Greetings to the new look
‘Village Voice’. For quite a
long time the printing of the
magazine has been a great
burden on a few and dwindling
number of faithful people. My
thanks go to all the wonderful
long standing team including
Anne van Vliet, Graham Taylor
and Ann Mackie as well as the many others, including distributors,
who were responsible for the magazine. To relieve the burden on
some of these members, the PCC decided to out-source the printing
and collating of the magazine with this being the first copy. As you
can see, the reproduction quality has improved but, in addition, it is
hoped that we will now be able to offer a better and more versatile
magazine. Please let us know your thoughts and suggestions.

One improvement will be the addition of better photographs. The
one above was taken last July when Bishop Jonathan joined us for
the special Flower Festival and the anniversary of the consecration of
St John’s. The Flower Festival committee is already well ahead with
its planning for this year’s event over the Carnival weekend of the
8th & 9th of July. More of that nearer the time. Certainly with our
relatively mild and dry beginning to the year, the spring flowers have
looked wonderful this year. As I write, the bluebells are breaking in
large numbers. The Church certainly looked wonderful when decked
out florally for Easter Sunday.

At the 8:00 am Service on Easter morning I reflected in part on the
assertion of the Atheist Richard Dawkins that ‘a religious approach
to life misses out on something’1 He unfortunately never makes
clear what this something may be. However as we seriously
consider the first eye-witness accounts of Jesus’ resurrection it is
clear that the people present had to change and develop their own

Page 1

thinking and beliefs as the events of the day forced their way into their
experience. It was not that they went out looking for a resurrected
Jesus – in fact quite the reverse – but events overtook them when they
met with him. The more I study Science, the more I wonder at the
intricacies of the world around us but like those first followers of
Jesus, my world is not limited by mere mechanisms, as many
questions can never be answered by Science alone. If Jesus is
resurrected then great new possibilities are available to consider. We
would be fools to close the door to these possibilities.

The League of Friends of St. John's Church

The League of Friends of St. John’s Church, Dormansland held their
Spring Concert on 19th March to a full church and it was a tremendous
success. The Slinfold Concert Band did us proud and forty-two
musicians produced the most amazing music from stage, film and TV.
At the end of the concert some of the audience stood to clap – they
appreciated it so much. Refreshments were also served. The money
raised goes towards the maintenance of the church.

Dormansland Short Mat Bowls Club

Following my article in the Village Voice last year, we were delighted
to welcome several new members, so thank you dear readers.
However, with clubs whose membership covers most of the decades
after the 5th one, we win some and loose some !!!!, so once again I
invite you lovely readers to either spread the word or come and join us
yourselves.

Why not try us out (first few sessions free) if you have never played
before, or if you fancy a change from the pressures of more
competitive clubs, come along for a relaxed roll up in a friendly
atmosphere.

One session a week, WEDNESDAYS 10:00 am to Midday, free
refreshments and easy parking where we meet at the Memorial Hall, at
Dormansland crossroads in the village.

Look forward to hearing from you

Dormans Evening WI

www.dewi.btck.co.uk

With so many events to keep us occupied in the present, DEWI
members might be excused for not thinking too much about being
“Legally Prepared” for the future! Ann Orr’s talk on the subject was
packed full of interesting, helpful and beneficial advice on all things
connected with Wills, Powers of Attorney and much more besides.
Lots of questions followed which Ann was happy to answer. Even
those of us who thought we were well prepared, went home with things
to think about.

We’re calling on all our green-fingered members to get planting for our
Plant Sale on 27th May. Other events coming up include a Race Night,
Skittles, a garden visit, and the theatre - including Hever where we
combine the theatre visit with a picnic which is always great fun.
We’re even looking at events for 2018 – who says we’re not a forward
thinking organisation! We are so lucky to belong to such an active and
entertaining WI!

The plans look fantastic. We are not changing the feel of the pub, just

The Probus Club of
Dormansland and District

At our April meeting, the Club was entertained
by our speaker, Neil Hunt, a Fellow and Past
President of the National Association of
Toastmasters, and a member of the City of London Beadles Guild.
Neal, resplendent in his Red Tails and dark trousers, explained the
significance of his dress and that of his other Black Tails and colourful
sash used for City of London events.

He explained what he had to do preparing for an event, procedures and
how he would announce various guests and the order it is done in. A
fascinating talk intermingled with humorous anecdotes.

Our next meeting on 11th May is a talk on Wildlife Photography.

Probus meets on the second Thursday of each month. If you are a

This year Dormansland Primary School are adopting a traditional
themed fair, with something for all the family.

be missed.

In addition we have performances from local community groups, a
variety of stall sellers, real life rescue animals from the nearby
Wildlife A&E, and all the fun and games of the fair, with pocket
money stalls, Beat the goalie, pony rides and wet sponge target
practice on the teachers. Try your hand at the coconut shy, the
skittle alley, and then enjoy the range of refreshments available,
while little ones relish chill-out time on the ride-on trikes.

Come rain or shining sun, there's something for everyone. So make
sure you save the date 20th May 1:00 – 4:00 pm..... be there, or

Christian Aid Week
14-20 May

I am so grateful for the help of our 30 volunteers in Dormansland who
give their time to distribute and collect the by-now familiar red
Christian Aid envelopes, which will be posted through every letterbox
in the village and Dormans Park.

Money raised is used to effect long-term positive change. For every
pound raised, 86p goes directly to help people in need. Another 13p
goes back into fundraising, so we can raise the next pound. The last
penny pays for the charity’s overheads.

Dormansland residents last year gave a total of £2,258.13. I am
hoping that those who kindly gave their time last year to act as
volunteer collectors will be willing to help again this year. There are a
number of roads that still need covering. If you would like to help in
this wonderful work, please get in touch on 01342 312215 or via email
at [email protected].

Thank you.

Thank you from Sullivan’s Heroes

Thank you so much to everyone who supported Sullivan’s Heroes,
raising funds for disabled children’s home adaptations, through
Waitrose’s Community Matters programme for March.

The green coins in each of the three boxes have now been counted and
funds from the £1,000 available in each store have been shared,
according to the number of coins, across the three projects featured.

We’re delighted to report that March’s programme supporting
Sullivan’s Heroes in three Waitrose branches raised an overwhelming
£590 in East Grinstead, £336 in Burgess Hill and £265 in Horsham.
Thank you to all those who helped us – this will make a positive
difference to many disabled children’s lives.

Dormansland Primary School

As we prepare to start our Summer Term, our focus over Easter has
been on the installation of our new school garden.

We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of two local companies;
B J Babb Builders and Steve Edwards of SJE Gardens & Grounds,
who have done the groundwork between them, and donated and
installed many of the materials. We also thank the parents, staff and
community members for helping us to get this project off the ground.

We now have six good sized raised beds to plant, along with space for
some potato sacks, a herb and sensory garden, butterfly garden and
composting area, as well as three beds for trailing vegetable plants.

We are also looking forward to working with Joseph Mouland, who
recently created the natural fencing near Claridge Close and will
shortly be helping us to transform a rather tired willow structure in our
garden, that is in need of some TLC.

We will be having an open day later in the year to show the garden,
but in the meantime, if anyone has anything they would like to donate,
plant or otherwise, please could you contact us via the school office.

Our Year 1 teacher Miss May is running an Eco/Garden Club every
Wednesday afternoon and is always delighted to welcome new
helpers. Could you spare an hour, to show or share your gardening
knowledge with the children? We would love to hear from you.

Lingfield Notre Dame School

celebrates an excellent inspection report.

The Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) has published its report on
Lingfield Notre Dame School following an inspection that took place
in January 2017. The ISI awarded the Senior School, Junior School
and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) ‘Excellent’ in each
category.

Mr Richard Bool, Headmaster, said: “I am delighted that the hard
work of all pupils, parents, teachers, governors and the wider
community has been acknowledged in this glowing report for our
school. While our academic achievements in both the Junior and
Senior Schools are excellent, I am particularly proud of the references
made by the inspectors to the high quality of the pastoral care that we
offer our pupils.”

The key findings highlight the high standards achieved by Lingfield
students across all areas of learning, and the report adds that
exceptional levels of attainment are achieved by the most able pupils.
The inspectors also commented on the school’s relaxed but disciplined
learning environment, and its wide range of extra-curricular
opportunities. The students’ personal development was pointed out as
a particular strength of the school, and the inspectors noted,
“Throughout the school the pupils develop into well-rounded,
charming and confident young people who show a caring attitude for
others and promote a friendly and welcoming school community.”

From Easter, the school will be changing its name to Lingfield College
and Lingfield College Prep to reflect its development into a large, non-
denominational school that is fully co-educational.

FROM THE EDITOR

Summer is on it’s way – hurray! Dormansland is such a glorious
place to live, especially in May. Do you have a lovely seasonal photo
of a local scene you would like to share with the village by having it
on the front cover of our new-look magazine? As we work in advance
to get each publication out, you may find you have a photo from
eleven months ago that would fit in beautifully in a month’s time!
Please contact me if you have something suitable. If the photo was
taken by someone else, please ensure you have their permission.
