A Time to Refle

It is a time to reflect on what we have learned about the impact of the Coronavirus on how we live, how we have lived, and
possibly how we will proceed. Are we asking ourselves what we really need? Are we finding out what is most important to us?
Are we looking at what we buy and where it comes from? Can we do anything more to protect ourselves if this continues? Can
we continue to improve our health? Are we getting good information and acting on it?

How we respond to these questions will guide our return to normalcy and how our future generations are prepared for
unforeseen circumstances like this. We are living a part of history that no one is prepared for, but teaches us a lesson to be more
prepared and more mindful of what really matters.

What do we really need? We need safe, secure and viable sources of food and medicine. Some of this has been outsourced out
of our country and risks our access to the supply. We need to bring this back. We need self-sufficient supply and utilization of
American resources.

What is important? Just like our food, our health and well-being needs to be safe and secure. More research is finding that
healthy immune systems are important basics of holding this virus at bay. Healthy habits of hand washing and vigilant attention
to your surroundings and what you touch is also helpful in reducing the spread. Ridding ourselves of preventable diseases like
heart disease, obesity and Type 2 Diabetes will stave off our being at risk for contagion.

Do we look at what we buy? As cheaper goods flooded our market from China, we were lured into overbuying of products that
may even be harmful. We became a throwaway society and had to catch ourselves and try and limit the harm it did to our country
and the environment. Products that we used to make here, and we would repair when broken, are now replaced. Those cheaper
goods in both quality and price do not stand the test of time and easily wind up in our landfills. Let’s make a conscious effort to
BUY AMERICAN. When making a purchase, make a conscious choice to read the label, it will surprise you. What we eat, what
we wear and what we use on an everyday basis is important.

Can we improve our health? Now more than ever, our immune system becomes a very important part of our overall health.
We need to protect it and improve it. One way to do that is getting good exercise and working towards better health. This can be
as simple as going for a walk, following social distancing protocols. At this time, stress is also tearing at many and as we return
to normal, we need to try and minimize it. Reaching out and asking for help can minimize stress.

Are we getting good information and acting on it? Information is coming at everyone at lightning speed and from many
sources. Try to limit your exposure to 24 hour news coverage. It can increase stress. We also need to be mindful of how constant
bombardment of this type of information can affect our children, who can easily be upset by hearing about things like disease
and death rates. Use common sense as a guide and act on it. Although the leaders of our nation, state and local governments are
doing their best, common sense solutions to complex problems work on a local level.

As always, The Somers Lions stand by to help the community, support the Town of Somers, support The Somers Record, and
help our neighbors. We could not do this without the support of our very generous sponsors and the Town of Somers. Please
remember to patronize small businesses, especially those who support us. We will continue to help in any way we can. For those
