most are crafted by hand from sustainable and renewable resources such as mulberry paper,

Green Burial Council Product Standards: All GBC approved caskets, urns and
shrouds must be constructed from plant-derived, recycled plant-derived, natural, animal,

What is a greener funeral?
A greener funeral, also known as a “natural funeral” or “eco-funeral,” is any end-of-life ritual
that is as harmless as possible to the environment.The essence of a greener funeral is a reduction in
environmental impact.
CREMATION – USING FEWER RESOURCES

For many years, cremation has been the most common alternative to
the traditional funeral.
Cremation uses far fewer resources than conventional burial, but it
does have an environmental impact. Families choosing cremation
can take additional steps to make the process more eco-friendly,
beginning with the use of shrouds or eco-friendly caskets.
Cremation also allows for the recycling of medical implants.
“Flameless Cremation” uses less energy and is considered by some to be a gentler, more eco-friendly
alternative to traditional flame-based cremation.The process, sometimes called Alkaline Hydrolysis,
occurs in a pressurized, stainless steel vessel filled with a heated alkaline solution.The alkalis, found
in common household products, act as the catalyst to accelerate the body’s natural decomposition.
Most cemeteries provide a variety of options for cremated remains, including interment in ground
spaces, columbaria (above-ground niches) or special gardens for the scattering of the remains.These
are also greener options, because they use less space.
NEW OPTIONS - A lighter FOOTPRINT
Cremated remains may be placed in urns made from materials that
break down naturally, or specially-designed and recyclable scattering
tubes that facilitate a clean and easy scattering. For those selecting
water burial there are salt, gelatin and other biodegradable urns
designed to float briefly, and then biodegrade within hours or days,
reducing the impact on aquatic life. By using an urn that can be
placed directly into the water, a more dignified memorial experience
can be achieved.

Our caskets and coffins are crafted by skilled
weavers from sustainable materials, such as
fast-growing willow, seagrass and bamboo.
Interior linings are made from unbleached,
natural cotton.

Passages® cremation containers are
suitable for viewing, services, and
witnessed cremation. They can be used
as part of a conventional or green funeral
ritual and are appropriate for traditions
requiring 100% biodegradability. They
contain no metal components, and no trees
are cut down to produce them. A Memorial
Tree certificate is included with every adult
casket or coffin. See page 3 for details. Ask

and 63 for details).

Passages® caskets and coffins are
Fair Trade, and we strive to operate
in compliance with the 10 standards

WATER

These urns biodegrade quickly and naturally
once placed into water, some in as little as
four hours. Many design, material and color
alternatives are available, allowing families
to choose from a wide range of options. Urns
are hand-crafted and may vary slightly in size
and appearance.

Urns are supplied with a biodegradable,
water-soluble bag into which the cremated
remains must be placed. All urns in this
section of the catalog are designed to float
briefly and sink intact. Float times will vary
by urn and amount of remains, as well as
local weather and water conditions. Local
regulations must be followed when placing
an urn at sea (no closer than three nautical
miles from shore).

If multiple family members or loved ones
wish to participate in scattering, or to create
their own small memorials, miniature or
keepsake-size urns allow for these options.

EARTH

The sustainably-crafted urns in this section
are suitable for scattering, burial or storage
of cremated remains. Choose from an
extensive assortment of handmade paper,
cornstarch, bamboo, or natural gourd urns.

Urns are supplied with a biodegradable
bag into which the cremated remains must
be placed. When buried in earth, they will
biodegrade naturally over time, depending
upon the material the urn is produced from
and the environment in which it is buried.

Most urns are available in multiple sizes,
styles and colors. Each item is hand-
crafted and may vary slightly in size and
appearance. Urns in this section are suitable
for temporary display followed by natural
burial or scattering.

If multiple family members or loved ones
wish to participate in scattering, or to create
their own small memorials, miniature or
keepsake-size urns allow for these options.

Each gourd is completely natural and unique. Crafted in the desert-southwest of the United States,
each is handmade by local artists. These works of art include a 25g cast bronze Memorial Pendant
that hangs from the ornamental drift-wood on top of each urn by a simple leather cord. Loads from
the top and securely closes with a 3-inch diameter cork. The bronze pendants and medallions
feature a “Tree of Life” symbol and can be engraved on the back. In addition, matching Memorial
Medallions are available and sold separately. Colors, sizes, shapes, and finishes of the gourds will
vary and are not guaranteed.
