A Note From Andrea & Scott

Hello Southwoods,
I am sure most if not all of our Southwoods families have heard about the Netflix mini series called “13 Reasons Why”. Below is an
excellent article by John Ackerman, PhD that was published April 13, 2017 in: Behavioral Health, Kids & Teens, Parenting and we felt it
was worth sharing with you so you could decide if you wanted your child viewing this series or reading the book.
Over the last 30 years we have continued to be witness to the fact that issues and pressures once only associated with adults have been
transferred to our young adults and children. This past fall and again in March, the Southwoods leadership met and agreed that we would
work to intentionally incorporate mindfulness into everything we do at Southwoods. Helping our campers and staff find the fun and
positives in each activity and interaction. To do that, our entire staff orientation is being built around the concept of Mindfulness. We have
also contracted with Dr. JW Wiley, a college professor and nationally known speaker, to come to our orientation and lead our entire staff in
learning, as it relates to managing diversity in all forms. Additionally, during pre-season we are bringing in trainers to lead our leadership
staff in an 8 hour certification course in Youth Mental Health First Aid.
All of this coupled with the Southwoods Way and our Fuzzy philosophy allow us to create amazing and positive unforgettable summers.
Thank you for trusting the most precious things in your life to us here at Southwoods.
Author: John Ackerman, PhD
The mini-series 13 Reasons Why (13RW), adapted from a young adult novel, was released on Netflix this past week. 13RW relays the
fictional story of a high schooler, Hannah Baker, who has died by suicide before the story even begins. Hannah chooses to leave behind
cassette recordings for the 13 people who she feels are responsible for her death.

Through these cassettes the audience learns that nearly everyone in Hannah’s life is complicit in her suicide. The reasons range from
bullying, starting rumors, sharing compromising social media images, shaming, failing to stand up for her, sexual assault, and not noticing
the warning signs of impending suicide.

The show’s release has led to much conversation and social media buzz about teen suicide, especially among middle and high-schoolers.
On the surface, this appears positive. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-34 year-olds. Although it can be
uncomfortable, having direct, genuine conversations with our kids about suicide is healthy and potentially life-saving.

The myth that these discussions cause someone to become suicidal has been debunked. We know that silence and stigma prevents those at
risk from reaching out for much needed support. Suicide is a major public health issue that deserves a thoughtful national dialogue.

Unfortunately, 13RW misses the mark in critical ways to better understand and address the devastating impact of teen suicide. Despite
being touted by some as a “life-saving” work, 13RW could do more harm than good by disregarding best practices in media portrayals of
suicide. Many individuals who have personal experience with suicide, as well as suicide prevention advocates, have serious concerns
about the way suicide is portrayed in 13RW.

Isn’t media attention on the topic of youth suicide a good thing?

Not necessarily. Mainstream media portrayals of suicide and mental health issues are often inaccurate and can reinforce stereotypes that
lead to increased stigma and discrimination toward those with mental health struggles.
Research suggests that youth are more susceptible than any other age-group to a phenomenon called “suicide contagion.” Suicide
contagion exists when there is an increase in suicides after being exposed to the suicidal behavior of others. Exposure to graphic,
sensationalized, highly detailed, or simplified portrayals of suicide can result in copycat suicide attempts and deaths by suicide,
particularly in teens and young adults.
In the last episode of the season, 13RW violates a central principle in media’s responsibility to the public regarding the prevention of
suicide contagion by showing Hannah ending her life in shockingly graphic detail. This is a show marketed toward young people. The vast
majority of adolescents won’t experience contagion, but what about those who are overwhelmed, feeling vulnerable, or struggle with
thoughts of suicide?
How each individual will respond is hard to predict, but we know that ignoring media guidelines on suicide can contribute to more
suicides. It is worth noting that Hannah’s method of suicide was not included in the book, and it is a potentially dangerous decision by
writers and producers to depict it in such a drawn out, and detailed, fashion.
All of us as parents have to evaluate our children’s maturity and consider whether they are ready for a series as intense as 13RW. If you
decide to allow your child to watch the series, we encourage you to have open conversations with them, discussing their reactions to the
show and hearing the messages they have taken from it. Even better, view it with them so you can watch their reactions.

Love,
Andrea & Scott

Line Up! Girls Side!

Camp is just around the corner and we could not be more excited! Before we get ready to pack our bags and
get on the bus, I wanted to remind you about our mission and what that means for your summer!

“Southwoods is committed to empowering people. Our goal is to build confidence and self-esteem by
reinforcing positive human values. We achieve that goal through cutting-edge programming implemented
by a carefully selected and fully trained staff whose investment in children, like our own, is unparalleled.”

We’ve been hard at work hiring fully trained staff and planning some awesome programming, so let’s
consider the first part: “Southwoods is committed to empowering people.” We want every camper that steps
foot onto the Southwoods property to feel like they can accomplish any and every thing they choose this
summer!
You might be wondering, “where do I come in?” Well, this is when you to take some time to think about Lauren
what YOU are going to commit to this summer! You’ve already committed to being at camp--and we can’t Hohman

wait to see you--but while you’re there, what is something you want to happen? Maybe your goal is to make Girls Side
a new friend or learn the words to every camp song! Consider engaging in an activity like being in the camp
play or successfully wakesurfing! Or start small and challenge yourself to do one new thing… This could be Head Counselor

a new activity or even try a new food!

At Southwoods, we’ve committed to helping you feel comfortable being yourself and empowering you to
step out of your comfort zone. So take a moment, maybe even take out a pen and paper, and write down
what you’re committing to while at camp this summer. We’re so excited to support and encourage you so
that you have the most amazing summer of your life!

Line up! Boys Side!

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to join a few of our LIT’s (Emma, Laura, Sammy, Ben, Nicholas,
Zach, Heather, Caleigh, Gabe, and Harrison) at the annual ACA LEAD Conference in Manhattan. A
great experience had by all! As I watched our Southwoods young leaders navigate around to various
professional development sessions, I couldn’t have been more proud!

It was evident that the Southwoods values are with us all year round. Our LIT’s were respectful, caring,
intuitive and intentional as they absorbed the information presented, knowing it was going to be relevant
in helping our campers be successful this summer. It was apparent Southwoods has great kids. With over
57 years of Southwoods experience in attendance, we were very well represented. Way to go
Johnny Reinke Southwoods LIT’s!

Boys Side Also, I would like to give a big “Southwoods Shout Out” to Scott, who opened the conference, and

Head Counselor Lauren, who was a speaker! What an AMAZING opportunity it is to learn from these two each and
every day!

I can’t wait to see you soon for the BEST SUMMER EVER!!! Until Next Time, Keep Dreaming Big!!!

Claire’s Corner

It seems like just yesterday we were celebrating the end to a successful 2016 summer and now
we are filling up with the excitement of a new beginning for summer 2017.

Life is full of new beginnings. Whether it’s going to a new school, turning a year older, going
to camp for the first time, or returning for another great summer. New beginnings mean new
opportunities and at camp the opportunities to have the best summer of your life are endless.

Southwoods creates opportunities for you to make new friends, try new things, and expand Claire Dunlap
your comfort zones. One of my favorite professors used to say “If the job is worth doing, do it Trek Director
right,” so make it your job this summer to come with your best foot forward and say YES to
these wonderful opportunities- this is a job worth doing and when you do it right, you’ll see
the magic unfold at Southwoods! See you soon for a great new beginning to summer 2017!!!
