A Note From Andrea & Scott
It
seems
like
every
article
I
have
read
the
last
few
months
on
children
has
been
about
their
increased
level
of
anxiety.
It
is
important
to
start
by
saying
i t
is
quite
a
normal
part
of
childhood
to
feel
anxious
from
time
to
time.
I t
is
also
key
to
share
that
we
feel
the
role
of
parents
and
those
organizations
as
parents
we
partner
with
have
a
very
i mportant
role
in
helping
children
work
t hrough
these
a nxieties.
However,
with
that
said,
it
is
scary
t o
know
that
anxiety
has
overtaken
depression
as
the
most
common
reason
college
students
seek
counseling.
In
1985,
1 6%
of
freshman
at
UCLA
felt
overwhelmed
to
the
point
of
needing
help.
In
2016
that
number
h ad
jumped
to
41%.
More
alarming
i s
the
statistic
that
nearly
one-‐third
of
both
adolescents
and
adults
are
afflicted
with
diagnosable
anxiety
disorder.
So
as
I
read
these
articles,
o ne
thought
kept
repeating
it’s
self
in
my
head.
We
all
need
to
slow
down.
At
home
we
have
to
slow
down
and
hear
o ur
c hildren
when
they
speak
t o
us.
We
have
to
help
change
t he
narrative
playing
in
the
head,
“YOU
A RE
NOT
ENOUGH”…You
are
not
smart
enough;
You
are
not
calm
enough;
You
are
not
pretty
enough;
you
are
not
fast
enough;
y ou
are
not
big
e nough;
Y ou
are
not
talented
enough…
In
the
age
of
digital,
we
have
to
work
extra
hard
to
help
children
learn
to
be
who
they
are
and
be
comfortable
enough
to
enjoy
their
life
without
comparing
it
to
their
peers
or
all
the
events
they
see
online.
They
are
bombarded
every
minute
of
the
day
with
someone
else’s
best
moment
of
the
day.
Pictures
and
video
filled
with
exotic
experiences.
They
t hen
compare
all
of
these
digital
“wow”
images
to
the
life
that
is
going
on
immediately
around
them.
The
result
is
a
constant
reinforcement
that
their
life
is
not
enough…You
can
read
more
on
this
in
an
article
in
The
Atlantic.
What
can
we
do?
As
parents
we
have
to
be
very
intentional
about
how
we
listen
and
respond
to
our
children
when
they
are
sharing
how
they
f eel.
I
know
many
times,
I
c atch
myself
giving
o ne
of
my
g irls
a
throw
away
response
when
they
have
just
floated
something
i ntended
to
get
my
attention
and
open
a
conversation
about
something
that
is
bothering
them.
It
can
happen
anytime
and
most
likely
will
be
different
for
every
child,
but
I
have
noticed
it
happens
often
when
we
are
in
the
car,
or
when
watching
T V.
Both
are
times
when
typically
I
used
to
not
be
on
guard
for
these
conversations.
During
these
calm
quiet
moments,
I
learned
quickly
that
denying
or
contradicting
a
concern
that
had
caused
the
anxious
feeling
just
resulted
in
higher
a nxiety
a nd
sometimes
an
angry
spiraling
o ut
of
control
negative
confrontation.
In
reading
the
books
and
all
the
articles,
I
have
picked
up
a
few
phrases
that
I
find
work
in
calming
down
an
anxious
child.
Some
are
obviously
better
with
younger
children
and
I
am
sure
you
have
some
of
your
own
already
and
if
not,
you
should.
“Tell
me
more
about
it”
Give
your
child
room
to
talk
about
their
feelings
or
fears
without
interrupting.
This
is
not
the
time
to
offer
solutions
it
is
really
about
allowing
them
to
process
their
thoughts
out
loud
without
being
told
they
are
wrong
or
being
silly.
However,
giving
some
structure
does
help.
“We
are
10
minutes
from
home,
can
you
share
with
me
what
is
bothering
you
by
the
time
we
get
home”?
“Can
you
think
of
a
different
ending?”
Many
times
the
issue
is
extrapolated
to
an
ending
t hat
leaves
children
feeling
like
they
are
without
a
way
out.
Help
them
see
different
options
by
playing
out
the
scenario,
but
leaving
off
the
ending.
Then
create
a
few
new
endings
with
them.
Some
can
be
silly,
but
at
least
one
should
be
realistic
for
your
child.
The
goal
is
to
focus
on
your
child
conquering
their
fear
with
confidence!
“WOW…I
a m
going
to
stop
and
take
a
deep
breath…I
am
going
to
slowly
b reath
in
through
my
n ose
and
exhale
through
my
mouth.
Do
me
a
favor,
do
that
with
me
twice
before
we
start
to
talk.”
Children
can
work
themselves
into
such
a
place
that
they
are
not
able
to
pick
a
calming
strategy.
By
doing
this,
we
make
ourselves
the
calming
skill!
Share
with
them
how
doing
this
makes
you
feel.
With
younger
children
you
can
hug
them
while
you
do
this
so
they
can
feel
the
rise
and
fall
of
your
chest.
“It’s
scary
AND…”
First
acknowledge
your
child’s
situation,
fear,
or
anxiety
without
making
it
more
frightening
by
the
use
of
the
word
“AND.”
After
the
word
‘and”
you
can
add
phrases
like,
“You
are
safe.”
Or
“You’ve
conquered
this
fear
before.”
Or
“You
have
a
plan.”
Or
“We
can
create
a
plan
together.”
This
gives
your
child
words
they
can
use
in
their
head
the
next
time
they
face
this
or
similar
issues.
“Can
you
draw
it?”
Many
younger
children
cannot
express
their
emotions
with
words.
Encourage
them
to
draw,
paint
or
create
their
concern
on
paper.
When
they
are
finished,
make
observations,
and
give
them
a
chance
to
explain
the
significance.
“Hey
that
is
a
lot
of
blue.”
“What
do
you
need
from
me?”
Instead
of
assuming
t hat
you
know
what
your
child
needs,
g ive
them
an
opportunity
t o
tell
you
what
would
help.
Older
kids
may
be
able
to
verbalize
if
they
need
you
to
listen,
give
a
hug,
or
help
them
find
a
solution.
If
you
can’t
do
it,
give
them
their
wish
in
fantasy:
“I
wish
grown-‐ups
could
go
to
3rd
grade
too!”
Not
every
one
of
these
strategies
will
work
for
your
kids.
YOU
are
the
expert
on
your
c hild.
If
you
try
something
and
it
makes
their
worry
worse,
d on’t
panic.
J ust
pick
something
else
from
your
list.
E ventually,
y ou
will
find
the
right
set
of
phrases
and
approaches
that
will
send
a
calm,
encouraging
and
empowering
message
to
your
child.
The
other
thing
we
can
do
as
parents
is
not
over
program
our
children.
Choose
programs
that
allow
them
to
just
slow
down
and
enjoy
being
in
the
moment,
being
a
child.
I
bet
you
can
guess
what
we
feel
is
the
best
way
to
achieve
this
goal…Yep,
allow
your
child
to
go
to
camp.
One
where
they
disconnect
from
the
digital
media
and
live
in
the
moment
with
who
is
directly
in
front
of
them.
Learning
that
the
anxiety
of
getting
on
stage,
batting
in
the
big
spot
during
an
inter-‐camp
game
or
trying
to
get
up
wake-‐surfing
are
all
things
they
can
overcome
and
master.
Habits
and
skills
that
will
help
translate
into
success
as
they
go
on
to
college!

2017 Project Morry
Swim and Walk -A-Thon
Project Morry is a year-round nonprofit organization that focuses on the development of inner-city youth. The
organization offers support through curriculum based programs which are implemented at school gatherings
and an intensive summer camp experience. These children benefit from this program in many ways, providing
them with a support group and resources that would not be available otherwise. Project Morry instills postive
core values, enhanced self-esteem, and a greater sense of personal responsibility. At Project Morry, children are
setting their own goals and working hard to achieve them.
Thank you to ALL of our camp families who have donated!
This year’s camper, parent, Scott and Andrea’s totals have

Claire’s Corner
The
20th
summer
at
Southwoods
has
come
and
gone
and
it
was
truly
a
magical
experience!
In
the
past
20
years,
Scott
and
Andrea
have
created
a
place
that
feels
like
home
to
so
many
and
taught
lessons
that
will
stick
Claire Dunlap
with
thousands
of
campers
and
staff
for
a
lifetime.
Here
are
a
few
of
the
lessons
I
have
learned
from
Southwoods
that
I
apply
to
my
daily
life. Trek Director
1. Choose
your
attitude!
We
have
the
power
to
control
our
attitude
and
decide
whether
we
are
going
to
make
the
day
great
for
ourselves
and
others!
2. Circle
Back!
This
technique
helps
to
ensure
everyone
is
on
the
same
page,
enabling
positive
and
professional
relationships
amongst
staff
and
campers!
3. Laugh
at
yourself!
Find
the
courage
to
get
on
the
stage
or
in
front
at
campfire,
and
give
it
all
you’ve
got,
even
if
it
is
outside
of
your
comfort
zone!
This
is
so
freeing
and
great
for
personal
growth!
4. You
never
know
when
you’re
creating
a
memory!
Whether
it
is
leading
an
extravagant
hike,
or
relaxing
and
making
friendship
bracelets,
giving
your
full
attention
and
time
to
campers
makes
all
the
difference!
These
are
just
a
few
of
the
MANY
lessons
I
have
learned
from
Southwoods.
I
hope
that
you
find
the
time
to
reflect
on
lessons
you
have
taken
away
from
camp
and
apply
them
to
your
lives!

the

WAY!
