CLTC k

Designating a life insurance policy beneficiary can be an obvious choice for many people. It a
is usually the insured’s spouse, their children and/or other family members. It is a modifiable n
decision while the insured is alive, but it immediately becomes a permanent decision after
the insured passes away. Most people want to maintain control of their financial assets and E
decide who receives their life insurance benefits and that is why it is so important to review x
these designations in a timely manner. p
e
It is also important that the insured actually names a living person or persons to receive r
the benefit. For most people, not naming a beneficiary of your life insurance policy is an t
ill-advised decision, since without a named beneficiary their life insurance proceeds pour
directly into their estate and must be probated. As most of my readers know, not only is
there is cost to probating an estate, but there is also the matter of the individual’s assets
being made part of the public record. Hypothetically speaking, it is possible that some of
these assets could then be distributed to individuals not of the insured’s choosing.

Life insurance beneficiary designations supersede all language in a will and indeed bypass probate. They can even have
priority over a court-ordered judgment. Having said that, they should not be considered a substitute for a simple will but
should rather be organized to work in concert with the individual’s final wishes.

Moreover, what if the insured forgets to change their life insurance beneficiary designations after a divorce or after the
loss of a loved one due to premature death?

How important are contingent or secondary beneficiaries? Consider the following hypothetical examples:

1. John and Jane have one child together and then both buy life insurance. A few years later John gets divorced from
Jane but soon after remarries Debbie. John and Debbie then have two more children but John never updates his life
insurance beneficiaries. Then John dies and his two children from his second marriage are excluded from any of the
life insurance death benefits.

2. Bob is divorced and goes on a vacation where he is tragically killed in an accident. Bob had named his three
young children as his primary beneficiaries. Since they are all underage, and since Bob had no simple will, the children
will receive all of Bob’s assets and his life insurance proceeds when they turn 18. Without a proper will designating a
trust as the beneficiary, the state will choose a trustee and distribute all of Bob’s assets including the life insurance
proceeds to his children at 18 well before they are mature enough to manage the funds for themselves.

3. Melissa divorces her husband and raises her two children on her own. As a single mother, life gets in the way and
Melissa forgets to change the beneficiary designation on her life insurance policy. Melissa passes away after a long
illness and her estranged ex-husband receives all of the life insurance proceeds thus disinheriting her children.

4. It was a second marriage for both Jim and Mary. Jim has an adult son from his previous marriage while Mary has
two adult daughters from hers. They both recognize that it is important to have a plan to distribute their assets in case
of a disaster. In fact, they had named each other as primary beneficiaries on their life insurance policies, retirement
plans and bank accounts. In addition, they purchased their home as joint tenants. Unfortunately, they never got
around to creating simple wills or designating contingent beneficiaries, and then the unthinkable happened. Jim and
Mary were both involved in a head-on car collision. Mary was killed instantly and Jim survived for only 10 days. Since
Jim passed after Mary, the house, and all of their life insurance, qualified assets, and bank accounts are distributed
to Jim’s son. Mary’s daughters were left with nothing.

Is this how Jim and Mary would have wanted their life insurance and assets distributed? Probably not, but once a person
passes away, it is impossible to determine what their intentions really were without beneficiary designations and the
appropriate legal documents. These examples vividly remind us all about the importance of both naming primary and
contingent beneficiary designations. Unfortunately, many clients fail to keep these designations up to date and as we
have illustrated in this brief article, the results for their families can be devastating.

Conducting periodic beneficiary reviews with your advisor every few years is an excellent way to guarantee that the
people you care about are the same people who receive your assets in case of death.

SUMMER:

The Season of Joy
Chill out with these yoga poses

BY JAIME ROCHE

O ne June 21, we enter the warmest and most-anticipated time of the year: summer. Trips to
the beach or lake, BBQs and vacation getaways are just some of the activities many of us look
forward to engaging in during the summer months.
Yet as joyful as summer can be, packing all of our plans and activities into just three short months
can leave this lazy time of year, as it is often described, feeling instead like the most chaotic time
of year.

But don’t fret. As usual, Traditional Chinese Medicine is here to help us achieve balance and
harmony during this very high-energy season.

According to TCM, summer is considered one of the the most yang times of year. It is a season
ruled by the element fire and, similar to spring, it is a time for great growth and change, both in
nature and our own lives. When the fire element is balanced and in harmony, the heart is pumping
strong, the spirit is calm and joyful and sleep is sound and peaceful. When the fire element is
unbalanced or in disharmony, depression, agitation and insomnia may occur.

To maintain balance of our fire element during the season of summer,TCM recommends certain
foods to keep us cool and calm. Fresh vegetables that contain moisture such as cucumbers, lettuce,
spinach and watercress should be consumed regularly. Proteins should be light and include fish and
seafood. Ample water consumption is also recommended as the summer heat can be dehydrating.
Try adding cucumber and mint to your water for a great cooling summer drink.

Activities such as swimming, meditation and yoga are also recommended to keep our spirits at ease
during this high-energy time of year. On the next page is a gentle summer-oriented yin sequence that
targets both the heart and small intestine meridians. This practice will help you to relax the nervous
system, tune more deeply into your intuition and open your heart to the joys of this blissful season. Enjoy!

Lying Front Shoulder Opener

Start by sitting on your hip. From here, extend your right hand
behind you, begin to lie down on your right side, allowing

your right arm to come in line with your right shoulder. From
here, place the right side of your head on a block and sweep

your left forearm behind your back. Legs may be bent or
straight. Hold pose for 3 minutes, then repeat on the left.

Wide-Kneed Child Pose with Shoulder Opener

Spread your knees as wide as your mat, big toes
together to touch. Shift your hips back to your heels.

Extend your arms out in front of you and place a
bolster or folded blanket under your elbows and upper

arms. Allow your head to rest on the bolster while
allowing the hands to come together overhead. Release

your chest to the floor. Hold for 3 to 5 minutes.

Supported Bridge Heart Opener

Place two blocks on the upper portion of your mat. The lower block
should be midheight and lengthwise and the upper block should be
the tallest height. Lay back and allow the tips of your shoulder blades
to come to the edge of the lower block and the upper block to the
back of the head. Release your arms out into a “T,” letting your chest

open. Legs may be bent or straight. Hold for 3 to 5 minutes.

Caterpillar on Bolster

Sit on the edge of a bolster or folded blanket. Hingeing from
your hip crease, begin to release forward over your legs. You
may support the head with a block balanced on the shin or
between the calves. If your head cannot reach, then bend your
knees slightly. Allow head, neck and shoulders to release as

best they can. Hold for 3 to 5 minutes.

Wide-Kneed Child Pose Twist

Start back in wide knees child pose, hips extended back to heels.
Extend your right arm underneath your chest lying the right
side of your head on the mat or blanket. Allow the top left arm
to come behind your back. Rest for 3 minutes on each side.

Savasana

Finish your practice lying on your back in corpse pose: arms extended out by sides,
palms facing up, legs extended down the mat. Hold pose as long as you like.

Preventing Summer Learning Loss
How to keep young minds stimulated during the long break

BY SHARI SUSS

The days are longer, flowers are in full bloom and students everywhere are excited about the prospect of having fun in the sun throughout
their summer vacation. While it is important to have a break after a full year of academics, by September, many children will start the
new school year with achievement levels significantly lower than they were at the beginning of the summer. This trend is often referred to
as the “summer slide” or “summer learning loss.” For children who are already struggling to keep up, the academic loss can create additional
stress and apprehension at the start of the new year of school in the fall.

What can parents do over the summer to mitigate the effects of this downward trend?
