Right: Bentayga feels at home off road in the wild countryside

There is a solitary white cottage on the shore of remote
Loch More. The sole survivor of a ruined fishing
hamlet, it stands silent vigil over the choppy waters –
the only building for miles around. Up here, on the
rocky outer reaches of northern Scotland, is about as remote as

it gets on mainland Britain, which is exactly why the Queen

Mother chose it as her permanent retreat.

Renting the cottage for “a shilling a month if asked” from

Lord Thurso (he never did ask), this was her sanctuary, a safe

haven to bring the royal children and grandchildren on picnics

when staying at the nearby Castle of Mey. Its sheer and utter

isolation was at once the prime attraction and the perfect

security provision.

Even today, the cottage is so challenging to reach that Lord

Thurso’s younger son jokes about selling the fishing rights to the

‘road’ as well as the loch. To be fair, there’s little difference

between the two. It’s a pleasant surprise, then,

Matthew Robertson, one of the UK’s leading

adventure travel operators. His company, Momentum Adventure,

prides itself on providing luxury bespoke holidays. His clients

now include Hollywood stars and – ironically for our current

location – royal families.

“The concept of adventure travel is evolving rapidly,” says

Matthew as he unties a large green Canadian canoe from

Bentayga’s roof. “People are starting to realise that nowhere

in any travel bible does it say you have to ‘suffer’ to enjoy

adventure. I’m a firm believer in that. Why can’t you have an

amazing, authentic adventure, but then also enjoy a nice bed at

night afterwards?”

Momentum’s brand of velvet-lined adventure has proved

quietly yet robustly successful – spreading like wildfire by word

of mouth among the ever-burgeoning cash-rich, time-poor

demographic on both sides of the Atlantic and beyond. (Gwyneth

Paltrow recently described a Momentum adventure to Indonesia

as “a dream trip” she would never forget.)

“I’d say 95% of the clients that come through our door are so

busy, so frazzled by a bottomless ‘nine to five’ routine that never

ends, that they don’t even know what they want to do,” continues

Matthew. “They just know that they want to get away and

experience something completely different.”

It’s a particularly apt analogy right now, as we stand next to

the streamlined Bentayga on the banks of the raw, aggressive

loch; black and yellow mountains looming on the horizon like

the spikes of a lizard’s back, bristling against the smoky clouds.

“It’s all about leaving your comfort zone,” says Matthew. “As

soon as you escape your routine, your synapses start popping

and suddenly everything seems new and you feel alive again.

Back at Inverness Airport, the Bentayga keys begrudgingly
returned, Matthew is in reflective mood. “Too many people
hear ‘adventure travel’ and think it’s going to be one of two
extremes – rambling or Red Bull,” he says. “But there’s an infinite
amount of ground between the two. People are capable of much
more than they think they are. It’s just about finding the right
balance between risk and reward. There’s a massive space
outside our comfort zones and we’re all starting to realise just
how big that space is. Often, taking the right journey in the right
way can completely recalibrate your perspective on the whole
world. The outdoors is food for the soul. Why shouldn’t you be
able to enjoy that feast in style?”

Perhaps momentum is something we all need a little more of
